Building a custom, high clearance exhaust system for my Jeep Comanche.

I sure hope this quiets things down at least a little bit. The welding is horrible, the flow dynamics probably suck, and the tubes are probably too close to the floor but darn it I'm going to make this work one way or another. I'm still waiting on some parts to finish this system to come in the mail but in the weeks to come, I'll be able to start this Jeep and see If any of this makes a differe...

Track bar mount, fender trim and flex test of the Jeep Comanche

Why you should install a "rear suck down winch"

There are a lot of rock crawlers out there set up to use their front winch as a "suck down winch". Here's a different perspective that I think not a lot of people think about. The rear axle Is more or less neglected when it comes to suck down winches. Here's how to get coolant to the rear mounted radiator. No bend method

    Pulling down the suspension makes a huge difference. I think the biggest advantage to it is the huge reduction in the pogo effect that happens when a bump is hit and the suspension reacts to it. A lot of people run a central limit strap to help stop the suspension from unloading, but the winch is adjustable on the fly allowing more droop travel when desired, or less when need be. I run suck down winches in the front and rear. I don’t like using my recovery winch to pull down on the suspension, because if I’m in a position to need a winch line, I may not want to have to unload my suspension to make it available.

    when you were talking about brakes, when you are in 4x4 and locked diffs, there is no brake bias, each wheel is mechanically link and even if you only had one wheel brake, all the tire would brake at the same rate. also read in the comments you are separating you front and rear brakes? do you have a t-case that can do fwd/ front digs?

    • @BlackAndBlueGarage
      @BlackAndBlueGarage 15 дней назад

      No I'm planning on separating the front and both rears for diff steering/cutting brakes. I think I can shift to 2wd and hit both rear brakes for drag braking. And good point about 4wd in relationship to brake pressure splits. It's just something that popped in my mind at the time. This will be my first full size selectable locker; I'll probably go Atlas t-case when I build an actual rock crawler. I just hope this will be good enough for a trail truck setup.

    I feel like the only reason someone would recommend you niesh down would be to keep the algorithm happy. If you were doing this with the anticipation of making good money someday. Example being advertisers want to reach a specific demographic. I wish We could just follow our wave of A.D.D. And post whatever… but the audio book; RUclips for dummies tells me otherwise. I love all your content! You are a natural. Your viewers like me are unbiased. I have a channel for Jeep XJ, and RC Crawers. The jeep stuff gets higher views. I feel its because there are more 1:1 Jeep people then people exposed to how fun and Practical RC Crawlers are Compared to 1:1. Blaw blaw… my point is: I am a family man, and right now just doing the RC Crawlers and work and Family takes all my time. But I love the RC hobby, it can be cheaper, and can be safer. But when I replace the heater cores on my 2 XJ’s im going to video it and put a video together and put it on my Jeep channel. Because content is content. The world needs men like You!!! I can see this having multiple benefits with a lifted truck. I.E. lower the bed/tailgate for easier loading/unloading, or to get under a gooseneck or 5th wheel that is just a bit too low. It beats letting the air out of the tires, especially on a dually!

  • @NT5RA_Still_Learning
    @NT5RA_Still_Learning 22 дня назад

    I am guessing that a suck down winch can be adjusted on the fly, provided you have a remote in the cab. When it comes to sucking down, I'm sure you can know how much line to take up by ear, hearing the load on the winch. But how do you know how much line to let out when returning to regular ride height? Too much and you've got a loop hanging under the truck. Does it basically require that you stop and get out every time you want to adjust it?

    • @BlackAndBlueGarage

    Good explanation of a rear suck down winch brother. I've been using them on my offroad trucks for at least 25 years or more. Just a cheap ATV winch with some nylon rope attached to a welded loop on the axle truss. For trucks with a fairly stock rear axle I've made loops that attach to the diff cover bolts. Once you start using a suck down winch you will quickly discover how useful they can be.

    Excellent video! Im curious to see what you are going use to protect the radiator from firewood and parts and what not. Great work, I love it!!👍⭐️

      I hope to be able to package all my parts and tools so they're locked down somehow but it's worth thinking ahead. I angled the fan up slightly in case it has to flow over toolboxes and a cooler behind it. That's about as far as I got tho

      @@BlackAndBlueGarage I get it. I don’t know what others are doing. I like where you put the Radiator. It’s low and protected by the role cage. I was thinking maybe a framed piece of expanded metal from the top of the radiator straight down to the bed and secured. This may help prevent restricted air flow, and keep your ice cream from melting on your emergency grocery runs,😉

    Where did you get that bead roller from and how much did it cost cuz that is cool I like that it's small enough that it won't take too much space

      Bead roller is just a cheap one on Amazon and I think I paid around 40 to 50

    I used aluminum tube, and go with raising the floor. I did the wrap initially and it was still hot in the cab. Raising the floor took care of that. For grommets, I used 5/16 or 3/8th rubber hole split lengthwise to insulate the holes and protect the tube.

      Great idea on the hose. I plan on building a false floor over the passenger feet. I'll have exhaust right under the floor too so I gotta do something

    Get you some .023 solid wire with 75/25 gas for sheet metal. So easy, it feels like cheating.

      I'll order some. I'm on the lookout for a used gas bottle at the moment too. I have a little one that would work for now

      Would be cool but Id need bags to get out of my place. I have all kinds of stuff I can do for season 2. I'm trying to get titles and registration on some things before I make that decision
