    speaking of Lacey Michelle, that tigrina alba x aclandiae alba (4N) I got from you as a seedling like four years ago finally produced a growth with a sheath. Now, what is interesting is that I cut the rhizome this spring without repotting it and the growth with the sheath is off the back part of the plant, the new lead on the front did not sheath. Anyway, if it blooms I will tag you on IG.

    hi spencer, good propping skills from your daughter 😀. I do like your DIY benches but one disadvantage is they have no weight to them to stop them falling over. And the pipes are sagging soo much. I think you should think about an upgrade to those one of these days. Or add more supporting bars in the middle to stop the sag and fill them up with builders sand to give them more stability.

    • @SpencerAloysius
      @SpencerAloysius 2 месяца назад

      The DIY benches used to be wired to the walls of my garage and house by clothing line, but since I had to move them due to that electrical box, they are no longer wired because the clothes line doesn't reach properly. The two with the hanging plants also have sandbags at the bottom, but the one that fell over doesn't have one because it used to sit in the middle where it had a lot more support for its sides. I think my use of bamboo poles to try to keep the shadecloth from sagging is making it tip.

    Not sure you need to fret about the cicadas. They don't eat anything as they don't have a functioning mouth. The females slit woody bark on the ends of tree and large shrub branches to lay their eggs in. Not sure if any orchids you have would meet that criteria. Good luck!

    Hi spencer, good luck with them. Much better height. You can always use cable ties to hang the light from the stands you got. What I would do myself would be to get a thin piece of wood from a hardware store that will be long enough to hang or place on the stands and then attach the smaller light to the piece of wood. Just cause I am always trying to minimize my electricity usage. You can also make a light reflector using some white guttering plastic. Not sure what they are called. Just an idea.

  • @michaelmccarthy4077
    @michaelmccarthy4077 3 месяца назад

    as a person who has repotted a lot of zygos, touch the roots as little as possible. I try not to touch them at all, I remove any loose media with water, the oils on my skin actually burn the velamen and the roots die. You may want to try to get that first one a bit deeper in the pot, the base of the new growth should be just below the top of the media.

    • @SpencerAloysius
      @SpencerAloysius 3 месяца назад

      I will probably have to take it out of the pot. Do you think it is worth touching the roots again to get it deeper in the pot?

    • @michaelmccarthy4077
      @michaelmccarthy4077 3 месяца назад

      @@SpencerAloysius just don't touch the roots when you do it. You can either pull it from the pot and take some moss away to get it lower in the pot or just press it in. IME, it doesn't matter if you compact the moss with them.

    I bought 10 last year and I'm still waiting for even one to bloom and four of them are definitely bloom size. I am dying to know if any of them will be the elusive yellow or orange. I don't see why you can't grow them outside in the summer, I have a bunch that grow outside all year and they don't have a problem with the heat or the rain. I will agree that moss is better than bark for growing them. I don't even change the moss when I repot because the roots are so fragile, you will lose more cleaning them off than just leaving the old moss.

    you say there is no money to be made on the history of orchids. This is not true. Now that orchidroots is down which was a free service guess how one has to check out orchid history? By paying for it. Orchidroots was free. Before this one had to become an AOS member and pay $55 a year in order to be able to check orchids history. No money to be made? I disagree. Who would stand to benefit? The AOS. If there is no more free orchidroots then the only way is to become an AOS member. Cha-ching.

    • @SpencerAloysius
      @SpencerAloysius 4 месяца назад

      I'm an AOS member but I don't think there would be anything wrong in supporting orchidroots monetarily. But given how poorly OrchidPro is coded (in some respects), I cannot see the AOS mounting a DDOS attack. The competency just isn't there.

    • @SpencerAloysius

    the light really should be sitting right on top of the terrarium. Light reduces fast the further it travels. Like exponentially. So picture a water sprinkler. Around the sprnkler the most wate will fall. Further way less will fall and at a certain distance plants will not receive any water at all. We cannot see this diminishing effect on light, our eyes aren't designed that way, yu need a light meter for that but essentially your light is so far away like with the sprinkler not a single drop of water will actually reach the plants the distance it is. You are just illuminating the room, the plants are receiiving minimal energy which will be far too little for optimal growth. Sometimes just moving a plant 10 cm closer to a light can mean the difference between it flowering or not. Top of the terrarium is perfect. I'd guess you are 80 cm's off.
