OK a departure from my normal trials vids. It's winter here and this is how I entertain myself during the cold months. The guitar is a PRS CE24 "-08" . I'm running into a Helix LT as my audio interface, and using Helix native for amps, effects, whatever else. Reaper is my DAW of choice, and Resolve was used for video editing. Not super skilled, but I hope anyone listening enjoys this anyway.

How to get the rear tire up and over a log when the ground is higher the back side of the log and the bike is sitting about level. This isn't easy and when it is damp and slick it is even harder. Here's what works for me.

Nice trial bike
@@prazchannel7131 thanks 🙂. How about the one on your channel? Would you mind replying and sharing a bit about it, and do you still ride it? The frame looks like it came from or was inspired by a GaGas? I see the engine says Kawasaki, but I dont reconize its design. The brakes look really nice, and the gold finish on the forks adds a nice look.
Welcome back!
@@twowheelgeriatric thanks! ! !
How much did the bike cost
@@Ruckusracing-777 trials bike pricing is close to dirtbike pricing, 8-11k USD new. But you can find a 3 year old bike for around 5-6k USD normally. Compared to when I owned my KTM 300, yearly maintance cost is way cheaper on a trials bike. Bike parts and riding gear typically wears a lot slower.
@@shawnmcginnis2508 thanks
Вау! cool Hello from Russia
Nice music, bro! You are cool, realy!
Bailed on my 2020 vertical 300 and landed on the clutch line going into the basket area so I am replacing the whole cover as the thread got screwed, anyway this video has helped give me confidence to do the work myself. Thanks shawn!
Awesome, glad it helped someone out ! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! 🙂 Hopefully the project goes well, sorry to hear about the crash though!
Did you ever remove the gear plate to be able to change kickstart gears?
I did change the gears, yes. I attempted to film the process, but it didn't turn out well, the filming, not the repair lol. Getting to the gears was covered in this video. As far as replacing the kickstart gear and idler gear, it isn't difficult, but the way the system is it prevents you from testing your work without reinstalling the clutch cover first. That got me confused and I thought I had done something wrong. Turned out you just can't test it like you could a Scorpa kickstart. If you are working on the project and have any questions, you can send me a message on FB and I may be able to help. facebook.com/shawn.mcginnis.52?mibextid=ZbWKwL It's been a while, and my memory is a bit foggy, but if I can help, I will. I am soon going on vacation and may be without cell service for a few days.
If anyone doesn't know about this riding, the key is balance and not to put your feet down or it's a ding against you. The person with the lowest score wins lol like golf.
Hey Shawn , good video any idea what your sag setting is I have a 22 nitro and it seems a little soft I have two and a half inch or sag
So it may be a bit different with the Nitro having more travel than my R2. I am running about 2 inches front and rear. This spring I stepped up a spring rate each end. I am a bit over 200# so it was needed. My guess is that with the extra travel, 2.25- 2.5" sounds like a decent number. Depending on your weight, you may consider heavier springs as well. It was a nice improvement for me.
Thanks for getting back, I'm about 170 all geared up, it's hard to find any information on where it should be
I have not adjusted anything on the suspension yet, but has just started to feel like I am bottoming out on some bigger stuff
@JMTZ 170 is in the stock range. Ryan Young say any 3 foot drop or so and you should expect to bottom. Your bike does have a compression adjuster on the side of the shock. It's the purple dial. You can use a 5 mm (if memory is correct) ball-end allen wrench to adjust it. Turn it to the right 3 or 4 clicks. See how that feels.
Nice! :)
Thanks. Not nearly as easy as they make it look on TV, but having a lot of fun trying!
I had no idea about the way the case splits! I think that's some awesome innovative engineering! Another reason to love my vertigo even more!
Yeah I am still super impressed with them. So much so we ended up getting a matching R2 250 for my wife. Only thing I really don't like is the gasgas inspired kickstart mechanism, and the need for special tools for basic maintenance. Being a machinist I made my own so no worries, but could be annoying for some people. I have updated my bike to the R3 airbox cover, R3 footpeg hangers, and S3 hardrock pegs. Around close to 200hrs my Vertigo pegs started to sag. The R3 hangers are a bit lower and tilted forward slightly. R3 ecu update will happen when I get to a dealer somewhere sometime.
Jumped into my feed today. I hear a whoop at the end 😜. Yes, this was a good one 👊
I’ve really been enjoying this 105!
Yeah boi!!!!! 👊
Hey this was a quick vid (originally private) for Tom so I didn't do any VO as him and I discussed everything over the phone. Basically the intent was to experiment with going back and forward, vs more of a simple hop up. The results sorta speak for themselves, but basically what I found was big back to forward body movement lead to increased forward momentum. Ore straight up and down hop allowed me to trade whole bike momentum for more rear tire focused momentum. So basically hoping up and then rotating the bike aro7nd the pegs to get the rear tire to hit while the front was higher (angled wise) and didn't move as far forward. I also included a stuff/static zap done on a super tiny log to show you don't need a big log to practice the technique. It does change the dynamics a bit on a twig that small vs an actual log. Hopefully though it shows the technique can be done on much smaller log then some think and it will encourage people to give it a try knowing it can be done sorta risk free. Biggest risk is looping out I think especially on the smaller logs as there isn't much to impact and throw the front down on. Be sure to be good at covering the rear brake before you try this.
What is top speed on these types of bikes? Looks fun, but difficult. Salut!
@@bongdonkey probably somewhere around 50ish mph, maybe a bit more. First 3-4 gears (depending on brand) are very low and slow for use in the sections. Then there is one trail gear and one road gear. It's tons of fun, but very challenging. I gave up my KTM 300 for this sport. Never though I would, but trials is where it's at for me and my wife! 🙂.
Brilliant 👍
Great work. 👊 Love seeing the slow mo shots and also the progression. I usually keep in the clip when I yelp for joy also n 🤣

