Brave New Slop

Let's be honest about art. Criticism breeds quality.
The Bravest Heroes Have the Biggest Hearts
Do the greatest heroes have the biggest hearts? Can roguish courage and gentle, fatherly kindness coexist in one man? Why does Robin Hood still feel so special?
I fought a long and weary battle against Disney's copyright enforcement. Many battles actually. I managed to produce this very dense little video. Hope you enjoy!

Juror #2: The Worst Written Movie of 2024?

Juror #2 was rumored to be as Oscar contender. Has the world gone mad? The writing is some of the most unnatural and illogical I've ever seen in a prestige drama. Let's have some fun breaking it down together. Why You Should Read this Courageous Masterpiece (Solzhenitsyn)

In this video, I try to convince you to read Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich." This concise, immersive novel makes you a prisoner navigating a single agonizing day in a Soviet labor camp (gulag). I'll also read aloud the opening page so you can decide for yourself. It's a testament of human resilience. It's a historical revelation. And it took not just intellect...

12 Angry Men: The Test We All Fail
Просмотров 3 тыс.28 дней назад
12 Angry Men isn’t just a movie; it’s a test. It asks us: Who are we when things get tough? Movies let us imagine we’re heroes-saving the world, rescuing our family. But what if we’re not strong or courageous? What if we’re weak and afraid? We all fear judgment, but heroes are willing to suffer it. Even when they're afraid. Still, heroes need support. And courage is contagious. #moviereview #12...
Why is Anora so Shallow and Disappointing?
Просмотров 4,6 тыс.Месяц назад
Anora is quite possibly the most overrated movie of 2024. I love Sean Baker's other work, but this was a huge letdown (also gave me a headache at one point). Here’s why everyone’s wrong about Anora-and why I wouldn't even recommend it, let alone call it the best of the year. We've got: • A section-by-section breakdown of Anora. • Comparisons to Sean Baker’s previous work. • Critique of the stor...

How Deadpool & Wolverine Got Totally Wasted
This is what the Bible refers to as “The widows might” a poor woman with starving children giving all she has for the goodness of God.
Really enjoyed your commentary, we need more Robin Hood’s nowadays. #wherecanifindarealliferobinhood??
In honor of Robin Hood, let's all steal our subscription back from a big creator and give that watch time to the needy 😉
I stopped watching halfway thru, so banal…
🤣🤣 I really should have stopped. I'm a sucker for moral dilemmas. I kept telling myself somehow the writing quality would improve and the payoff would be fascinating.
JEEZ why do they not do animation anymore 😞😞😞 I loved the good old age of disney where they had great animation and great music! (The Classic Disney Live action movies where good too like Mary Poppins) but they need to return to classic Disney, they used to have great animation
Out of all other movies by Sean Baker, the fact that this one was to be recognized and go viral was somewhat dissapointing to me. The whole plot was made to be overly long and poorly constructed. The actors were doing a great job but the script provided no character development at all. The movie is named after and revolved around Anora but at the end of the movie, we still get to know so little about her. Throughout the whole first 2 hours of screentime busy with no other than the screaming, chasing and endless drama; we never truly get to have a deep understanding of Anora's life and her feelings about the whole situtation. Like why she doesn't like to be called Anora, why she doesn't want to speak Russian (yes, the answers were given to these but they all were some superficial details), was she happy with her previous life, what is her persona, how did she really feel about Ivan etc. These were never really answered in the precise manner. The whole emotional development of her was tried to be fitted into the last 5 minutes. I understand that in the last scene by offering her body, it was the only way she knew how to show gratitude to Igor and it was the moment for her to eventually have her breakdown but it felt so rushed and added last minute just for the movie to have some additional psychological background. Other than that, most of the movie was seemed to be pointless and long as mentioned in the video. That whole 30-minute search for Ivan did absolutely nothing for the script: it didn't practice any character bonding, no contribution to the plot in the end and not even entertaining. Many side characters were left lost in the plot: Lulu, Crystal, Diamond, her sister etc. didn't really do anything that was relevant to the plot. I really liked the idea of the dynamic that was tried to be constructed between Anora and Igor. It was emphasized that they were both working class and for that reason he was the only one who did not judge Anora for her work. As they both were not valued by the upper class other than being a tool of work or entertainment, they were meant to be sharing a humanly connection. But this whole dynamic was felt to be lost among the main elements of the plot which itself didn't mean much to me. I felt like with such a story, such an amazing cast and a successful director too, the movie could have so much potential but the context was lost in the mess of the events. It was still a good movie in my opinion though. In its essence, it was enjoyable. I viewed it as a good movie that had more potential but turned out as a watchable comedy with hints of a deeper analysis. I just don't see the hype that people make of it, overanalysing its scenes and portraying it as being this unpredictable complex psychological and sociological masterpiece.
