    Hey, Andrew. Thanks for sharing! Can a wheel chair reach the rocks?

    • @AndrewPOlson
      @AndrewPOlson Месяц назад

      I suppose it might be possible to reach the rocks with a wheel chair but I'm not going to recommend it. There are a few rocky sections along the main trail that would not be easy for a wheel chair to pass and getting down to the rocks would be the most dangerous part of the journey. I mean no disrespect but if someone where to attempt to take a wheel chair down to the hexagonal rocks, there is plenty of risk; the trail/stairs down is steep and narrow; there is plenty of loose rock that would be very dangerous for someone in a wheel chair to attempt to traverse without fall over the edge to the drop-off. Having several other hikers/friends would be recommended in order navigate that area safely. I'm in no position to tell anyone what to do, however, I don't want anyone to get stuck or get hurt out there, either.

    • @AndrewPOlson
      @AndrewPOlson 5 месяцев назад

      Great question! There was no light socket in the glass bulb so I'm going to say. no. However, I know there are lamps that are designed to have a nightlight just as you described. The lamp could be re-wired with a light socket in the glass, that's certainly possible.

    The warranty issue matters, as so many such heating tools fail early on - save yours, and invest only just before embarking on a serious soldering project. I used a large Weller gun on replacing a multi-position dial switch with around 24 tightly spaced contacts, in a veterinary X-Ray control unit that had to handle higher voltages; instant heat and light was a huge benefit. Still, the gun was a deductible business expense, saving hundreds over professional servicing time, and its short life span when used over a very few more projects was still worth it. As to digital versus a dial (rheostat), it is likely more reliable without generating internal heat; again, it will either work or die. Interesting to know how accurate the thermal indicator really is, as it may be regulating by just on/off frequency, measuring nothing.

  • @scott29kelly
    @scott29kelly 7 месяцев назад

    Forgive me if this was already answered somewhere, but can you give me a ballpark estimate of cost to do this project as cheaply as possible? In other words, if I use smaller, cheaper quality metal pipe and don't add the glass jug part, what kind of cost should I expect? I'm trying to do a project like this for a group of teenagers at my church's youth group but not sure what our budget would be per person.

    • @AndrewPOlson
      @AndrewPOlson 7 месяцев назад

      Um... I hesitate to give a ballpark estimate simply do to the fact that there are so many variables for parts; where to purchase them, size, quality, buying in bulk vs not, buying from a supply house vs a big box store. I also don't know what/how far you are willing to compromise on parts. -Buying in bulk will save $ per piece, if your needs justify buying in bulk. Buying from a supply house it is cheaper than a big box store but watch out for shipping costs eating away at your savings. -Don't quote me on this but I would say, if you do your research, you could probably build a version (out of 1/2" black iron pipe) for roughly $100+. -That estimate does not include the cost of tools. Just a suggestion, go to a plumbing supply website and pick out all the pieces you need and then tally up the price. Then find the remaining items, switches, wire, etc (from whichever place you want to purchase those) and do the same, that way you'll have a good idea of cost-per-lamp before you make a purchase. I hope this helps.
