Hollow Alpaca Socks....Better Than Darn Tough?
In this one-year review video, the reviewer dives into the pros and cons of hollow alpaca socks, comparing them to merino wool socks. The video explains the benefits of alpaca wool, such as its moisture-wicking, antimicrobial, and temperature-regulating properties, as well as the specific strengths of hollow alpaca socks as daily trainers and outdoor activity gear.

Wear lightweight smartwool ski socks in my double boots currently. I may have to give them a try!
@@UnmannedExplorations I have heard good things about those too!
Nice video! 1:58 I don't have a ton of scrambling experience yet but the way I would do this is sit down on the rock on the right and slowly reach for or a short jump to the rock below. Seems less risky. Keep hiking 🥾
@@amols101 you can’t tell very well in the video but the rock on the right was a no go. It was down sloped towards the gap you have to jump over. This jump has been the riskiest thing I’ve done in the mountains. I’d never do it again haha.
Things really changed after they got bought out. Less durable and moved away from the wide toe box for more narrow designs. Some of my older Altra shoes seem to be indestructible.

Hey wondering if I can get your opinion. East coast guy so never really had the opportunity to ski where I was from. Live in the Appalachians now next to a couple of baby ski resorts in comparison to the Rockies. Want to get into skiing and take some lessons. How difficult is it to pick up as an adult? And how consistent would you need to be skiing to get basic proficiency? I know there are a lot of variables but wanting to get a general idea. Thanks man!
Just go consistently and you’ll get better also you gotta accept the fact that you’re gonna get hurt
@@UnmannedExplorations hey! Not sure about skiing. I snowboard

I’ve done both sometimes I don’t got time between work and kids so if they promise it back in 20 min I’ll just go smoke a sun blunt while I wait I know it’s pricy but I’m paying for extra luxury time in my opinion

YES. MY HELMET HAS SAVED ME QUITE A FEW TIMES. I once caught a bump and bounced off my helmet like this guy. Even after impact, I was coughing and dizzy. Just imagine what would happen if I didn't have a helmet on
I was headed to REI this coming Sunday and will try on a pair. They are on sale now which is always a plus. I will also try on the Pursuit 2. I have been using Altra for a long time but have never been happy with the durability of any of them. Of course at REI you get that one year warranty which I have always felt was very generous.
Completely agree with you regarding the Altra, I'm a very disappointed customer. I have had two pairs of Torins, where the big toe area came through and the sole stripped away from the cushioning, and two pairs of Outroad... First pair, the big toe area came through after 150 miles and the 'rand (as it would be called in a boot)', came away on both shoes - the other pair is going the same way.... Not impressed. I have recently been advised to try Topo, so I will give them a go. I have a pair of Hobibear trail shoes that seem pretty decent.
Depending on ambient temperature, the gloves on poles can freeze in seconds due to sweat saturation. Not taking them off is the best, puting them close to your body such as into pockets is great.
Putting them in your pockets is a good idea. Although I've never had my gloves freeze in seconds on my pole lol.
@ChadLubinski I believe that. High humidity, winds above 40km/h, -15°C and you are set 😁
This might be controversial, but I don’t scrape off the wax. I let the abrasive snow do the work for me.

I almost died trusting the R rating on klymite sleeping pads. Love your content. I just cringe everytime you blow up that pad.
@@patrickdolan. did you take it in the snow?
@ChadLubinski Yes I was using their highest value R rating pad 3 years ago. I got so cold that night I had to hike 2 miles back to my vehicle. Luckily I was just out in late fall in my local hike in camp sites. I've camped with other pads under 20 degrees just fine. There's numerous videos on RUclips of others saying their R ratings aren't close to what they say.
Very interesting, just bought the book.
@@MrProphetius nice! Let me know what you think of it

Any recommendations for good sun hoodies on multi day or week expeditions? I’ve been wearing Kuhl but they have some stank to them after a while. Can’t find any good ones with merino like properties.
@@UnmannedExplorations you know.. I haven’t found any yet either. I want to get my hands on the Alpha Direct hoodies. I’ve heard a lot of good things about them but they’re always out of stock.
@ I’ll have to check them out. Until then I’ll stay stanky lol. Not like it matters that much anyways in alpine climates but I try to mitigate it as much as possible.

