First Splife Attempt | Splice Vlog
Tried my hand at the Teufelberger Splife for the first time on Tachyon. It's an attractive splicing method for two main reasons; it makes the splice more slender and pliable and, due to the core reduction, the finishing of the splice doesn't require the exceptional force of a class 1 style splice. I was very happy with the resulting splice in both Tachyon and the Yale XTC 24 sample that I did. The splice is super smooth and strong enough. Like any core diminishing splice, the eye produced is weaker than the MBS of the rope.
my break test results were:
Tachyon 1:
4642 lbs
Tachyon 2:
4721
XTC 24 head to head:
5554 lbs

TAZ LOV 3 Review
Просмотров 3,7 тыс.7 месяцев назад
I was always curious about the Taz when I first saw the original Taz years ago. I really only saw them in competition photos or in gear head photos talking about setting an access line and then ascending and setting a separate DDRT line to work off of. It looked like a really slick descender. Of course for a long time I had no excuse to throw the sticker price out for a rope access style descen...
My Top SRS Anchors
Просмотров 1 тыс.8 месяцев назад
Just wanted to share some of the anchors that I've found most useful this last year. I still love a short rope for removals and MRS, but when it comes to SRS and pruning, I have no trouble using a nice long rope. With the base anchor style I usually use I always have the perfect amount of rope. I've been using the Texas Tug more and more especially in lions tailed or otherwise poorly tapered el...
Making an Adjustable Cambium Saver
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.9 месяцев назад
I thought I'd make this quick video, not as a strict How To, but more to show a fun process of incorporating several splices into one project. Having an adjustable saver is not super important to me for double rope. Where I find it incredibly useful is when I'm creating a Cano-Base setup. ruclips.net/video/OxlIGLcF-0w/видео.html It can also be super useful if you're looking to make a cinching s...
Climb Double Rope Faster!
Просмотров 4,6 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Another long winded video on a pretty simple idea! When I'm double rope climbing, I always install my cambium saver by hand. I've almost never set cambium savers with a throwball from the ground, I find it tedious and frustrating. Ideally I'd always climb with a cambium saver. It's better for your rope and the tree. To avoid natural crotch climbing in the tree and setting a cambium saver from t...
CAMP Tree Access ST | Gear Review

I started climbing on the Camp Tree Access ST this winter when I moved and I was a little confused by it at first since it fit so much differently than my other TreeMotion saddles that I had used. I have grown to enjoy it a lot, the combination of the bridge and the standard rope access ventral attachment point offer so many positioning possibilities. I do prefer this style of attachment point ...

I got a really lovely surprise recently when Arbsession sent me their entire bag line. I got notice that I would be receiving a package, but I had no idea what it would be. I don't have any gear bags like these, I usually just use a duffle bag at work and I used a Patagonia Ascensionist for tree and rock rec climbing for the last six or so years. They feel so premium and I love how durable the ...

Best Arborist Rope For Winter | Samson SD Family

I was super excited to see promos for these ropes just recently and even more excited when Samson sent me some to test out. SD stands for SamsonDry (not SuperDry like I kept saying) which is their new proprietary dry treatment that is premiering on their V double braid rope family. As far as I know their isn't another manufacturer out there that offers an arborist climbing line with a dry treat...
Tree Climbing Spurs 101

Here's some of the tips that came to mind over the past month while I was thinking about this topic. There's plenty of nuance to climbing with spurs so I hope you can find these tips useful, but there's a lot more to learn. Here's some tips for buying spurs on a budget that I wanted to include. My personal Klein spurs are valued at about $340 and I would say the average price of a good spur is ...