Very well said. I agree. Baker's other movies were special because any random screenwriter in Hollywood couldn't write them. He seemed to really understand his characters. If you told me that some random Hollywood screenwriter wrote Anora I wouldn't be surprised. I noticed that Baker does have an affinity for loud arguments. That's what happens with artists. Eventually they indulge their worst impulses. I remember feeling like the end of Red Rocket was too noisy and the comedic value of those arguments was wearing thin.
Not even AI could write it xD
Lol it's gotta be an alien then
@@BraveNewSlop on manatees with balls
I haven't seen this but I'd seen some positive reviews. The dialogue in the clips you show is hilariously clunky 😀.
The script is bad TV quality. I know you watch a lot of films, more well watched than me I'm sure. Do you think there's been a progressive slackening of critical standards and writing quality? Or do you try to avoid a lot of these Hollywood movies altogether.
@@BraveNewSlop No, I don't think there has been a significant decline in traditional, informed film criticism ....but it is hard to find amidst the endless sensationalist race for content and clicks, unthinkingly parroting the same phrases. There's no audience for a middling review. It has to be either the best or the worst. Interestingly Emilia Perez seems to have gone from being the best film ever to the worst film ever in the space of a month 🤔😂
@@steve4films 😂Haven't seen that one. Do you have a critic you trust and like? I have read so many different critic reviews in my life, and yet never found anyone who is remotely as insightful as Ebert. I understand that there are once-in-a-generation voices, but surely there's someone who at least offers a fraction of his consistent wisdom.
@ I think you just have to find people with similar tastes that you trust, ideally who also talk about some films you might not have heard of. 🤔 …and try to ignore/mute the reviewers who talk rubbish 😆.
some thoughts. First, there is the old adage about how critics become critics because they're not good at creating themselves. Maybe unfair, but this made me think of it. Second- Is there any possibility this film was meant to be a satire if it was made up of all the elements this guy complained about? Three- I have an issue with saying movies are "objectively terrible" and creators can't admit to that. Opinions really can vary, and it doesn't mean someone is a shill, or whatever. There are definitely "big" movies that have tanked that I've liked, and there's often the case that movies that didn't succeed find a following later, or movies that were initially popular later are seen to be not very good (I remember distinctly there was a phenomenon with "The Phantom Menace" where at first everyone thought it was awesome and then some time later there was sort of this slow agreement that actuallly it wasn't that good.) What annoys me about this is there are people who are so passionate about their views that a particular film is objectively terrible and some sort of moral perversion that they can take a view that people who have a different opinion are not just wrong but evil in some way, and this is especially bad when they are looking at things through a particular lens. I've found this tendency with critics declaring various things as "woke garbage", when I didn't even see any "wokeness" and they interpret these messages or ideas that seem like takes where they are looking for that and see it everywhere and then get angry and color the whole movie that way. An example of this might be the new Batman animated series. Yes, it has some race changes (and one intersting choice to depict the Penguin as a female burlesge dance) but generally these have zero effect on the story and their's no "woke messaging", the show just does new takes on characters instead of repeating BTAS. I thought it was great, but I feel like for some people, they see that and it colors their whole perception of the show, when the topic if race literally isnt even brought up in the show (to a point of conspicousness as its otherwise supposed to be set in the 30s, but racism doesnt seem to be a thing that exists) Now maybe they can dislike the show for other reasons, but thats pretty much the criticism ive seen and its like.... it literally has no effect on the story. But then they try to do these interpretations of things in the plot as "woke". Like saying Clayface was imagined as an "incel" which is so ridiculousness, he is an actor who was always consigned to play the villian because of he looks, found a doctor with a cream that could change his looks, becomes clayface, gets rejected by the actress he liked who thought they would be together if he was more attractive and when she didnt reciprocate, goes on a revenge murder spree. So yeah, you could interpret that as a "metaphor for angry incels"- or if you're not looking through that lens, it's just a grim noir origin for the character that isnt that different then his origin in BTAS where he has an accident and isnt getting parts and needs a cream to model is face then has the accident. My point is, if you're looking for a "woke" interpetation, you can see it anywhere and trying to write things that couldn't possibly be interpreted that way would be boring and constricting. Like I see this eveyrwhere these days. Yes, there is definitely trends where there is some of that, but the irony is that these people become like the "snowflakes" they criticize for seeing racism, sexism, etc. everywhere. Because yes, you can interpret anything as racist/sexixt etc. (Why arent there any of these people? Oh there are, why are they characterized this way? Is this observation about this character a statment about people like that?) They don't see that they are doing the exact same thing. Anyway, rent over.