#3 🙋. Your riding is looking great bro 👌
Very impressive 👍
Number 2 for me, not so much the zap but the blip from one log to the next if that makes sense
Just to add to this, an in depth video/explanation of how to keep your front end up high at the balance point when going from the first to second log
Leave a comment and let me know if any of these things are something you'd like me to do a more in depth video on. Simply just comment 1, 2, or 3.
Brilliant 👍 on the ground as it is , work that we all might all have to do 👍
Thanks Richard! Yeah I sure wish I had a nice garage, with a fancy cement floor. Instead I have a small wooden shed that no matter how many times I've swept still seems to magically spawn sand lol. Glad you enjoyed it and hopefully it helps somebody else when it comes time for them to get in there. I will try to video thel replacement of the worn parts when they come in.
@@shawnmcginnis2508 yes please on the rebuild 👍
That looks really nice. I’m just wondering how you cover the rear brake without accidentally applying it as you jump up?
Thanks for the comment and question. So the answer is "very carefully" 🤣! Honestly I just do, and I realize that is an absolutey horrible answer. I do plan to make a more in depth video on this. Tom (Trials Progression) has been on me for a while now about putting something out. I've held off as there are some good videos already like the ones done by Jitsie's Jan Peter's or Pat Smage. I want to make sure there is some sort of value to any "instructional" video I put out and that it is truly helpful and doesn't steer people in a bad direction technique wise. So all this to say sorry I don't have a good answer for you right now, but I will be sure to pay special attention to your question when I put a video together and make sure I either talk about it, or get a close up camera view of what's going on with the rear brake. Sorry I don't have a better answer right now. I can say when stuffing into the obstacle I use both brakes on impact and allow my weight to transfer forward to absorb the shock and not rebound off the log. After I'm settled I transition to holding the bike in place with the front brake and clutch. As I lean back my foot rocks back on the peg and off the brake. From there everything happens fast and I just do it without thought. Be careful if you practice this as it is very easy to loop out and especially if on a log there is only a split second to decide if you need to keep the power on and weight back to get traction and up a little higher to crest the log, or if you need to immediately hit the rear brake to bring the front back down a little.
@@shawnmcginnis2508 Thanks Shawn that is actually a very good answer. I find that I often accidentally hit the brake if I try to cover it at the start of any manoeuvre . But as you point out it all happens very quickly so it’s not easy to diagnose. May I ask what boots you and Tom use / recommend? Mine are trials boots but very firm-robust and not much feel.
Yeah no problem. So I've been using Forma Boulder boots. The Alpinestar trials boot seems very popular in my club. Not sure off hand what boot Tom uses. I actually went my first 2 years wearing SG12 motocross boots due to a shattered tib/fib. Took me a while to build up the muscles to be able to take the impacts without all the extra support. Yeah occasionally I'll have an errant rear brake hit. Always comes as a surprise lol. I am guilty of covering my rear brake too often. It is still set in the factory position, but I really should try adjusting it just a bit lower. Seems I'm always so excited to go out and ride I just forget about doing.
I went out for some practice last night. Mostly focused on my wife, but I did run a few static zaps myself. I found I was moving my foot out on the peg a bit and rotating the tip of my toe away from the brake so my foot could rock forward. I am still quite a novice on this technique so I end up lifting my feet off the pegs a little too much when I jump. As I set my foot back onto the pegs I land with my toe on the brake, not applying the brake, but just making contact and ready to go if needed. Watching Pat's video on stuffs @ about 2 : 15 he brings his foot back so he can get great spring with his ankles, lifts his foot only slightly off the pegs, lands weight back so toe rocks up some, and then finds the brake. Or something like that. Have a watch and see what you think. Hope this helps some 🙂
Cool, I think i need to work on my technique as I have the same boulder boots . By chance Toms latest shorts video show a rider going vertical up a concrete wall, it clearly shows what you just described about foot movements. 👍 Pat Smage videos are awesome too !
I like these kind of presentations of the techniques so much! ✌️
Thanks. Hope you found it helpful!
Point of clarification. Being on the bashplate like this puts a lot of weight on the plate, but not rear tire. When on a log and the bike is angled down somewhat gravity helps to put pressure on the rear tire allowing for some traction. In this case there is no pressure holding the tire to the log and therefore no traction. That is why the push forward is so important to move the tire into the log and once on the log the quick shift back in weight to help the tire hook up.
another great video - it's the little things that help so much
Thanks 😊. Not really qualified to teach anything major, but hoping the little things like this can help a few of the intermediate guys out. Once my ribs heal up I'm planning to do a part 2 on bashplate techniques 🙂
Oh btw thanks for leaving a comment ! 🙂
This is awesome Shawn. This is where I usually put a foot down, but such a helpful skill to have in the tool bag. Thanks for breaking this down. Viewer request when you get time on breaking down that money looking stuff to static zap at 0:19 😉 or next time we are together 👊
Shawn, this is a great video! 👊 The voice overs and video pauses and edits are really adding a ton of value. Nice work and I need to practice these. Especially the controlled rock over after my crash when front landed right into next log. 🤣
Great video Shawn!