Great video!
this video helped me alot. 1st person view allowed me to understand it clearly thank you
Awesome edit! I love stop motion and splicing. this was a treat. Can you explain or point me in the direction of someones explanation for or against having splices on two ends of a rope. I've been told not to because double braid shares strength between core at cover and the rope isn't able to sweat.
Thank you! People usually caution against it due to the cover sweating on a new rope. The way to go if you want two splices is to splice only one end and climb on it for a month, by then the cover will sweat about as far as it will in its lifetime and you can then splice the other side. If it’s a short section like a lanyard or a cambium saver you can easily sweat it by hand and remove the possibility of it sweating after being spliced.
You're a kick-ass teacher. I typically have a very short attention span for instruction, maybe a minute or two. But the way you explain is very thorough, clear, and I especially like the way you explain the reasons that you take each step that you take. The trades need more guys like you out there. You are appreciated sir
I’m humbled and I really appreciate it, very happy to help!
I am very interested in this device, so I would like some advice on whether it is suitable for climbing coconut trees or how to apply it.
What wire did you use to build your fid?
The fids I’ve made myself are made out of the piano wire you find at the hardware store for picture hanging I don’t know the gauge of the top of my head but best guess is it’s 16 or 18 gauge stainless wire.
Great knowledge to climb with
Good work like the idea of the climbing rope used as a choker I'm learning to climb didn't understand why the spurs were had all the movement by watching the video they were tightened around my calf I raised them higher like you explained in video work great now thanks
gonna ask this here as this is the only social media i have. When it comes to hitch cord like 8mm or 10 mm sirius by teufelberger, does the mbs test pull the hitch cord straight from one end to the other, or is the hitch cord doubled over and in a basket config? Fairly new to the rope side of tree climbing, and honestly, no one where i work would know this answer. Curious as i was wanting to make a lanyard with the 10mm sirius rope with a descender so that i can use it in an srs config. How would i go about finding out if the rope is safe to use in a srs config? would the mbs do? I apologize if this is a stupid question.
Usually if you see an eye to eye hitchcord the MBS in the stitching is tested in basket. When I did a quick google I found a mbs for the rope of 5395 which if you’re being by a stickler is 5 pounds short of the ANSI required 5400 lbs for life support lines. However I wouldn’t have any problem climbing on that. My only note about choosing this exact line is that it’s very pliable so it will flatten out a lot in a descender, a better choice would be Sterling HTP 10mm.
Your rock man, thank you for the video
I really don't understand this video. Double-braid ropes are a type of kernmantle rope. Where does this idea that double-braid ropes don't count as kernmantle come from? eg, it goes against Cordage Institute definitions.
absolute gem of a video. thank you
Why aren’t these good for tree trimming? Asking because I’m literally about to buy spurs to trim my palm trees
Spurs just damage the living part of the tree so it’s not an acceptable way to climb trees that you’re only trimming. However, a lot of people use spurs to trim palms because palms are very difficult to climb safely without them. It’s not ideal for the tree’s sake but a lot of people use spurs to trim palms
thank you, liked and subscribed
At my local shop they have this saddle only its camp gt ...has soft loop instead of D ring up front and red suspenders or fall arrest..very strange .has different front webbings near groing area..
thank you for sharing this information on ropes. you are awesome brother👌
Hello. I'm wondering if sometimes the splicing process can leave a stiff and slightly thicker diameter area of rope about 2 feet from the eye?. I have a brand new spliced eye marlow gecko 2 blue ocean 13mm rope and the "stiff" area is probably more like 14mm diameter and is about 25cm long. Very odd and can't find any information about it. Anyone have any idea?
Was it factory spliced? That definitely points to a very poorly calculated taper overlap. Not a safety issue usually just a poorly executed splice.
@treespicemedia Thank you for getting back to me. Yes it is factory spliced. I used it with a hitch climber set up yesterday as secondary to choke on to a thin bendy stem and it wouldn't pass through the VT so couldn't really get it to feel comfortable. Good test of balance though!. I have 11.7mm treehog rope (which is actually teufelberger drenaline according to the compliance certificate) as my main line so it's fine. It's just so odd it was sold like that it's very bloody noticeable!
ha ha i'm with stanwood - just finishhed an ac course and need to tend 5 hugh live oaks. est. bid cost 12000 -fck that - buying equipment and learning alot ( ps 65yrs old - ) like your video , nice job!
Thanks Jeffrey
"Speed...I am speed."
Just what I needed. Thanks!
Excellent video.
Would this device work well for working on a spar, or so so? Also, would it work on 11.7 mm ropes? The description online I have seen says 10 mm to 11 mm.
It’s great for spar work, unlike other descenders I’ve used you have to obey the recommended rope diameter it is impossible to fit anything over 11mm
I see you have a Makita top handle battery saw. Is that 18v X 2? Would you recommend it?
I have the super small one that just take 1 18v battery. I love it for trimming I rarely use it for large limb removal. It’s so light, I’d love more battery saws. I’d just highly recommend converting to 1/4 pitch chaun
Amazing video bro , thanks
I really like the look of the device I’m thinking of moving over to one from the rope wrench.
I really do love it, but I would caution against buying it if it’s your first mechanical. Unless you have a lot of experience with standard descenders.
WOW. I feel like I'm in the stone age at my line clearance tree company. Thank you for posting this stuff.
Is there a safety hazard if the plastic element wears off or something?
OUTSTANDING!
Yeah, it's the best system I have found.