Appreciate the thoughts here. The movie isn't a satire, neither Drinker nor his fans (who have an incentive to say so) have mentioned it. There was no text about making a satire in the Kickstarter either. However, I agree with a lot of what you're saying. We sometimes see what we want to see when we judge the world (movies, people, ideas). It's dangerous to live in an echo chamber. Where I think we disagree is that I think the greatest critics do make cases for why something is "objectively" bad, while being open to disagreement and consideration. Ebert is an example. He sometimes phrases things as his subjective take, and sometimes as an objective quality of the movie. However, he is also open to reflection and has even written pieces about later in life re-appraising a movie. Hope you stick around and check out future channel videos. Would love to have you!
Clearly a fantasy as the Drinker seems incapable of introspection, which is of course the, or at least among, the point(s). Very amusing and creative nonetheless.
Lol, thank you. I am extremely curious what has gone on behind the scenes with Drinker after his movie bombed. Has he expressed any responsibility, or merit to the criticism, in conversations with friends or co-producers? What did he think when seeing the backlash? As far as creators go, any highly active influencer with millions of followers seems to have a case of narcissism. They were somewhere on that spectrum before the fame, and pushed further along by the constant worship. However, I don't think Drinker seems really all that narcissistic in comparison. Like, let's say you sprung a surprise question about his failed movie during an interview. I don't think he'd react in an aggressive, confrontational way. I feel like he'd just kind of shut down or try to crack a joke and move on. This is just speculation from my research on him for the video. I honestly think he's a sort of insecure guy who is in way over his head. That doesn't absolve him at all. I just think that out of a lot of these creators who "behave badly" either by being hypocrites, fomenting hatred, etc, he seems most like a guy capable of reformation. Again, just speculation.
I realize this is may sound misplaced or disrespectful towards the intent of your essay, but I want to get this off my chest. This movie was a terrible idea. Wolverine is an incredibly popular character across most demographic categories, but certainly, he’s a favorite among children. The one film featuring Wolverine that was unsuited for children, and was properly rated R, was Logan, an adult film that depicted violence with at least some respect for its tragedy and consequences. The Deadpool character built its popularity from depicting violence as though it’s a spectator sport, and turns the most extreme damage to human beings into a joke. Deadpool is not supposed to be for kids, but of course, has made its way into that age group. Violence is fascinating for most children, even as it has dubious effects, particularly on prepubescent children. It’s easy to exaggerate or entirely fabricate (generally for political reasons) those effects, but the longstanding overreach on the topic does not abate the actual harm done. The Wolverine and Deadpool film is utterly irresponsible, as it invites children to see another adventure with one of their great heroes but delivers them an unrestrained sitting with Deadpool. This is little different to parents sitting their little children down to watch, say, Aliens, or even Saw, with that difference being Deadpool is actually worse, as it encourages viewers to laugh at violence, suspend their empathy, objectify human beings, and grow comfortable with violent death as entertainment. It normalizes and even encourages coarseness in how we relate, and turns on in adults the childish power fantasies parents work to obviate in their children. Hollywood will do anything, to anyone, for money. Our current political circumstances both reflect and enable that pursuit. We’re told that the power of the political right in America is based on their leader saying the “quiet part out loud”, meaning, he’s just saying what everyone is thinking. He’s saying what the left has been forcibly suppressing, and has therefore set the people free to express themselves. But this is only partially correct. They’ve done more than just give people a safe space to express themselves. By normalizing and even valorizing bigotry and anger, they’ve created a catalyst to make those beliefs flourish in the individual, to grow or even to appear where they didn’t exist. The right hasn’t exposed some dark, widely-held undercurrent of retrograde beliefs so much as they’ve nurtured weak seeds to flower and pollinate, and to take new root even where they’d been nearly extinct. The same process, this hardening of compassion, and normalizing of brutality, is encouraged in children by characters like Deadpool. Marvel had no business plastering Wolverine, in his traditional bright yellow comic book costume no less, on the cover of a film with Deadpool. This movie should not exist.
