That sounds suspiciously like the ignition switch. At the very least disassemble, clean, and reassemble your ignition switch and it'll probly clear up those intermittent electrical issues.

Sounds like the problem I was having. You may wanna inspect your ignition switch.

Flyin' Miata has a good recent video about their fuel pump relay upgrade kit (link below) and he says the same. If you're 100% stock then replacing with the B5B4 is "an affordable option". If you've got an upgraded ignition system, fuel pump, or even more components on the interior like aftermarket gauges, screens, amps, etc. the incremental cost for the 80A relay is recommended by them. Come to think of it for the fuel pump, FM recommends their DW100 165LHP for the stock replacement, which may benefit from an upgraded main relay. Thx for the comment! You've got a real keen eye! Last year I ran new battery and ground cables to replace the old skinny factory stuff (timed vid link below). The clear plastic thing is a battery post distribution block from Amazon with screw terminals on both positive and negative terminals. On the neg post I have that quick battery disconnect to kill power to the car, which is what I was doing in this video. Mine is 1990 so the wiring might be a bit simpler than yours. And the black canister to the right of the battery is the EVAP canister (vents fuel tank vapours) that I relocated from the engine bay to the trunk to clear space for the power steering reservoir. Pretty sure I used the longer one into the chassis. I think the short ones are for the sub belt to seat bracket mount, which I didn't use (floor mounted). Hope that helps!

Have you taken a look at the wiring to the switch and where it goes? It ahould be pretty evident comparing the non-stock wiring to the factory wiring diagram what the PO did.

Evidently, European spec 90-93 MX-5s came with this feature. But Im unclear if you hold the flash if the brights stay on or turn off after 3 seconds.

most NA miatas do not have bright enough lights for this to be a problem lol

What year is your Japanese spec Roadster? Do the headlight stay up for more than 3 secs if you hold the stalk in the back position?

According to the miata.net garage page on this OG mod (link in description) if 94+ American spec models replace the whole combination switch, left stalk, you can do this mod. Of course you will need to source one from a 90-93 parts car. I haven't researched it, it might be plug and play or it might require repinning the connector(s).

The Miata community's still waiting on this milestone 😉