Any chance of close ups of the clutch and throttle timing please?
Hey Dave. It is currently getting dark before I get home from work and I'm also dealing with some unexpected medical issues that came up.. That said I will do what I can as I get a chance 🙂. The main thing to consider is we want to do this exercise on the clutch and using stored flywheel energy. So you'll start by having the throttle already dialed up to where or about where you want then you'll release the clutch. So at first as you are learning this idea you can crank up the RPMs well before the obstacle and just hold them steady until you release the clutch. Once you release the clutch the idea is to be able to back off the throttle and let the smooth flywheel energy carry you. Hope this makes sense.
@@shawnmcginnis2508 Perfect sense Sir. Thank you. Get well soon buddy.
@@davekelly7184 Thanks I hope to , but we'll see what the Dr says Monday. Be sure to start with the Rpm low and build up. Also covering the rear brake is always recommended. Best of luck !

Congrats in conquering the wall. It can be done with the roll up (like you did), also with a double blip and a Splat. I recommend anyone who wants to master this types of obstacles to practice this 3 techniques with the same obstacle. The double blip takes longer but pays in the long run. Oh, also, it should be practice in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. That way you will have multiple ways to overcome the obstacle. Happy braaaap! ;)
Thanks Adrian! 100% agree with with your comment. I started out first doing this wall with a splat and kicker. Now working on the roll up. Getting up consistently now, but trying to really dial the technique. Next will be the zap. Eventually no kicker splatter and static zap. Same thing as well on using 1st,2nd,and 3rd. All will do it, but each provides a different experience and have particular moments when needed! Thanks for the great comment!
