There is some misunderstanding about the capabilities of FLIR systems when it comes to seeing the planet Venus. While it is possible to see it, it depends on the atmospheric conditions, positioning, and intensity of the viewing. Most of the time I spot it with a day cam, then follow through with the infrared. In this instance, it's thermal signature was rather weak.

They are very hard to manually track!

When I first saw this in the wide field-of-view, it looked like a "mothership" slowly entering the scene. However, once zooming in I saw it for what it is- a blimp. Another good example that usually things are what they appear to be in mid-wave infrared.
