diamond sharpening stones 6 the husky 400/600 from home depot unboxing and first edges
continuing the series on diamond stones and doing the introductions and unboxings and first edges. this is the husky from home depot. runs about $15, and is a 400/600 with the 400 being interupted and the 600 being continuous, and is a 2.25"x6". right out of the box, this was a nice stone. no clumps of diamonds to dig out, very little amount of unbonded diamonds. and all at a very atractive price. caltoncutlery.com

diamond stones 5 sharpal 325 and 1200 grit unboxing and first edge

continuing the series on diamond sharpening stones, this one is the sharpal 325/1200 combo stone. this one came highly recommended by outdoors55 {dude has some awesome sharpening pictures on his channel} and he was not wrong. this 325 grit stone is what the dmt's 325's used to be out of the box. i took it out of the box, ran a razor blade over it a bit, and then sharpened a knife to a very reas...

continuing the diamond stone series, this time we take a look at the ezelap 2x6 400 and 600 grit combination stone. right out of the box, it was a pretty nice stone, I ran a razor knife over it for a bit to knock off the loose grit. there were no big clumps of diamonds that needed dug out, and the first edges off it were not bad at all. ill bet in a dozen sharpenings or so, that it will settle ...
diamond sharpening stones 3 the dmt 325

this one was kind of tough to make. the dmt 325 has been my favorite finishing stone for the last 15 years or so. ive been through a lot of them and have seen thier quality go downhill fast over the last 5 years or so. when you get a good one, that doesnt have a bunch of clumped up diamonds that you have to dig out all over it, the edges are beautiful, clean, crisp, and agressive. but the last ...
diamond sharpening stones 2 why mess around with diamonds?
Просмотров 1 тыс.Месяц назад
in this one I ask, why mess around with expensive diamond stones at all when we have norton crystolon silicon carbide stones, man made water stones, and natural arkansas stones and such. diamond stones are incredibly short lived when put to any level of serious use compared to a man made oil stones. caltoncutlery.com

in this new series I am going to be taking a look at diamond sharpening stones. I have several older stones, and a couple of exciting new diamond stones to take a look at. we will do some unboxings, plenty of sharpening, some rope cutting tests with the stones, and take out the microscope and look at the stones themselves and the edges they produce. should be some exciting stuff! caltoncutlery.com

    I’ve had that stone for almost a year. After you use it for awhile it gets much smother. I like it a lot not Shute how long it last. So far I’m amazed with it. I go from the fine side strait to a strop and get a great edge.

    I've been using the 3x8 Ultra Sharp 3 stone set (300,600,1200) for years now. The 1200 is just now starting to go much finer; like the 3000 I bought from them. Wish i hadn't now since I need another 1200. Best Sharpening Stones sells them about $10 cheaper than Amazon. I may just replace the 1200 with this Sharpal. Love the face shave. I'm not brave enough, besides, I'd mess up the beard.

    I do not prefer the interrupted surface diamond stones. I find that the "trash" diamonds tend to congregate around the edges of the plate, and the interrupted surface increases the number of edges exponentially. Still, for under a Jackson, that might be a good beater stone!

    Joe, thank-you for this series. Always charmed. Appreciate you not taking the usual high-falutin approach most do. I love good things but sheesh, you could get X# of these Husky stones vs. DMT or Atoma ++. As you touch on, sure the feel might be a bit less but a good edge is a good edge at the end of the day. The durability will be the real outstanding question here. Does this go a reasonable distance or does it quickly die out and thus we're back to the classic false economy of buying cheap? Look forward to the next video and hope some day to experience the signature thinness behind the edge of your knives! :) Exchange rate for CAD currency is devastating right now...

      thanks for watching! you know i have bought quite a few of the dmts, and if they were the stone that they used to be, i would still be buying them. but not everyone can or can justify affording that kind of money for a disposable stone. for folks that dont use diamonds all the time, so far this would be a nice stone. we will see more about it when I do the looks at the stone and scratch pattern under the microscope, and then the rope cut testing and see how it does :} and I hope to be making knives for a long time, so i hope to be here when you are ready for a knife :}

      @@joecalton1449 Fair enough on the DMTs. You are in a unique position to comment on stones and sharpening; to say you've put the time in would be an understatement and it's what I suspect we all enjoy about having your voice here on RUclips. The context you give to (sadly) a change with DMT is just so right on. I have to wonder if it's the classic situation where a distinctive product and business is sold and the new owners bring short term thinking and a rush to reclaim their investment...all of which works to simply crater the business with cost saving corners being cut. As always, sppreciate your thoughts on sharpening and knives.

    I don't like interrupted stones myself either for precisely that reason. I'm always catching on the holes. I'm sure it's just a way to cheap out on the diamonds. My worry about those stones that are metal on plastic is that they won't stay flat enough, that the plastic might bend and warp and be somewhat out of shape which does away with one of the big advantages of using diamonds in the first place.

