I’ve had that stone for almost a year. After you use it for awhile it gets much smother. I like it a lot not Shute how long it last. So far I’m amazed with it. I go from the fine side strait to a strop and get a great edge.
i bought one and used it on a thick 1970's german hunting knife that came with a false edge. hey it did fine to establish an edge a lot faster than i expected... great price at home depot on clearence... husky also has a lifetime warranty... great
I don't like interrupted stones myself either for precisely that reason. I'm always catching on the holes. I'm sure it's just a way to cheap out on the diamonds. My worry about those stones that are metal on plastic is that they won't stay flat enough, that the plastic might bend and warp and be somewhat out of shape which does away with one of the big advantages of using diamonds in the first place.
that is possible that they could warp. I could check a couple of older interupted stones that i have for flat and see what they look like. i didnt check them when new, but it would maybe give an idea of if that happens alot or not
Call me paranoid but I use a wide putty knife with edge trailing strokes and slowly increasing the angle to break in my diamond plates. Looks like you have great control so you do you Joe. Not a fan of interrupted surface. I did like your confirmation of Alex's approval of the Sharpal, and may pick one up. I already have a full set of the Ultrasharp, which I'm very impressed with, but nothing to compare them to. Thanks for another great Joe production!
you are right in that a wider putty knife would probably be better, but that razor scraper was handy, so thats what I went for :} good to hear that you like the ultrasharps!
Joe, thank-you for this series. Always charmed. Appreciate you not taking the usual high-falutin approach most do. I love good things but sheesh, you could get X# of these Husky stones vs. DMT or Atoma ++. As you touch on, sure the feel might be a bit less but a good edge is a good edge at the end of the day. The durability will be the real outstanding question here. Does this go a reasonable distance or does it quickly die out and thus we're back to the classic false economy of buying cheap? Look forward to the next video and hope some day to experience the signature thinness behind the edge of your knives! :) Exchange rate for CAD currency is devastating right now...
thanks for watching! you know i have bought quite a few of the dmts, and if they were the stone that they used to be, i would still be buying them. but not everyone can or can justify affording that kind of money for a disposable stone. for folks that dont use diamonds all the time, so far this would be a nice stone. we will see more about it when I do the looks at the stone and scratch pattern under the microscope, and then the rope cut testing and see how it does :} and I hope to be making knives for a long time, so i hope to be here when you are ready for a knife :}
@@joecalton1449 Fair enough on the DMTs. You are in a unique position to comment on stones and sharpening; to say you've put the time in would be an understatement and it's what I suspect we all enjoy about having your voice here on RUclips. The context you give to (sadly) a change with DMT is just so right on. I have to wonder if it's the classic situation where a distinctive product and business is sold and the new owners bring short term thinking and a rush to reclaim their investment...all of which works to simply crater the business with cost saving corners being cut. As always, sppreciate your thoughts on sharpening and knives.
I do not prefer the interrupted surface diamond stones. I find that the "trash" diamonds tend to congregate around the edges of the plate, and the interrupted surface increases the number of edges exponentially. Still, for under a Jackson, that might be a good beater stone!

I just ordered a cheap set from china, I already confident about how to break them in. Thx for this series.

i was really surprised at how nice it was for the amount of money it cost!
