    I don't support a definition of "politics" to include nearly everything about society. "Politics" since Plato and Aristotle has been centered on the governance of specified social entities ("polities"). Laws and law enforcement. Public vs private control of resources. Institutions of decision-making, action (declaring war), and institutions of justice. How about we use terms like "culture", "society", "institutions", "values", "morals", "ethics", "identity" to describe all the aspects of society that extend beyond politics? Does politics belong in fiction? Yes, at the discretion of authors and readers. Just depends on the focus, scope, plots, motivations, and consequences.

    Not sure if most people who are reporting on the line management of the Deadpool Wolverine panel are even aware that the lottery for that event seemed to have been managed by Disney/Marvel Studios and not by Comic-Con International themselves. So I feel like there may have been some miscommunication between the two organizations. CCI has its own lottery system in place for things like exclusives from different companies, autographs, and at times screenings. The online entry form for the Deadpool Wolverine panel opened on July 15th; three days prior to the deadline for the official CCI lottery on July 18th. I'm thinking that it was a situation of too many cooks.

    What a great discussion! I'd like to throw my own two cents into the void. I believe that writing is very much akin to creating art but in the written word. And because art is limitless and subjective, it is truly up to the artist and those it touches to interpret. Your writing could be full of nuanced meaning, political reproach, cautionary wisdom...or it could be just for fun and for escapism. There are no limits to what you can choose to talk about and there shouldnt be any. But this a two sided coin, and Molly highlighted an important aspect where it is important be wary of the ramifications of your message. Despite the ability to create, you must also consider the consequences of your words and the affect they can have on people. To be known is to be subject to criticism. Not everyone is going to like what you have to say and it is impossible to please everyone. So knowing this, be creative. Make art. Just know that you also have to stand by your art and bear responsibility for its influence.

    This should be up to the author, not someone gaslighting them into their personal ideas of morality. "It is your obligation to..." is already coming from the position of being anti-art, anti-freedom. *As a consumer:* If I picked up a book, watched a TV show, or played a video game and saw real-life identity politics injected into it, I would stop consuming that content and never buy anything from that person or developer again. Escapism exists for a reason. However, I would never tell them to stop self-inserting themselves in their work. I just stop being a customer and move on to something better. And I know most consumers agree with me, as seen in all the flops littered with identity politics and activism in the entertainment industry where money talks. Otherwise, fictional politics in a fictional world, I feel, is okay in a fictional book if it actually serves as the plot driver and moves it along. Once those fictional politics start to look like real-world activism for "the message," then I'm out. *As a writer:* I don't care about making myself or my feelings the story. Therefore, my writing is always going to be agnostic. Some characters may feel a particular way about certain things, but it doesn't come from me personally. But most importantly, any character I write in my fictional books won't smear their personal ideology all over the place, if at all. I will stick with escapism, not because I am afraid of offending people with my personal politics-after all, I love offending people for the LOLs-but because self-injection into a work of art is boring, mundane, and cliche. *I want to create exciting, escapist Fantasy, not a Manifesto.*

      You make valuable points and your perspective is certainly valid. Thank you for sharing it. However, as you stated, this is your personal perspective, and I think I am almost totally in disagreement with your position when thinking about my own feelings towards writing. I personally don't like Escapism. I want to deal with the politics/modern world in the content I'm consuming. In this way, if I feel a work is lacking in any sort of personal ethics or is there just to be fiction without a message behind it, I will immediately stop reading/watching it. My favorite works of fiction all have a political message embedded in them: 1984, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, even the Catcher in the Rye.

      @@andrewreillymusic2773 Based on the performance of *fiction* in various industries-as mentioned in my OP-people like you are in the minority here. There's a reason why Star Wars, for example, is flopping. Its current caretakers also think they are *obligated* to push "the message," inserting their personal identity politics and beliefs, making Star Wars unwatchable. And the non-Disney SW fans agree as each new series flops harder than the previous. In A Galaxy Far, Far Away, Star Wars used to be the epitome of escapism, even with its *fictional* politics (which helped drive the plot by creating division and tension). The mere idea that you think people should be *obligated* to write their story the way you want them to, if they want you to read it, comes from the position of authoritarianism. I would have expected someone to have learned about the horrors of authoritarianism from 1984 and avoid repeating it in 2024. It seems like you're looking for *Non-Fiction,* which, at this point, 1984 could be reclassified. No person should ever be obligated to tell *their story* the way someone else wants it told.