2 years late, any chance you could expound on water based poly dipping splices? Are there parameters, downsides, concerns? Thank!
It does feel pretty concerning dipping your rope in a chemical, but I did break test many samples of polyester nylon and dyneema covered in water based poly and didn’t have any strength change. The goal is just to protect an exposed looser braided textile and it keeps it together very nicely. Only downside for me is that on the kernmaster splices it makes the eye incredibly firm like a hard plastic. When I’ve put it on exotic fibers like the core on beeline it absorbs less so the eye is still pretty pliable. Can’t say there’s any industry precedent, but it’s plenty good enough for me.
@@treespicemedia thanks for the info! that all tracks. Love the content dude!
Hello 👋 .. interesting video .. I like your honesty .. am in the process of buying a new harness .. I'm 5'8" .. 175 pounds .. 31 waist .. my current saddle is a (mgn date 1998) .. Weaver model 1036 .. Although it was used by me allot .. I've always taken care of it .. but it is +25 years old .. Am looking at the lighter version of this one .. the EVO .. I work in double rope not SRT .. what do U recommend 🤔🤨🧐👌
I like this harness a lot, but the balance is a little weird and the ventral connection point is going to be a bit of a waste if you like to double rope. For a very similar price I would probably recommend the Courant Koala. It has a better sit balance and quick buckles for the belt, which most people seem to prefer. I know a climber that has the Evo and only double ropes and he enjoys it, so neither is the wrong option.
Based on the size you give I would recommend the S-L camp saddle size.
@@treespicemedia .. ThanX for your insight .. will be looking into both models .. either one will be lighter than what I have now😅 .. Live working in the canopy .. TREE'S R awesome 👍
WOW, what and informative video. I was just planning to buy a bunch of climbing gear to keep all dead limbs and live unwanted limbs removed from many post oak, mulberry and black jack oak trees on my property that are not dead and not being removed. What a mistake buying spikes would have been. Thanks for saving me money and my tree thank you. Thank you for the video.
Why choose this over a rope wrench?
You can descend on a tensioned rope which eliminates almost all need for limb walking.
Definitely like being able to quickly remove and replace the line when base tied and repositioning.
There's two forms of MBS 8 to 8 and in a loop! 8 to 8 is always 1/2 and in a loop is full MBS.
Great Content 👍 for beginner MRT climbing. This is how I learned b4 moving into SRT but love it's simplicity
Great video!!
I was going to complement your video for how quiet the background sounds are and how this makes it so easy to fully concentrate on the content... then you inject that crap music and kill the whole mood...kids, they only half know what they're doing!
Very nice that you didn't make jump cut edits in the video which often result in missing small but important (at least for the beginner) tips and fixes or additional less obvious safety principles...essentially an unedited continuous climb; movement of anchor point; descent; retrieval. The tube style cambium safer seems so much easier to set than the ring style and a better choice for a beginner. Thanks.
Just learning this at 64. This video provides exactly what I needed most without a half hour of commentary on every single point. VERY well done! Thank you so much!
go for it Stan. 60 myself and cant believe i didnt follow this path many years ago. invested heavily and loving it
Enjoyed the video. Nice camera positioning. I'm a Petzl ZigZag guy. So many advantages with the ZigZag. I do use a RRP if I may have to reposition in the tree - which is rare (Too old for intricate limb walking). Thanks for posting.
This device removes the need for limb walking because it gives you the ability to descend on a tensioned line. Throw your tail over the desired branch, have the ground lock it off, and descend to the desired location. This thing is way better than the zig zag. I've had both.
Best tutorial I've seen! Thanks!
I attach the axis point of the handle end to my chest harness. This makes the device more grabby with smaller diameter ropes. it generally make sit more grabby, I use it for solo rock climbing as well as tree work and rope access. I'm a huge fan of it. For lead solo, you need to add a pulley to the top of your system to make paying out slack sensible. I learn a lot from your videos, thank you for your time.
I've only used the petzel rig, it's always lovely to learn new devices thank you for the great content as always!
Thanks for the info, very helpful .
Why dont or cant a person use kernmantle rope for natural crotch clombing or rigging?😮???? If core is protected isnt that better than 16 strand
They most likely left that tree for landmark..doesent look hard to fell..atcall......
I have this clip in my old harness and I can't remove the bloody thing lol
After almost three decades of climbing the Edelrid Tree Rex harness with their suspenders that have a bungee cord attached at the bottom for a knee ascender is the best and most comfortable saddle ever made. It’s fairly lightweight while still being very durable. It has everything you need to start doing production climbing out of the box. Their talon climbers are also the most comfortable than anything else by a mile! I love Monkeybeaver saddles, tree motion saddles and Courant’s Koala saddle, but the Edelrid gear is just so good and so well designed it’s just impossible to beat in my experience at least. Great video as usual!
Can you give any tips/input on making the Edelrid suspenders more comfortable? I find my neck having issues from the suspenders digging into and straining my neck. I’m sure I just need to dial in my system better to alleviate this issue. What knee ascender and system do you use for climbing? I use the notch fusion rope wrench with a DMM swivel which was a huge help. My knee ascender is self made from a camp chest ascender attached to a foot webbing loop. Attached to the bungee on the suspenders. Also I just attach a chest loop on the suspenders with two mini carabiners to the stif tether part of the fusion rope wrench. I’ve already broken one of those loops so I know this is an area I need to find a better solution.
