If you have five minutes to learn five tips at a time about writing and publishing your writing (book(s), blog, magazine pieces, corporate writing), this is the channel for you. Writers come in all shapes, sizes, genres and media. But one thing is common to all of them―the fundamental need to understand how to execute the actual process of writing. But that's not all there is to writing for most writers. Writing is a solitary act, but most writers want to share their writing with the world. So, writers also need tips on publishing. Traditional book publishing, self-publishing, magazine publishing, blog publishing and the list goes on. I won't leave these important topics out!

Mrs Parsons, forgive me for making a suggestion, but i think it would be helpful for book sales if you put link to your latest book in the description :) I learned that from other youtubers. I will be going on amazon to look for your book :)
Great idea. Which book?
@PatriciaJParsons the one year to author. I already ordered from Amazon, I think it's from your page as well. It's coming on Saturday Love your videos. You are an informative, detailed, amazing teacher. Thank you for all the content. Big fan
ah hah, thank you for bringing clarification. For a nonfiction author (me) who has two books out and one on the way, this is something I should know. Yet, this is the first I heard of "prescriptive" nonfiction. It is exactly what my second book is and now that I know, I'm better armed to talk about it. It is a resource guide book in how, why, and where to volunteer in which I had self-published during the Covid lock-down. Thinking back, my readership was my then blog audience--or who I wrote my blog for, not that I had many blog followers as I didn't. And I chuckled when you said "seat of your pants" but, really, this is serious stuff, eh. There seems to be so many subgenres of nonfiction, with each of my three books being in three different niches. Like in the last video and as always, there's always something for me to learn from you, thx!
I'm happy that the discussion about the different types of nonfiction helped. I think it's important to consider these elements to make your work the best it can be - to reach the right audience, especially in the area of prescriptive nonfiction, where you're trying to impart knowledge or teach something. Happy writing!
Thank you for binging to light some important aspects of writing "prescriptive" non-fiction. It is good to be aware of these as they can be helpful to keep in mind when writing "non-prescriptive" literary non-fiction. It would be helpful to keep in mind: Five tips: Know your audience. Who they are. Content logically. Clear, actionable simple steps. Use real life examples. An anecdote. Use an encouraging and supporting voice. Thank you.
So true. As the last video presented, creative or narrative nonfiction - which you refer to as literary - is a different thing altogether. Happy writing!
Thank you, Patricia! 😊
God, yes-I’m a Brazilian fiction writer. I’m also a medical doctor who only rediscovered my passion for writing theory after finishing med school and achieving financial stability. But after three months of frustrating experiences in online writing groups, I felt compelled to write about the dangers of these spaces-only to realize others must have already explored this topic. That’s what brought me here. Thank you for your previous insights.
Love your definition!
A writing group can be very beneficial if you have the right people but it's almost impossible to find the right people. I've been trying out a poetry writing group. Most folks in the group do not even read poetry on a regular basis.
I just finished my first draft and my first try writing anything actually. I wondering how crazy is to crazy when writing fiction. I put a section of the ending and post it on Facebook to just one woman I'm trying to get the attention of. She cried and all that and that was the reati started, but didn't know that until later. Also i took first draft and sent it to chat gpt to get a opinion. What do you think of that? Bad idea. I'm dyslexic and use chat gpt to fix errors also. It says I'm not just writing , but trying to understand the nature human will. It's about will and it's horrific in parts. How horrific is to horrific in science fiction horror. Its actually a dream, but it's a long dream , like most of it is a dream. At the end it becomes real in a way . I've came up with the ultimate betrayal and it's never been touched on. I've looked hard to see if this particular betrayal has been written about and I don't think it has. Anyways great advice and good bless the AI for fixing grammar lol. I just have crazy ideas with no experience. I'm a math person. Well not anymore!
Hand writing a book needs to be in perfect penmanship and tons of information in one notebook as only a hobby which i am good at doing
Direct, concise, relevant AND encouraging. Thanks!
Your videos have helped this young writer. They are concise and to the point.
Thanks for the clear explanations, helpful!
Thank you for shedding a new light on the otherwise mundane concept of "conflict". Now we know it is more than just a mere "conflict". We can do much more with it in our writing. This gives writers a wider field to tell their stories. Thank you for this helpful writing advice.
Helpful tips, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
❤ I just love your videos. Thanks so much!
Can you make a video with some examples of the most common words people spell wrong that are combinations of two words, like nightfall, or breadcrumb?
I've made a note. 🙂 This is an interesting topic because many of the compound words we use today are newly acceptable, so it is a good topic to pursue. ~ P.
@@PatriciaJParsons I'm a Swedish writer of fiction in English, so I'm constantly discovering errors I've made through my books that weren't discovered by automatic spelling correction. This is especially true of compound words, prepositions and beginning words with the wrong case letter. Writing God/god is a good example.
Thank you for highlighting that there is a “slippery slide into illiteracy” these days…It’s disappointing to see educated professionals write reports that say, for example, “Your daughter’s presence is apart of the safety plan”. I’ve also had polite arguments with elementary school teachers who insisted they were correct in teaching my children that “cannot” is written as two words, “can not"! Thank you for your writing tips. 🌺
Oh, my goodness. The day is coming when we won't be able to understand one another at all if we don't follow a few rules! Happy writing! P.
Thanks, Patricia. I can easily see how dialogue tags might annoy an editor. From the action in a scene a reader should be able to determine both who is speaking and the likely tone of the speaker.