Really interesting thoughts here. I agree with a lot of this. It makes you wonder, which is worse: extreme graphic violence and gore caused to innocents that you see as horrific (as you might find in a horror movie) or milder violence and gore caused to innocents that you see as awesome (as you might find in Deadpool). I'm curious, how do you feel about comics meant for kids featuring Deadpool and Wolverine?
Excellent, compelling, evocative essay, and easily among the best I’ve ever seen or read on this film, or on group dynamics in general. Many of the points you raise warrant their own essays. The most engaging five minutes I’ve spent on RUclips this month. Well done.
Wow, thank you. It's really meaningful to hear this. One of the most inspiring, if not the most inspiring, comments I've gotten. This is bigger than a RUclips channel, and few see that.

The fact that you have 100 dislike says something how influential this guy is how he mislead the younger audience. which is sad considering how they look a bad movies anymore.

great video!
Thank you! :) Glad you enjoyed
I couldn’t disagree with some of your points more. You go off on a tangent about someone in something close to an office setting saying “Happy Halloween” as if that doesn’t happen? Maybe you haven’t experienced that? I know I have. The “joke” lines, that you panned, make sense in context (which you’ve stripped). They’re not zingy one-liners, they’re characters playing off each other to build atmosphere so that the jury isn’t just completely flat. You also misunderstood “how can we continue if we can’t reach a verdict”. The jury is deadlocked and they have decided that they won’t be able to agree on a verdict but only then does someone say “let’s continue to talk about it”. So it makes sense (once again, in the context of the scene) as “how can we continue [to move toward a verdict via discussion] if we can’t reach a verdict” Further, you complain about schlocky writing and then you hit us with “have their brains rotted so much that all slop tastes the same to them”. Maybe this is just rage bait like another commenter suggested and I’m the engagement you’re looking for to feed the algorithm. I really don’t think this movie is that bad and I hope you can see some of the bad faith you’ve put into this video
Very much appreciate the respectful constructive criticism. We may have to agree to disagree. I left tons of poor writing on the cutting room floor, so to speak. 1. Maybe my point about the Happy Halloween was poorly phrased. The chorus of dreary monotone Happy Halloweens feels very unnatural to me. I've only ever heard Happy Halloween said in a playful, teasing, or ironic manner. Never in a rote emotionless way. Because it's not a serious holiday. I may be wrong. 2. I'm not sure how they're not one-liners? They're forced, poorly written one-liners inserted unnaturally. No one responds to any of these one-liners. 3. I may not be understanding this point. You said, "how can we continue [to move toward a verdict via discussion] if we can’t reach a verdict." Is that not an inherently illogical statement? 4. There has to be a difference in writing expectations between a RUclips video and a movie script, no? If you want to compare stories I've written to the story the guy wrote, that's perfectly fair. I'm not criticizing his Tweets, I'm criticizing a movie. Are you curious to see my screenwriting? I can send you an example video from a previous channel. 5. This isn't rage bait, I genuinely think this movie is bad. I think the script is bad, most of the acting is terrible, it's filmed lazily too. There are certainly strong negative reviews of this movie too, from both critic and audience. Are those also rage bait? I mean, yes, this video is comedic in nature and I'm having fun by hyperbolizing, and I'm being provocative. But that doesn't mean I don't believe these are examples of bad writing, and that the movie is bad. This video is basically the type of conversation I'd have with a friend about the movie. Again, I appreciate your respectful comment and I would love to hear more from you on a future video if you're willing to stick around and see where the channel goes!
