    Unfortunately this video isn't the install of the motor into the Miata, sorry. We're getting there but this unloved junky engine insists on teaching me new skills and testing my resolve. What's the worst unintended job you've had to do?

      I have a 90 Miata and wanted an easy weekend project of cleaning up and painting my valve cover. After taking the valve cover off I noticed a decent amount of oil leaking around my timing belt and the front of the engine. Turns out my camshaft and crankshaft seals were bad and leaking oil, so my quick weekend project turned into replacing those seals, the timing belt with all new timing covers, accessory belts, the water pump, and an entire coolant hose kit.
      Safe to say it wasn't a weekend project after all that.

      @@Afterthought90Ouff! Good on you for noticing and getting it done! Talk about escalating

      Once I started out doing a steering shaft update on an old El Camino we inherited to tighten up the loose steering. I came down with a case of ¨while I´m in there¨ and long story short, the car ended up with a complete suspension, brakes, wheels and tires all around. The worst part was the suspension bushing replacement. I should have just bought a cheap shop press.

    This build series is so entertaining. I have to say, I do fear for that engine. Everything is soooooo DARK, you can tell that oil wasn't changed often lol.

    I will be building an Ecotech engine to replace mine due to excessive oil consumption. I will use your links. You do a great job. Camera angles, clarity, editing, and sound are all on Point! I subbed. I expect this channel to blow up if you keep doing what you're doing.

      Great to hear! These are kind of underrated engines and the experts like the ZZP guys say when built can be extremely stout and take a ton of boost.

    Excellent video! It seems like you’re following closely behind in my footsteps. I’m doing an ecotec swap on my Miata as well. I just finished up the timing and balance shaft chain install a few weeks ago. I had almost the same timing woes as you but it was for a different reason, causing me to tear it all down and start over again. Its frustrating, but fingers crossed I hope this swap will be worth the struggle

      That's a relief, I'm not the only one that struggled! I'd love to chat further, could you email me at mostlyuselessgarage@gmail.com to compare notes on our swaps?

    At least this double timing chain job was with the engine out of the car! All those colored links and timing arrows look like a puzzle.

    Do you need to remove the vvt phasers to replace the timing chain? I don’t want to mess with them but I might have to

    • @mostlyuselessgarage
      @mostlyuselessgarage  3 месяца назад

      Every guide and tutorial I've seen takes them off, presumably to allow clearance to remove the chain. Why not remove them?

    I'm not gonna lie, I'm doing a similar swap and seeing the trick you did with the screwdriver to tell if the cylinder is at TDC was incredibly helpful. I misaligned the cams and crank like an idiot🤦‍♂but my motor is a B207 so it needs new cams anyways.

      That's awesome your turbo motor should rip in this chassis. Check out the DDMWorks doc linked in the description for some great info on timing the motor correctly.

      @@mostlyuselessgarage I bet it would! The motor im building is an LSJ I’m putting into a Pontiac Fiero (haven’t uploaded anything about it yet). Very similar swap so I’ve been using a lot of information from DF Goblin and Ecotec Miata swaps:)
      Definitely will check out DDMWorks’ documentation too! Thank you!