I got slammed with AMS after moving from Paradise to Muir which I didn't expect at all (but I've since learned is very common). I had a terrible night but luckily recovered enough by morning to continue. Agree with you that Hood was more technical. Climbed a very icy Old Chute which was much scarier than anything I did on Rainier. We were able to glissade down from Muir nicely w/o trashbags but this depends entirely on the snow conditions so that's a good point. Glissading from Muir is so much better than walking. Paradise to Muir was roasting hot. DC to summit was freezing cold in my heaviest gear. Gotta have the layering system dialed in. Really bad traffic in this park...no joke.
Glad you recovered from that AMS!
So this is actually pretty cool. I happened upon your channel looking up content creation (something I'm wanting to branch into) and came across this video. This is one of the exact videos I was hoping to create. A solo hike across the highline trail. What a small world. Awesome video!
Nice! I'm glad you liked it. They are by far the most fun videos to create.
Im telling you Altra MT King's 2.0 are simply the best running shoes I've owned..

A wrist sling once saved my life when falling off a ridge off rope. Ice axe wedged behind a rock and I ended up hanging from my wrist instead of tumbling further down the slope.

Have you noticed any problems heel striking vs neutral or toe striking? I thought that was bad for your knees..
@@r1pperduck I don’t physically comprehend how people run on their toes tbh. I have flat feet and have always ran on my heels. With that said, I think the knees are very resilient to all that
@ChadLubinski fair enough.
You did it all wrong. 😁 It's a myth that ultrarunning needs endless hours of training. 25 -80 miles is usually what it takes. With 80 mile per week you are in world class ultrarunning territory. In the range of 25-50 miles per week you can do most if not all races if you build up to it properly. You might not win them but you can do them. And no long run needs to be longer than 3 hours / 20 miles whatever comes first.
@@fritz4345 yeah the most miles I ran a week for my 100 was 40
No one even considered starting at McKee Draw when doing the Highline until 5-6 years ago. The Highline Trail was always Leidy Peak or even Chepeta Lake to Mirror Lake Hwy. Locals were only concerned about hiking the Uintas, not trail 025. Even the authoritative book on the Unitas by Jeff and Brad Probst say the Highline Trail is Leidy Peak to Mirror Lake Hwy. So don't feel like you didn't complete the Highline Trail if you started at Leidy or Chepeta...both are just fine. And in Rock Creek Basin, going around to Helen and Lightning Lakes and even up to Gladys and Rosalie Lakes is prettier anyway (even more so after the fire).
I did the John Muir Trail in the early 70s things were different in those days almost everyone that started finished and I did the whole hike without a food stop. I also left really early June 23 to be exact going north to south. I had all the topo maps and Starrs Guide. I got lost once and it was mostly because of a lot of snow. There was a lot of snow, but I also left really early and walking on snow when it’s frozen was a lot easier than when it started to thaw in the afternoon I also highly recommend to start hiking even before you can see where you’re going. It does two things: to get you warm you get over the passes early And allows you to spend the afternoons, relaxing. I was occupied fishing every day and of course I ate trout every single day. I also never had a drop of rain fall on me. I’ve hiked sections of the trail and some of the side sections many times and usually the rains come in July and early August And can be pretty nasty. Also, in those days there were no Bear buckets we slung our stuff in the trees. I only had a problem with bears in Yosemite and that problem is still the same. Those bears are not necessarily really wild anymore today the ones you meet like in Kings Canyon Sequoia Keep their distance. It took 21 days with one easy day

Love these Chad. For the past 15yrs I've been big into weightlifting. In 2024, because of an accident, I had to take some time off and with the reality that I am now 40 (haha) I have started to incorporate Yoga 3x a week.
