It was a scorching 40°C in the Big Desert today, but we made it to the dunes for some climbs spots where we've seen plenty of 4WDs struggle in the past. The BYD Shark 6 tackled them with surprising ease. Considering it's a stock-based vehicle with solid power on tap the results were impressive!

i am interested in seeing how you can utilise all the 240v for camping. Is there a fix to use the 240v when you are camping? especially with the Ecoflow Wave
@@cfwoo77 I’ve discovered if you use the cable supplied with the power board out of ev charger port (as it’s bidirectional) you can allow it to run with car off for 24hrs, just have to reset timer again next 24hrs and you could go till flat
It’s also a shame that manufacturers (and BYD has been bitten hard by this) give their pre-production vehicles to reviewers before getting them fully sorted. It would save a whole lot of grief and misery-information about the vehicle you actually end up with in your driveway.
In (slight) defence of Paul, he was driving a pre-production model and that issue, in particular, is now a non-issue. Plenty of videos out there now with the Shark taking much steeper, narlier grades than those - and it sails over them with no issues.
Hi mate, I tried the power generation mode by holding down the peddle and it starts and says it’s in power generation mode. But when I let my foot off it just stops again. Could you get it to stay on or do you have to sit in the car with your foot on the peddle?
Does the BYD shark have this?

How is the turning circle on that thing? I read it's 13m, my rodeo is supposed to be 11m and I find it pretty bad already lol what do you reckon?
the 12+L/100km is a bit of a turn off, but again, 90% of the time I use my car to go to work and do daycare/school pickups... That would be EV only I reckon... hmmm one day, I'll have the cash to get one :D

Great review. The 12l/100km is a little disappointing. With HT and small load I was hoping for better. My old R50 Pathfinder could do that on the highway...OK maybe 13's. 😊 Was your intent to minimise battery use to test ice economy?
Yes it was to simulate if say you drove this long distance with no EV charging. The whole point is you SHOULD as thats the whole point of PHEV's but we cant ignore that many will use it that way too - any time you can EV charge the ecnomy cost is going to become better, even to now I could charge every night on my 7kW charger but havent been - for the purpose of these videos. This will mean the economy expected can only be better when plugging in at a cost per distance theory.
Awesome Video.. Shark seems very capable... Monroe Live is doing a teardown of a shark.. They were looking at the frame.. and Sandy was shocked at the over built nature of the frame and and many other components. Be cool if we ever get it in the States..

1:08 no 12 volt power in the ute ?
So there is 12v in the centre console like normal cars, usb an and c but there is no high draw 12v. It looks like it’s a small LFP 12v battery under back seats, can’t see much about what max draw would be but it doesn’t look big. I don’t even know how a 12v winch would work. Many questions haven’t got to that part of the problem yet!
Did you try power crawl mode? You could go 45 degree up on that mode
@@ericlin1243 doesn’t exist, or I don’t know how to get to it.
@ it probably needs an OTA update. The option is new for even BYD cars sold in China. It is designed for serious rock climbing at very low speeds <2km/hr
Have you managed to do this on your Shark 6 yet?
Damn. 12L/100km is horrible for a 2025 car.... tho compared to a hill or modified landcruiser i'm not sure. I thought the sealion's 8L/100km was pretty shit compared to a Toyota hybrid's 5L/100km
BYDs generally heavier, so
@@tld8102 wait till the 1.6T towing results come in! 😳
You're off-road. If you look at the fuel consumption of other cars when off-road, Ford should exceed 20 liters and 25 liters. Hummer might be 30 or 40 liters.

33:55 Love the View
22:03 32:50 here we go !
Damn this car definelty more capable than my fortuner. Now all need is to lobby byd in my country to import their hybrid lineup instead only bev lineup only. Or worse I'll import it myself. Warranty will dammed.
@@silluete I used to own a 2022 Fortuner Crusade and this is years ahead of it tech wise and traction control off its head it’s speed and intervention is twice as good as the Fortuner more instant more usable, less rocking before traction kicks in. One of the worse things was rear diff lock on, no atrac at the front worst setup ever.
I not really use fortuner for off-road rock climbing. Mostly to reach worksite while mud slinging car behind me 😅. But man what i hate from my fortuner is the body roll really make my passanger purple from envy. If only this car not a company lease car I already modify it. Hell even my atto 3 have less body roll. But yeah either I upgrade to shark or tank hybrid if they ever release it.