His "pitchfork" seems to be a lacrosse stick with something taped on the end. So I think it is supposed to be a playful "what's that?" about his makeshift pitchfork. But you know, delivered by somebody who has settled for a very dull movie directed by a strange old man.
Lol it's just so thoughtlessly written. Are both of her lines are meant to be sarcastic? Both the, "What's that?" And the "Nice" after he tells her? If so, that's a much snarkier and borderline mean way to act. It's one thing to playfully snark at someone for a poor design. But to double down after they tell you and sarcastically add, "Nice," makes it clear you're still disapproving. Just over-analyzing for fun here lol. Also, to add another layer here, the pitchfork is the centerpiece of their costumes. Without it, no one would know who they were. It's so goofy that a husband and wife who make homemade costumes together for Halloween would make them completely separately and with no shared idea on the defining prop. It would be like if a couple were going as Harry Potter and Hermione with homemade costumes and the wife never saw the homemade wands until the last second. But yes, such a dull movie.
@@BraveNewSlop So true, lol. This movie gave me "real people don't talk that way" vibes stronger than almost any mainstream non-Shyamalan movie I can remember, especially in the jury scenes.
@ Lmao, it's so funny that we're in the minority of people who felt that way
Shrek 2 is overloaded with parodies
Yeah I agree. Too many references
While it would've been fun for them to recreate the fairytail creature swamp scene in the factory it makes much more sense that there's some sort of oompa loompa species used for an assembly line plant that has probably been around for a long time.
That's interesting, you see Fairy Godmother as immortal as having had the factory for generations? I think they could have easily had a line about "expanding the business" and so she'd hired some newer workers.
Honestly I thought the movie was pretty good up until the third act when I feel like it just sort of wraps itself up very suddenly. I feel like the movie’s strengths are in Hoult’s performance. He’s electric in this.
I'd agree that Hoult carries the movie. I don't quite agree he's as good as you say. I think he plays his character a bit too moral. Like, for example, when he discussed being an alcoholic or in the flashback scene to considering a drink at Rowdy's Hideaway. I couldn't sense any of this "alcoholic bad man" that he described being in the past. Hoult just exudes "good person" energy generally (like making his Max Mad Fury Road antihero so lovable and sympathetic). I thought he turned it up too much in the dramatic scenes. But, hey, considering that I probably wouldn't have managed to finish the movie without Hoult in it, that says a lot for him.
Why do you think they used the Oompa Loompas? Maybe they didn't want to add another subplot? They already were complicating things with the Fiona's dad subplot
lol at all our favorite side characters complaining of unsafe work conditions and oppression😂
Lol, and they'd be making hilarious things in the factory too
bro ur a Debbie downer this was a fun dramedy with plastic surgery injections of uncut gems plastered in there. nothing too serious to take in
The pitchfork scene was rlly bad but when he fixed it I actually jumped back and was like “wait that is good!” This guy is legit
Lol I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not 🙃
@ I’m being serious 😭
@ Aww thank you 😇
Never heard of this movie and was looking into finding out about it through criticism but for someone who complains about people not acting human you don't seem to have much experience with them. Adults don't say Happy Halloween? Have you never had a job that requires polite but minimal interaction with others? And how did you manage to criticise the "heart attack/gas" line so wrongly and yet so loudly? The issue with that line isn't that it was just gas--this is a real, common occurrence, and idk what rock you live under that you've never heard of it--the issue is "they" (presumably the doctors) would not tell him he was having a heart attack--usually, it would be that the *patient* thinks they are having a heart attack, EKG shows fine, ends up being gas or heartburn bc believe or not bud, your digestive system isn't contained entirely in your butthole.
I've just never heard anything close to a monotone chorus of Happy Halloween. I've only ever heard Happy Halloween wished with playfulness or irony, considering it's not a serious holiday at all. You might say, "Have a great memorial day weekend," or something in a dry monotone, but in my experience, not "Happy Halloween." It would be as strange to me as a room full of people intoning "Happy Birthday" As far as gas, I thought acid reflux, heartburn, etc would cause higher chest symptoms. But I never knew "just gas" could mimic heart attack symptoms. These aren't the reasons the movie is bad, the movie is bad because it's all like this. But if I'm objectively wrong in my comments about the gas I may be able to cut out the part where I correct it.