Yes, and "said" fades into the background. 😀
i hire someone to put the commas where they go
A good ending doesn't need a glass of wine. Cheers 😊
Thank you for putting in proper perspective the place of proper ending in a piece of writing. I have jotted down your five tips to keep them handy on my desk as a reminder. 1) Tie up loose ends. 2) Stay true to theme. 3) Evoke reader's emotion. 4) Leave room for reader to reflect. 5) Avoid rushed conclusions. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, wisdom, and expertise. Kind regards. S. Zafar Iqbal
Thank you, this is in perfect timing for me to heed and wow, quite a lot of punch in this five minutes. I think what you say about emotion is good to think about, good for me to pay attention to (and a question for my beta readers to see if we're on the same page is this regard.)
I agree wholeheartedly with all five. Hear, hear.
As always, thanks for your tips.
You are so welcome! P.
Not my wheelhouse, but another great video! 😊
Thank you for revealing the fascinating world of writing and publishing children's books --- a field with its own interesting challenges --- the challenges that are beautifully eclipsed by the wonderful, charming aura of by these books. Your presentation is short, right to the point, and substantive. It is full of useful information about this aspect of book publishing that is not generally known or understood by ordinary readers like me. Thank you again for sharing your wisdom and knowledge. With best wishes and kind regards. S. Zafar Iqbal
Wow. These are some really great videos. The knowledge is very helpful ❤
I didn't understand copyrite until today. Thank you. I'm sure you've influenced countless students who've become extremely successful.
Thank you so much! My WIP is a historical biography. Is it okay to include any older newspaper stories (from the 1950s or even dating back to 1912)? I’ve done so in a few places in my manuscript, but always with a few words beforehand to credit the writer and newspaper. And in one place I have an excerpt of words written by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt as it appeared in a 1950 newspaper story, again crediting her and the newspaper. These are also listed in my biblio. Am I okay? From what I know of your writing credentials, I trust your input.
Are you planning to include the entire news story? In general, it would probably be best to include only a quote (for narrative purposes quite apart from the copyright issue), and yes, that's okay if you cite the source.
My first book does have a common title (Out of Chaos) - when I was a new author then, my thinking was not only is it the perfect title, but people might discover it (who otherwise wouldn’t) if only b/c they are searching for another book, same name (FYI-my author name is different from my user name, here.) Yes, I registered that copywrite. I chose not to register with my second book and am yet indecisive with my upcoming book. Perhaps it was a moment of glory for me to register that first one-its certificate is framed and displayed in my home.
I can understand why you want to keep the certificate, but registering your copyright isn't necessary. I can also understand your thinking about people finding your book when searching for other books with the same title. Unfortunately, it doesn't really work that way. That's not how books become discoverable, as you have probably learned! Good luck with the writing! ~ P.
All these are vital elements of writing good, readable prose, that holds readers' interest and their attention. Thank you for presenting them in a formal and easy to understand way. Now we know what these essential elements of good writing are and how to use them. Thank you for sharing it in such an interesting way. With best wishes.
I'm delighted that they appeared in an accessible way! Happy writing. ~ P.
I watched. I listened. I learned. 😊
Happy to hear that! ~ P.
Thanks for the tips. Very useful
You are welcome! Happy writing! ~ P.
#5 was my favorite. I'm a natural at #1-4, but lousy at ending chapters in a way that makes the reader want to turn the page and continue reading.
Stay tuned. Episode 111 (to come) is on writing better endings. Happy writing! ~ P.
Thank you Prof. 👍
Thank you. Tip 5 is the best.
Very helpful thank you for the guidance!
Enjoy everything you do. 😊
Thanks! Hope your writing is going well! P.
Thank you for clarifying how to use ellipses ... correctly.
Happy to help a fellow writer! P.
I wasn't aware that ellipsis needed a space before and after. Thanks.
Neither was I until I did the research. I've been doing it wrong for years - and editors at major publishers have been letting me get away with it! P.
Thank you for another informative post - I had two different grammar check programs give me two different answers concerning ending a sentence with ellipses. One said use a period, the other said not. I trust your knowledge, and so will spend my time editing my draft making sure all my ... have a . if they need one. lol
You are so right about differences of opinion regarding final punctuation after ellipses. The period looks so odd, but my research suggests that it's the correct way. Happy writing! P.
You have been so helpful as I muddle my way through my writing! Thank you!

Excellent advice. 😊
What is your opinion on content warnings in the query?-Some say do it, others say don't.
I suppose my almost forty years in the writing business give me a specific perspective. I think content warnings in query letters are completely unnecessary and inappropriate. In fact, if I were an editor or an agent and writers put these in queries, I'd peg them as amateurs who've learned their business from another wannabe writer in a Facebook group. I'm not much of a believer in warnings on finished books, either. The book's blurb should be sufficient for any potential reader to determine if it's the kind of book they'd want to read. I'd appreciate warnings that say things like "Warning: This book contains multiple stylistic and punctuation errors." Hope that helps! P.
@@PatriciaJParsons Thanks so much for your reply. I am so relieved, since I couldn't agree more. To me, it smacks of a "flavor of the month" scenario. The "latest thing"...so everybody wants to have you jump on their band wagon...
Looking forward to new writing errors, grammatical errors. For once i appreciate youtube suggesting old videos. :)