You seem to be the first Australian RUclipsr to be providing consistent, authentic, content on the Shark, which I am sure many prospective buyers will appreciate, including myself. I am approaching having to replace my Hilux in maybe late 26, early 27, I am still sitting on the fence about the Shark, I feel it would help myself and others to hear about your 30,000km > experiences, both good and bad, but so far so good it seems.
Hey mate, loving my shark as well. What fuel are you using, 91 or 95?
I'm actually using 98. Why you may ask? Because thats what I've always done with newer vehicles. Some say it makes no differance others say it does, I've just made it a habbit and all my tests are based on that. There is a very good chance it makes little differance vs. extra $$$ at the bowser though, so its a personal preferance. What I dont understand is why Sealion 6 Premium which uses same 1.5L Turbo engine, is RON95 min but the Shark 6 with the same engine and turbo is RON91 min. I would be at least using RON95 for this reason. It would likley be a tune related thing however.
@AllTerrainActionEV thanks mate, I was told 91 is fine when I picked up the car but I think I'll switch to 95 going forward.
BYD has always supported 92-octane gasoline in China. You can check their octane number, which is always available with relatively cheap oil.
@ I understand this but Sealion 6 PHEV came here with ron95 min? Then shark 6 came with same engine and said ron91 min, so some contracting info. Maybe tunes are different. Still something to work out.
Next will be when people use it with Canopy/bullbar/Roof Rack/etc and their gear. See how it handles soft sand with more weight added. Very impressed. Thanks for the real world video. Now i just have to wait until mine shows up.
2:35 to summarize this video with one phrase...
@@goforitkesong 😂😂
40 degrees is not Brutal. Get out on the Nullarbor in summer, towing a load, headwinds and 45 plus temps. The Pilbara will test this vehicle in summer. So looking forward to a real test, loaded and tackling the likes of the Creb, Cape York, CSR, Gun Barrel, Sandy Blight junction rd ect. The Shark subjected to Dust, Corrugation, water over a long journey will show its strength and weakness.
@@KirkAnderson-l3i I agree definitely not a brutal test, but at least we know it can at least do this. Very familiar with Nullarbor in summer, used to do freight in a total sh1tbox with an underpowered truck with no A/C and having to run a heater to keep an overheating truck fighting crosswinds to and from the west. Eventually someone will subject the Shark to your mentioned conditions, but it all has to start somewhere!
After that , the moon?
Why not try the Everest, that’s what a proper Ute should do

Great video mate but all the phone holder and accessories holder on the windscreen 😳, do u still need them while still have those two big screens on the dash ?
@@gagandeepsingh9689 it was a little extreme in this video but we had to have ways to film from 2 positions and 1 phone was a phone while the other phone was used as a camera. Scanguage is a neasasary aux tool - you wouldn’t believe how much we filme and only used maybe 20% of all we took simply to make it short, informative and to a degree content that’s watchable.
@@AllTerrainActionEV Chris, is that a scan gauge 3? Did it just plug n play? I’m keen for something that can monitor engine revs and performance a bit more closely? Cheers
@ yes does all this and yes plug and play, I’m trying to get a discount code for the channel for those interested along with a video release of what sensors actually are accessible for viewing!
Was there sand under the rear seats like in the CarExpert video?
Ohh, I have not checked this. Sand shouldnt get in, but red dirt will - almost every car has this issue, I've travelled with people across Simpson Desert and every car, even new had red dirt sneak in somewhere. Sand vs Australia Red Dirt very differant things!
@@AllTerrainActionEV Yeah nah fair enough
Out of interest, how does that fuel usage compare to a diesel Ute? I don’t really follow utes closely so don’t really have a reference point for the 12.8l/100km amount - which seems relatively high in isolation.
In the situation, you will be aiming 15l/100km at least. This kind of hill climbing is very energy consuming.
I used to own a 2021 Toyota Fortuner and that used around 11L/100km with All Terrains. I think I had between 9.5-10.5L/100km with road tyres. Hard to say because as I added bullbar, winch, dual battery etc it started to get worse. In the end was anywhere from 11-12L/100km and that was around 2.7T touring weight. So weight wise vs. economy is feeling similar. The problem with the Shark is battery weight, it will always be at least 2.7T then add things ontop as you add weight, more power demand more electricity more fuel if not able to charge. I can see the Shark been 13-14L/100km easily with touring weight. I can see the Shark 16-19L/100km easily when towing over 2T of weight behind it at highway speeds. Its all relative, I didnt buy it for long tour trip fuel figures, I purchased it so that my day to day driving from home to my business/work etc could be from a electricity. My daily is normally under 70km travel, so that will be around $3-4 in electricity a day for my Mon-Fri driving around as opposed to $16-20 in Diesel a day, sometimes more as idle for A/C when waiting for next job.. or doing paperwork in the car. Shark idle with A/C is 1kW an hour.. hardly anything and effortless. Many pros and cons, but it all balances out probably. Diesels for along while will offer better reliability than EV's right now, but that will change over time I would say.
@@AllTerrainActionEV interesting - thanks for that. To be honest, the performance and ability to do most daily duties in EV mode more than makes up for it being slightly less efficient than a diesel when towing or off road.
@@AllTerrainActionEV They are pretty good figures from the Tuna. My 2018 Hilux started with 10.8L/100 stock and went up to 11.8L/100 with 265/70R17 mud terrains. The roobar and winch did not seem to affect it from what I could see. When I changed the tub to tray and alloy canopy it jumped to 14.5L/100 and stayed there. I think for how you use the Shark it will be great. Anyone living and commuting in a large city will benefit from this type of vehicle. I don't know if you have any plans of changing the tub for a tray and canopy set up but if you do, that may change the efficiency by a large margin as I found out.
I'm looking at purchasing the AWD Premium version Do you charge the Battery at home at all? Did the car come with a cable that can be plugged into a standard Australian Socket?
Yes comes with 8a wall charger, takes around 8-9hrs to charge from 25%.
Damn. That truck is fire. No cap.
In Australia we arent allowed to call these utes a 'truck' it would upset some people hahah!
impressed
Did you try different modes on same climb to see different results.
I feel there is no need, if its wheel living and mountain mode does it with ease, and sand dune coming in sand mode does it with ease, I dont see the need to try other modes (at least at the time) but we can if I remember can try differant modes to see what happens for you next time.
Damn the Shark goes well! I’d never go up terrain like that but nice to know it would own it if it needed to!