Love ani she's so hot
One of the most important books of the 20th century.
I strangely had never heard of it or seen it on lists before. Has modern culture forgotten it? Or have I just not seen much about it.
@BraveNewSlop believe it or not, it's actually considered politically incorrect, for lack of a better term. Many people resent Solzhenitsyn for exposing the Soviet police state. Back when he wrote it, many Westerners still had an idealised view of how the USSR worked. Academics, in particular, still hold a grudge, which is why it never seems to be on any college curriculum.
@@alextrivunovic644 Interesting, is there a source for this?
@BraveNewSlop probably, but I'm speaking more from personal experience. In my high school in Sweden, Solzhenitsyn was covered. Once i went to college in the States and asked professors about him, i often got hostile reactions. Over the years since then, the few times I've seen him mentioned in media, it was almost always negative. I assume this has to do with his personal social and political views. He was both anti-communist and anti-capitalist, which means he had few, if any, admirers in the West. Catholic distributists might be an exception.
@ Gotcha, that's interesting. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is a journalistic account. There's not really any philosophizing. Just cold hard truth. For people to ignore something as powerful as this work because they dislike the author seems crazy. That's not normally how we treat classic works of art. I did in fact get a commenter saying this was "right-wing propaganda" which is absurd. It's sad when people apply political labels to everything...
heard from youtubers this movie was great and once i heard the premis and he actors in it i though "hell yeah i will watch that" when the credits rolled i just felt nothing.
Lmao. It's such a poorly written movie.
"ILLOGICAL" yes the classic mainstay of dumb ass takes that require exclusively white hetero-normative ways of thinking. No nothing can be interpreted outside a 1950s American societal ideal that everyone has to subscribe to. It's only illogical because this random white man thinks it wouldn't make sense. Wow. thanks for such useless critique...
This movie was actually really interesting, didn't hit every note the best it could, but it did a great job making the plot interesting and the characters were not as bad as you've cherry picked them to be. Your analysis of the dialogue is far too critical for the wrong reasons, you have to look at the character as a whole and not just what they are saying, cause sometimes a character saying something illogical or confusing is how that character is meant to be. I believe the dialogue was pretty realistic honestly, especially for a movie that clearly took a grounded approach it worked well. Make sure you enjoy movies instead of just judging them for what they could be, otherwise you won't find much joy in what is a fantastic art form.
Appreciate the thoughts here. Maybe we can agree to disagree. In a lot of ways, I think the longer scenes are worse than the short odd moments. I'm curious, just to get an idea, what might you rate the movie out of 10? Also, feel free to check out my video on 12 Angry Men if you're curious how I might view a similar movie, but one I loved.
I can't even lie, viewing movies like this must be so exhausting. Adults like Halloween. That's why there are adult Halloween parties. Also why Halloween movies are so popular. People absolutely say Happy Halloween in real life. I do find it funny that you are critiquing the movie for having unrealistic dialogue and you don't know that Halloween is a popular holiday for adults. And no, it absolutely was an ironic line about the pitchfork. She is poking fun at how it was made. This is obvious stuff. Also I'm assuming you're American. If you're an American then you have most likely driven past a bar that has a stupid name. They are all over this country.
Hmm, I don't find it exhausting. I find it invigorating. Movies make me feel all sorts of things, from revulsion to boredom to aggravation to joy and inspiration and reflection. Feel free to check out my analyses of Captain Fantastic or 12 Angry Men if you're interested in a celebration of a great work and its effects on us. Appreciate the perspective, let me see if I can clarify my thoughts. First, I may have been unclear in criticizing the movie's tone on Happy Halloween. People also say Happy Birthday, but it'd be weird for a chorus of adults to intone "Happy Birthday" in a gloomy monotone. It's just unnatural. It's possible the original script was intending her to poke fun at how it's made, but the acting doesn't have a hint of irony in her initial line. Or her follow up, "Nice!" Each line is perfectly literal and explanatory. What's that? It's my pitchfork. Nice! Even the lines on paper make it sound as if it's sincere. And the delivery even more so. Sure, bars have dumb names. And sure, I'm being hyperbolic throughout the video because I'm having fun making fun of a movie I thought was terrible. But it did absolutely feel ridiculous to me to have such a silly name for such a serious place. You don't want your actor saying, "Did you stop at Rowdy's Hideaway?" as the inflection point in your emotional climax. It sounds like a Chuck E Cheese or Dave and Buster's type arcade. It sounds like a theme park attraction. Like a mini golf course. Again, I'll accept that in the video I'm exaggerating a bit for humor. But I've got tons of other clips I left on the cutting room floor just because I didn't have time. It's filled to the brim with stuff like this, in my opinion.