    • @theresahalvorsen3703
      @theresahalvorsen3703 3 месяца назад

      @@grimmdanny Agreed that no person should ever be obligated to tell their story the way someone else wants it told. But I would challenge you that there was no political message in the original Star Wars. A princess, saved the two heroes. Now that can be seen as escapism and amusing, but could some see that as a political statement as well? Or is it simply an echo of what was going on in society?

I was holding off on watching Season 3 of Bridgerton for over a month now, but he finally bugged me enough to watch it lol. I was trying to avoid the distraction while I wrote because I KNEW I'd have to binge it lol. My husband's favorite characters in Bridgerton are Penelope and Lady Danbury. In Downton Abbey he loves the Dowager Countess and in Pride and Prejudice his favorite was Mr. Bennet (followed closely by Darcy). Author here! I want to start out by saying thank you for your critiques and the compliments regarding this piece. To answer your question about when the story is set, it’s a blend between medieval and industrial. It takes place in a tower city, where the royal families and those with some semblance of wealth or status live. There’s the typical political intrigue one would find in any modern dark-fantasy with a splash of the class divide that we saw in the industrial age. We watch two lovers navigate this world in a “Romeo & Juliet” type story arc. Thank you for the critiques I wish I could have submitted a larger sample. I would say this is more akin to an abridged version than the original. This is a prologue. Thwayne is a lot younger here than he is in the rest of the story. That’s where I describe him in greater detail. I feel like pausing to describe his looks during the opening would have slowed down the pacing a tad too much. I wish I could have submitted more to round out the piece. I’m always eager to share more of my stories.

    Hi, this is the author. Thank you for all your great suggestions. I am about 3/4 done with writing my memoir. I am still unsure what publishing path I will take. Here is a synopsis I am working on that will answer some of your questions: I Got Here By Accident is a coming of age memoir about Christy who has cerebral palsy. Born in 1966, she was mainstreamed before it was in vogue and bullied when it was still acceptable. Even though her case was considered mild, her disability affected her fine and gross motor skills as well as her speech, presenting challenges in every realm. Born into an adventurous but complicated family, Christy navigates life with an alcoholic father, an emotionally reserved mother an overachieving sister. Never coddled and always challenged, Christy faces her sensitivity, debilitating anxiety, and her longing to fit in and be accepted. The story will take you on a journey of ups and downs, including moments of incredible joy and devastating experiences. Like all of our lives, nothing is ever black and white and Christy’s memoir shows us that each of us is unique, and sometimes we are born not to fit in. As far as the birth story goes, it was the way it was told to me. I am sure they would have just done a c-section these days,

      And the boulders part add an interesting question about the narrator! Are they a reliable one, or prone to exaggeration, since it's not possible to put boulders in pockets.

    Hey, this is the author of this work. Thank you so much for your kind words and feedback! I had reservations starting it with a dream because of all the warnings against it, but I felt it important to start it this way, so I tried my best to turn the warnings on their head. One of the main plot points of Omniscient is Kalpana-a world that exists beyond dreams. Because of her nightmares, Maya breaks through the hallucinations(dreams) that hide the world and becomes “omniscient.” Then there is the government that’s still recovering from a war, bringing about a program that has to do with Kalpana, and Maya is more involved than she could ever have imagined. That clarity point is really helpful! I just finished writing the entire novel and am having beta readers read it. One of them brought up the same point of not knowing what woke up Maya, so I put “Wake up” right after she discovers it is just a dream. As for the other advice, I will definitely implement them! Thank you again!

      Additionally, if the story is about dreams, then perhaps opening the story with a dream is even more applicable. Let us know when it gets published, if that's your goal with it!

      For sure! After I have it as clean as it can be, I’m going to be querying agents to see if I can get it traditionally published, but if not then I will be self-publishing:)
