Wood Turning a Rubik's Cube Ball - Resin Art
Woodturning a Rubik's cube ball (or sphere) encased in resin. It's resin art! In this video I will demonstrate how to create an object embedded in resin; in this case a small plastic Rubik cube. Thanks to my Nephew Josh who inspired this project.
Over the years I've made numerous lathe turned wooden balls and the process is similar no matter the size of the ball. But with this project the challenge was to center the Rubik cube as exact as possible to the lathe's center line between the head-stock and tail-stock spurs. Any off centering would result in the cube not being centered in the final ball. In the video I discuss what steps I took and what needed to be thought thru before proceeding...

    How do you fill in cracks in your cutting boards or charcuterie boards when you’re using a single slab style.

    • @SapperWoodworking
      @SapperWoodworking 7 дней назад

      If the cracks are small, say less then 1mm wide, then I use a paste of glue mixed with sawdust from the same wood. If larger then I use West Epoxy to fill in the defect.

    I am almost 80 and absolutely love making biscuits. My heart says don't make biscuits unless they're for other people. I sneak out to a local biscuit place here in N.C. called Biscuitville so that my dough bowl doesn't get jealous.. I digress. I inherited a dough bowl from my grandmother, so it is quite old. I suspect it was made with hand tools. It does not seem to have had a finish applied but I expect the fat from the dough might have acted a bit like a finish. It is shaped almost like yours except the outside bottom surface .is more convex. A friend of ours had to remove a mulberry tree from her back yard. As a gift she had a local turner make a green dough bowl. It is beautiful wood. I have read that green turned bowls will change shape a bit as they dry and it did. Thanks for your video. For this type of project have you used a small chainsaw for gross removal.? Thanks

    • @SapperWoodworking
      @SapperWoodworking 7 дней назад

      Super happy you enjoyed the video and it’s even better that you’re using a keepsake item from your grandmother. Have you ever figured out how long ago your grandmother’s bowl was made? I’ve never used a small chainsaw for that type of project. My angle grinder with a wood removal disk does a pretty good job. Take care and I hope you have a great day.

    Hello, I really like your videos, I have learned a lot from them, unfortunately I haven't worked with the lathe for a couple of years due to a heart attack I had and I left it for a while. After that I have been trying to do it again, but the only thing I completely forgot is how to use the Digital Caliper to make the exact cuts to size, I have searched all over RUclips to see if there is a related video on how to make the exact cuts. san stop for segments, but even if I don't exist, I would greatly appreciate your help if you know of any tutorial that explains it in detail, to be able to make the cuts perfectly again since my cuts are not square. I will be very grateful, your friend and follower Enrique

    • @SapperWoodworking
      @SapperWoodworking Месяц назад

      I am not aware of any tutorials using digital calipers to make the segments. Best thing to do is to create some kind of a jig so you have more control over each cut. Another workaround when gluing up the rings is to just glue halves of the ring and then use either a drum sander or jig on the table saw to cut the edges square. That way when going the ring halves together, you’ll have a perfect match

    Question about drilling the hole for the tool shaft. I bought the same carbide tool shaft you used in the video. The rounded shaft end is 15/32 by a hair under 2”. Do I drill a 1/2 hole to ‘make room’ for the epoxy?

    • @SapperWoodworking
      @SapperWoodworking 4 месяца назад

      Yes, for a 15/32 shaft you would want to drill a 1/2 inch hole. Epoxy is a bit stronger when it has more “room“ in the joint. I also roughed up the end of the shaft a bit with 60 or 80 grit sandpaper. That will allow the epoxy a little extra bite on the metal. Good luck and thanks for watching. Michael.

    I'm kind of curious as to why you leave that much tailstock in the bowl, I'd assume it wouldn't add much extra support as soon as you reach the thinnest point of it, for example, let's say the tailstock as a curved cone shape, and at the thinnest point of the cone, it's 2 inches in diameter, then wouldn't leaving more than an inch or 2 past the 2 inches in diameter give virtually no extra support? I'd love to hear the explanation, as I'm sure it'd help me get even better myself, and just for clarification what I stated as an example is in no way, shape or form a fact, just my assumption, that I'd love to be corrected on if it's wrong, I love learning new things and improving on myself and my own knowledge, thank you in advance. I love woodturning and I'm fairly new to it, been woodturning for about 2 years but kind of took a long break recently due to the cold weather making it almost unbearable to be in the barn during this winter.

    • @SapperWoodworking
      @SapperWoodworking 6 месяцев назад

      I really didn't need to leave that much of the center "tailstock" portion inside the bowl. This was green turned and if I remember I was just curious how much that piece might warp as the bowl dried out. Really nothing more than that! Appreciate the question and happy turnings.

Step 3: Seek out the most elusive dragon for coverstock selection; they hoard the rarest and most potent bowling ball materials. Step 4: Convince a wizard to drill the perfect holes using their mystical precision. Step 5: Merge all components under a full moon while chanting ancient bowling alley incantations. Step 6: Dip the ball in liquid stardust for the ultimate finishing touch. Step 7: Test it out by challenging a genie to a bowling match - their cosmic insights will determine if your ball is truly custom made!