You don't wish people Happy Halloween? Halloween and Christmas are the only holidays I really see everyone celebrating. And I did go to the hospital for a heart attack...which turned out to be gas.
Maybe my point was poorly made. I meant to describe the tone of it. Halloween is a silly, fun thing. So people don't really wish it in a serious, dry way. I've never heard anything like a chorus of monotoned, obligatory "Happy Halloweens" in real life. It just feels off, and it's obvious the screenwriter just shoehorned it in as a segue to the next scene in their costumes.
@BraveNewSlop because our main characters are disguising themselves. His wife doesn't even recognize the instrument her husband is associated with using. I'm not saying it is a great film, but it was good. 3.5 to 4 stats.
@ This is so interesting to me. I just can't understand why people liked it so much. I understand being intrigued by the plot at the beginning. But it starts to feel more and more like bad TV, and there's never any real payoff. For example, in 12 Angry Men we get to see the process of convincing the jury. In this movie, we see part of a process and then we cut to the verdict.
It’s a Clint Eastwood film. He’s very old
Right, but we don't need to pretend people are making good things just because they're old. Whether this is terrible or great doesn't change Clint Eastwood's legacy. Though it would have been cool for him to go out a really awesome movie, can't deny.
when i watched the movie i kept on thinking "okay so when is it going to get good" but all of a sudden it ended.
🤣 That's exactly how it felt
I mean I agree with some of the criticisms, but it comes off as pedantic and more nitpicking. If you want to criticize the dialogue as a means of how it shapes its characters, that’s fine, but you never got to the crux of characterization. I’m saying this as someone who found the movie severely flawed too, but I wouldn’t just point out cringe dialogue. The jury for example is far less dynamic than the jury in 12 Angry Men, and that in turn gives less weight to the drama. Each juror in 12 Angry Men had a distinctive personality that reinforced their motivations. You don’t get that in Juror #2. You only get a few while the rest are consolidated into them just not wanting to be there. Then there’s the overwrought directing. Too many shots in this movie try to emphasize it’s telling of our justice system but it’s so obvious and meandering it made me roll my eyes. Like the cut from the prosecutor’s reaction from the verdict to the state emblem. A prosecutor/politician that all of the sudden cares about justice even though she’s shown to only think about her campaign at the beginning.
I wanted to have some fun pointing out absurdities of the kind I rarely see in prestigious, critically acclaimed dramas. You're right, it's nowhere near a conventional review. I'm experimenting right now with what sorts of content I want to make. I could definitely make straightforward reviews--would be quicker, especially with the editing obligations. We'll see where the channel ultimately goes. Check out my Anora review if you're looking for a more conventional breakdown of a movie as a whole. Agree with your points. Especially the one about the prosecutor/politician. She's a side character, we know almost nothing about her. Yet the movie makes it about her moral journey rather than the main character, who at least has a little more depth. We don't care if she wins her campaign, if she loses it, if she forfeits it, if she quits her job, if she moves to Timbuktu. Again, it really feels like a ChatGPT story, because things happen that are vaguely logical (it's possible a prosecutor could have a change of heart) but are not persuasively realistic. A prosecutor changing from politician to detective and then willing to end her political aspirations to do the right thing is something that might occur over the course of an 8-episode TV show. Not in a handful of laughably literal scenes as the B-plot of an episode of Law and Order (like this movie).
the movie was an early giveaway, then I started skiping it and I knew whats the outcome, I just wanted to see how it ends, you can easily tell, no thrill about amd no arguments to be made how it ended
Yeah that's fair. I blame myself for watching it all the way thru
Your analysis is childish and shallow. I liked it. 1 star.
