    u know spanish is an European language, right? created and spoken by white ppl. spanish isn't even the official language in Mexico, since it was forced on em by colonization. if u really think about it, its weirder to see non-whites speak a white language like spanish than a white guy who speak the European language-spanish.

    omg. I have almost 2 years of learning Spanish now and understand you completely. speaking Spanish to someone with Latin origin but grew up in the states and speaks perfect English is so intimidating. I would say speaking Spanish with another American present who has already reached fluency is up there as well, but speaking to someone fluent in both languages is super nerve racking.

Quizás para ellos la situación también es un poco raro, pero con tiempo y poco a poco se va a normalizar la comunicación entre tú y las personas con quién tienes contacto regularmente. Para ti son muy importante ejercicios. Espero que tienes un día excelente. 😉

    Talking about the order of of yuca. You said platido which means side order but only in English. She didn't said platito or side dish. She used the word. Una orden de yuca "Frita" thats only served with chicharron. Nicaragua have the same with pollo. Delicious. So you asked for a side orderthe waitress dint offer a side dish but a dish of yuca con chicharron.

    I try to think of it in a prolific sense. How would I react to someone who is trying to casually speak to me in my own language? I would be patient with them and proud of them for trying. So when I went to a shoe store (at the Island in Pigeon Forge Tennessee), the cashier only knew the neccessary words to make a transaction. I saw that she was struggling, so I switched to Spanish. Her eyes got as big as bubble gum drops and her smile was delightfully infectious. She couldn't believe it when she heard my accent. She asked if one or both of my parents were Latino because I used words from multiple dialects. I told her I have friends from around the world that have taught me words and phrases, so that's understandable. She called her coworkers over to hear me speak. I explained that I was 100% gringo, and I was the only person in my family that speaks Spanish. I would NOT have used Spanish if she was engaging with me in English. I would have feared that she might think that I was insulting her English by swapping. So just use common sense and try to read each situation as it presents itself. You'll find that most people are quick to accommodate your efforts. But be careful NOT to use too much slang with people who are of a different dialect than the dialect you are studying. It can get ugly really fast if you aren't friends with them. The ONLY time I get offended by foreigners speaking English is when I'm trying to do business over the phone. For example, I had to speak to my health insurance provider for a claim that wasn't covered. I couldn't understand more than 20% of what they said. When it comes to thousands of dollars, I want to know what negotiations are actually being conversed. It doesn't have to be with someone of my own country, but I at least need to know that I'm understood without any doubt. But for informal conversations like a waitress or a person on the bus, by all means, go ahead and take a chance. I have found that most of them are very friendly and love to chat with Americans. So they were usually very accommodating to me when I first started learning Spanish. They were here on a work visa for a few months, and I had the privilege of being their transportation. We traded Spanish for English, and learned that was a fun way to learn quickly. Lastly, engulfing yourself with the music of the dialect you want to learn and movies from that country will give you the best pronunciation (turn on english captions and keep using the rewind button on your remote when you don't understand the context) .... Thats how I learned to speak with minimal accent. You're doing great. Keep climbing just like the rest of us. We never stop learning! Happy Spanish! 🎉

    I am also bilingual in Spanish and very white. Uno de mis chistes favoritos es cuando alguien me dice “Hables muy bien en Español” inmediatamente digo yo “Tu también hablas muy bien en Español”! Basically the joke is that the Hispanic person is complimenting you, so when you respond with the deadpan answer of “So do you” it surprises them cause you are acting like its the most natural things to speak the language. Try it!

    ¡Oye, todos! Soy bahameña (de la isla se llama Grand Bahama) y solo quería compartir mis pensamientos. Almost all Bahamians learn Spanish in school from a very young age (like 5 yrs old), but because the living language is English, words start to get lost over time. You would have much better luck approaching teens to 20 yr olds (but it's not gonna be perfect). Spanish is actually on everything in the Bahamas from signs to the product labels in all of our stores. That is because we have close governmental affiliations with Spain. They are considered our sister country and they are our main exporters. Spain is also invested in The Bahamas' ability to speak Spanish for easier communication between us, which is why we are taught the language.Tengo 27 años. Mis hermanos y yo hablamos español suficientemente bien. 😅 Solo nunca lo usamos. Mi español no es perfecto, como estoy segura que puedes ver, pero yo puedo entender mucho. I hope this helped clear things up a bit. 😄 And nice video btw! Really cool, really entertaining.

    I sometimes unknowingly mix up Mexican Spanish and Castilian Spanish. I have some coworkers and distant friends who are Mexicans but a lot of the shows and movies I’m exposed to are Castilian Spanish. I know it’s not exactly ideal to do that but because I’m not necessarily full aware of the differences save for the seseo stuff, this is why I sometimes can get mixed up between the two. The reason why I’m learning Spanish however is because there is an effort going on in the Philippines (my parents and wife’s home country) where they are slowly reintroducing and reintegrating Spanish back into official level. It’ll take a long while to make it happen but it’s expected to happen within the next decade or so. And I personally want to contribute to that effort. Edit: I think it’s especially beneficial for Filipinos to learn how to speak Spanish. While I don’t deny English is one of the most important languages in the world these days, Spanish comes very close especially for those Filipinos who want to flock to the U.S. It is rather ironic that the Philippines has been straying away from the Spanish language while the U.S. has been always promoting Spanish due to the influx of Latinos flocking to the country for the same reason Filipinos do.

Any good podcasts or music in particular? At what point do you recommend watching tv and movies in Spanish and do you recommend any tv channels? Thanks!

    • @ElGringoSam
      @ElGringoSam Год назад

      Hey E, so yeah for the initial 3 years that took me to conversationally fluent I was working full time. I would spend about an hour a day on various resources. At that time I was working in a restaurant as a server / bartender but I had ample opportunity to speak with some of the Spanish speakers that worked in the kitchen area. While you're at the gym Language Transfer is great (and free!). Each audio episode only takes about 12 minutes on average. For music I like to thrown on a modern pop / hiphop Spanish channel on Pandora or Spotify. As I workout I am introduced to new songs and if I really like on Ill jot it down in my notes to review the lyrics later. Movies can be difficult as a beginner because it'll be 90-120 minutes of being lost. I recommend finding a show and either starting with show (there are lots to choose from on Netflix) so its a more bite sized experience. The goal is to get to Spanish subtitles but don't beat yourself up if you can't follow along at first, Enlgish subtitles are fine as long as you make an effort to pay attention to what the characters are saying. Keep it up!