    • @joecalton1449
      @joecalton1449 4 дня назад

      that is possible that they could warp. I could check a couple of older interupted stones that i have for flat and see what they look like. i didnt check them when new, but it would maybe give an idea of if that happens alot or not

    Woodash scratches the ectoskeletons of the little critters, so water evaporates through it and they ultimately dehydrate to death. Diatomaceous earth should work the same way though, but it doesn't work very well if it's wet. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. Any kind of wood should create ash, that is sharp enough to work.

    • @joecalton1449
      @joecalton1449 4 дня назад

      that diatomaceous earth didnt work very well at all. it seemed pretty dry to the touch right out of the bag, I wonder if it wasnt dry though. the wood ash works really well and since I have a wood stove, I will always keep a couple of 5 gallon buckets full on hand now.

    For predators, use your tightest chokes and lead #4 buckshot. I’ve had mixed results with lead BB and larger buckshot, but #4 buck in a 3” shell is unbeatable for calling in predators. I personally use XFull turkey chokes and can anchor a coyote out to 50 yards without question. Haven’t tried any further because I carry rifle and shotgun to my sets. If you are expecting raccoons, bobcat, or grey fox you can get by with lead BB. Coyotes seem to soak up lead BB and require another shot to anchor them. Thanks for the review! I’m looking for a quail gun and was understandably curious about this model.

    hey Joe! thanks for the reviewing and comparing different stones. i wonder if you are concerned with the flatness of the stones. the two sharpal 8x3 that i got were heavily dished on the fine side, and the steel plates were bowed so tbey didnt wirk for flattening the backs if woodworking tools or flattening the waterstones. do you think it is irrelevant for knife sharpening? if there is a valley in the center and the edges are sticking out the edge is only touching the very middle and the edge of the stone right?

    • @joecalton1449
      @joecalton1449 10 дней назад

      i did not think to check this one or the other for flatness. I will take a look at them next time i work on them, thanks! for flattening waterstones i would much rather use an inexpensive diamond stone like the harbor freight hone block for around $10 as the flatness of the diamond stone is secondary to the method, if you are rotating your stones while surfacing them, then i think it evens everything out for the most part. i really dont know all that much about chisels so cant really comment on that. for knife sharpening, i think if its really flat then that is a good thing, but i have, and have seen lots of guys put some really nice edges on knives with stones that were badly dished and in serious need of flattening.

    • @krtkv
      @krtkv 8 дней назад

      @ thanks! im my experience, if the corner is sticking out, it can scratch the wyer stone badly, and if the diamlnd plate is dished it only flattens the water stone roughly, maybe its fine for bigger knives but there will be bumps on the surface of the water stone if whatever you are flattening it with has bumps and valleys. also if the stone is bowed like my sharpals were, they will remove more material on either end of the stone so there will be a convex to the stone

    • @krtkv
      @krtkv 8 дней назад

      @ another thing i was wonderin was why you did not include ultra sharp plates in your list. they seem to have been pretty popular around yourube a while ago. i liked them better than DMTs. and for the 6x2 small plates there are am tech brand and ab tools or BE tools whatever, they look just like eze-lap when you remove them from the plastic and they are ca 10-15 euro a piece or 30 for a set of 3 regards

    Quality diamond plates are electroplated not adhesive sprayed on it to bond the diamonds. The diamonds are bound in the nickel layer during electroplating. Very poor quality diamond plates will have the diamonds out on the stone with adhesive and if that's the case that stone won't last at all.

      im pretty sure 8000 DMTs are made using the adhesive because the diamonds are too small to stick out of the nickel plating layer

      that electroplating sounds like it would be better!

      no, I think this one was about $70. but ive been paying around $50 each for the dmt's and if this one lasts, then it will be a much better value

    OUTDOORS55 is a great sharpening channel, Alex Garland is his name. Thanks for this video, I bought this stone but have not sharpened on it yet. I have been busy using the Hapstone RS right now.

    Highly recommend anyone using diamond plates to read "The Diamond Plate Progression" on The Science of Sharp blog.

    a little FYI, the non slip side goes on the bench, the top is made to hold the plate firmly.

      thanks! to tell the truth, I usually just throw away any sort of cheesy holder that comes with stones and use a wet paper towel on a chunk of old 2x4 instead. but this case seems too nice to throw away :}

      @@joecalton1449 that non slip rubber on the bottom is some sort of magic, i don't understand how but it's better than my expensive stone holder.

    Do you strop or hone on anything after 325 grit diamonds? Curious I’ve been playing around with lower grit edges but I strop the edge and use a steel or ceramic hone in between sharpenings to touch an edge up

      the only thing that touches the edge after my 325 grit stone is whatever i am cutting, and then i generally strop it once on each side on my jeans to clean it before I close the knife up and put it back in my pocket. if you strop it on a steel or ceramic rod then you will smooth out the teeth and lose agresssion for future cuts

      Thanks for clarifying, I’m gonna play around with this. I don’t carry any fancy steels and I get them screaming sharp but edge don’t last long. You have made me rethink all I thought I knew. Haha