It's alright if we disagree, though I'm curious, what would it take to change your mind?
Rowdy’s Hideaway sounds like it could be a shitty BBQ joint with overly sexualized menu item names
🤣 It sounds more like a strip club
This is a click bait RUclips video. Movie is good. Your channel is dog poo.
Why do you think it's clickbait?
The time lapse argument scene 😆🤣 the clips you pulled make me want to watch this movie just to laugh at it
The time loop? Lol. I guess it could work for a bad movie night
The Kangaroo scene had me dying🤣
That's my favorite part too 🤣
same!! 😂
Yeah I was disappointed with this movie … sad for Clint Eastwood tbh …
Agreed, would have been nice to see something quiet and personal as the last project. This was basically an obnoxious episode of TV.
the movie is based on a french movie called "jurror 7" which is way better
Wait, no way. I didn't realize that. Might check it out. It's funny, the premise is the one thing I gave credit to the writer for. Even that wasn't original!
This movie is really bad, but it managed to do something most bad movies don't. I am usually very quick to identify a bad movie and even quicker to stop watching, yet I kept watching this drivel until credits rolled. I have no idea why I did that.
Lmaooo agreed. Exercising the right to quit watching or reading something bad is crucial life skill. Sometimes slop is so bad it almost becomes the equivalent of mindless scrolling. You're not enjoying it but you're trapped in a semi-conscious passive state.
I miss old Disney
Me too. I miss hand drawn animation
Yikes, some of those clips make it seem terrible. Wasn’t going to watch because it doesn’t seem like my thing, but definitely not feeling it now. Hollywood films have become so impersonal and almost seem like they don’t want to connect with viewers. Seems like this is more of the same.
Well said. I hold out hope that criticism can sway the profit machine a bit. But I don't know how to improve critic talent, integrity, and honesty. Like, this movie should have been panned. Even if regular audience still liked it, even if it didn't lose a dime, the people involved in making it would feel some shame and reputational damage. That might affect their future opportunities. As it should be! It's as if critics have forgotten that art is supposed to be a highly competitive field. The lower the standards, the worse movies get. The lower the standards, the more the quality stuff is kept out. It feels like criticism now operates with the assumption that the vast majority of movies will be good, and just a small fraction will be bad.
What do you think was the worst movie of 2024? And what do you think about subscribing 😉
Drive Away Dolls. I have not seen Madame Web nor Kraven.
@@kasaibouF29 Haven't seen any of those actually. Noticed Drive Away Dolls was a Coen movie. Do you normally like Coen Brothers? I unpopularly think they're super overrated.
@BraveNewSlop I'm no homophobe, but the excessive lesbianity was too much for me.
Mate i could not care less about the movie. The critical drinker makes me Laugh out loud on a bad day. Thats all that matters better than waisting time on your clickbait boring clip. And he tried didnt work out doesnt make him a lesser legend so please stop waisting our time Please go away now XD
I'm glad he does that for you, there's nothing better than having something like that. For me it's Key and Peele to cheer me up. Drinker writing a bad movie doesn't take that away, any more than Jordan Peele writing a bad movie makes Key and Peele unfunny.
@BraveNewSlop i see what youre doing, reactions is money. Where not all dense here. I wish you luck with this. RUclips is changing but not for the better
@ Serious question here: Why is it more substantive for Drinker to make his 1000th movie review, than for me to make a review of Drinker's movie and Drinker's hypocrisy?
@@BraveNewSlop i cant do what you did thats Making content. And giving a opinion is not the issue. Thats good food for thought. But most people know exactly what youre saying. Look money and a lot of following gives power and power makes you a target and can make u blind. For your own assumptions. So youre right in a way. Butt what i am saying make a original of yourself not leaning on other tubers. Make a different sound and you will attract the crowd.
@ For sure, I agree that if I was just making videos on other RUclipsrs that would be pathetic. I am definitely making my own style of content as well! :)
Interesting commentary
Thank you, I wanted to go deeper. This is someone who's preaching all the time about masculine virtues, what it means to be a man, why male heroism is so important. There's an irony beyond just the hypocrisy about lazy writing. The irony of someone assailing fiction for depicting weak men while in fact he is acting like one in real life. Which is worse?
