When Highway Operators Get It Wrong: The Life-Threatening Reality of Smart Motorway Signs
In this video, we dive deep into the hidden dangers of smart motorways and expose how highway operators' mistakes with gantry signage are putting lives at risk. As an HGV driver, I share my firsthand experiences of driving on smart motorways, where incorrect or delayed sign updates can turn a routine journey into a deadly gamble.
We’ll examine real-life incidents where faulty signage has led to catastrophic accidents, explore the role of manual operations and human error, and highlight the terrifying reality faced by both HGV drivers and car occupants. With lives hanging in the balance, it's time to uncover the truth about how smart motorways are managed and the urgent need for change.

PTFE is the prime component of Teflon, which is a friction reducer. The coating is not an attempt to seal the belt but simple a method of reducing friction losses as the teeth of the belt mesh with and unmesh with the teeth on the cam and crankshaft sprockets. An added benefit of the Teflon coating is that the oil will shed faster than from plain rubber. I never thought I'd watch so many YT videos on this problem but then I broke down 2 weeks ago with my Puretech 1.2 155 with only 22,000 miles on the clock. The fault code P11A9 concerns the inlet cam dephaser and is likely a blockage in the oil feed valve. The car is currently sitting in the dealership awaiting warranty repairs. According to the dealership service advisor - an ex-technician, They have a set procedure for this fault and it's a lengthy one, including oil drain, sump off and thoroughly clean it and the pick-up strainer, flush the oilways, inspect the vacuum pump for oil contamination damage (it's not unknown for them to break up completely inside!), change the wet belt and oil filter, change various seals and finally refill with fresh oil. The problem is getting the parts - it can take up to two weeks, presumably because of the high demand. In fact, the advisor told me that there is a hold up at the moment with dealerships having to form an orderly queue at the counter, so to speak!

@@NerdInMotion23 I've got my car back. It turned out to be the inlet cam dephaser solenoid valve had stuck in the fully retarded position. Unfortunately, the extended warranty company wouldn't issue the final approval until the Citroen technician had tested it the way they wanted! It seems that, just as in the USA where an insurance company decides on the type and level of healthcare you get, so too in the UK with extended warranties! In any case, by the time warranty company issued the approval to go ahead, the job was already complete, the car was road-tested and waiting for collection. It seems that the dealership spent all day yesterday just getting them to admit the repair was covered and that included a 45 minute hold! The service department were not best pleased at the way they'd been treated. The examined the belt at 6 different points with a borescope, allowing for difficulty of access - a bit like a colonoscopy I suppose! Anyway they pronounced it to be fully fit and in great shape. The car runs better than it did before the breakdown so perhaps it had been getting progressively and unnoticeably worse until it finally stuck! Result: Full marks to the dealership and only 5/10 for the warranty company for the unnecessary delays. I can't give them null points because at least they approved it. The thing is that the component is fully covered in the warranty - I checked so I can only assume that everyone in the building has to sign off on the approval!

You haven’t got a clue what you’re talking about. I work on the motorways, I work In traffic management and I drive the truck with the cones on, the whole point on the refuse area is if your broken down or for an emergency. If you can’t get out the refuse area you call national highways and they will put a big fat red x on the hard shoulder and most probably call the police or the wombles to assist. The reason people get hurt or die on smart motorways isn’t because of the way it functions it’s simply because people do not read the gantry’s. I’ve seen it, I see it first hand everyday. And you so called✌🏻professional truck drivers ✌🏻are the worst for it. As I said I drive the truck with the cones on, with the big flashing arrow that goes up 5m above the truck that tells you to move over to the next lane, the big cushion that folds down to take the impact of a vehicle hitting us, do you know what vehicles is mostly involved with crashing into the back of the trucks? @@NerdInMotion23 The recent ERA LDR policy change was driven by misuse of the ERA red X exit system by independent recovery operators. These operators would intentionally trigger a Red X exit and spend an hour handling breakdowns, distracting CCTV operators from other duties and unnecessarily closing lane 1 for extended periods. It’s worth considering who is responsible for this change and who has a history of using rage-baiting tactics for views. It’s important to recognize that if a vehicle can’t reach lane 1, it certainly can’t reach the hard shoulder. Annually, the hard shoulder accounts for around 26 fatalities and approximately 100 serious injuries (KSI). In fact, in a single year, four times more people die on the hard shoulder than have died from stationary vehicle incidents in lane 1 of smart motorways since 2006. Conventional motorways still experience more live lane stopped vehicle fatalities than smart motorways, and notably, no one has ever died under red X protection or inside an ERA. Replacing lane 1 of an All Lane Running (ALR) motorway with a hard shoulder removes the capacity for 3,500 cars per hour, pushing them onto A and B roads, which have 2 to 8 times higher fatality rates-resulting in 25 additional deaths annually. Many commentators who engage in social rage-baiting don’t know how many people die on each type of motorway or the circumstances surrounding those deaths. Most cannot even correctly identify different road types. This information is publicly available-please take the time to look it up. The hard shoulder solutions proposed to address issues, while seemingly logical, are often uninformed. Like many complaints about smart motorways, they lack a fundamental understanding of the data and facts. Depending on the year about 6 recovery operators die on hard shoulders per year. There was a year when 1 independent recovery operator died per month consecutively for 6 months. No recovery operator has ever died working on a smart motorway, largely thanks to the systems installed and the policies developed. Policies cowboy recovery operators can evidently be seen to ignore. On their own RUclips channel. Nevertheless, smart motorway systems still continue to protect even them. While one may portray himself a champion for the idiot motorist on camera, off camera he is recorded to be abusive. By reacting to these rage-baiting narratives, whether intentionally or not, you risk supporting misguided efforts. Every pound wasted on these uninformed campaigns is money that could have been used to prevent road fatalities. In the past, such rage-baiting tactics have led to over a billion pounds being wasted by a Tory government. Personally, I do not believe quick and dirty RUclips views are worth lives. There are certainly better ways to increase subscriber counts.

I sold my car through Motorway and having been offered £1700 for my car by a main dealer eight months later I sold it through Motorway for £3550. The procedure was absolutely painless and efficient and I would certainly use them again.

Back in the day when people had brains, tyres didn’t come loose! If they are torqued 100% they don’t come off and when you need to get them off for a puncture it’s not impossible to get it off. How do you know an indicator hasn’t done a complete turn when you check them? By the way,if you were to take things seriously I would rather non Chinese shite then indicators

@@mungogerryjnr they're torqued up weekly but it's the constant of hot wheels going into freezing cold wheel washes that causes them to come loose. I'm not sure what you mean by Chinese the truck is German 😂.

@@NerdInMotion23 it’s 52c outside in Australia and god knows what on the road. Why would you torque them weekly? The tyres, not the truck been Chinese. So how do you know if it’s coming loose and done a complete turn and ended up looking like it hasn’t moved? Since you have put that indicator on you now can’t read the thread and know if it’s coming loose!

@@mungogerryjnr so the trucks only do small trips and are visually checked each time. With the indicators you can actually touch them with a glove on as they insulate the heat so you can tell if they've turned. Also quite often you hear a rattle if it's going.
