I didn't understand copyrite until today. Thank you. I'm sure you've influenced countless students who've become extremely successful.

Thank you so much! My WIP is a historical biography. Is it okay to include any older newspaper stories (from the 1950s or even dating back to 1912)? I’ve done so in a few places in my manuscript, but always with a few words beforehand to credit the writer and newspaper. And in one place I have an excerpt of words written by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt as it appeared in a 1950 newspaper story, again crediting her and the newspaper. These are also listed in my biblio. Am I okay? From what I know of your writing credentials, I trust your input.

Are you planning to include the entire news story? In general, it would probably be best to include only a quote (for narrative purposes quite apart from the copyright issue), and yes, that's okay if you cite the source.

My first book does have a common title (Out of Chaos) - when I was a new author then, my thinking was not only is it the perfect title, but people might discover it (who otherwise wouldn’t) if only b/c they are searching for another book, same name (FYI-my author name is different from my user name, here.) Yes, I registered that copywrite. I chose not to register with my second book and am yet indecisive with my upcoming book. Perhaps it was a moment of glory for me to register that first one-its certificate is framed and displayed in my home.

I can understand why you want to keep the certificate, but registering your copyright isn't necessary. I can also understand your thinking about people finding your book when searching for other books with the same title. Unfortunately, it doesn't really work that way. That's not how books become discoverable, as you have probably learned! Good luck with the writing! ~ P.
