Добавлен 2 сен 2020
Hello and welcome to Sapper Woodworking, I’ve had a serious interest in woodworking since I was a child. I began woodworking in a very small shop nestled within a basement utility room. Upon becoming a homeowner, I worked out of a cramped garage, then third car garage space, often spending as much time physically moving around tools (and connecting dust collection hoses) as actually making projects. Now I have my shop moved into a new “dream shop” home addition. Please considering subscribing to follow along as we begin making new handcrafted creations.
Wood Turning a Sapele Segmented Fruit Bowl | Yes You Can Make This
Hello and welcome to my channel. In this wood turning video I will demonstrate the process I use to make segmented bowls. For this wood turned bowl I used a piece of Sapele hardwood that had been sitting around my shop for several years. Nothing like taking a random piece of hardwood and converting it into a work of art.

The soft pine wood texture was more challenging to turn then your typical hardwood, even whe...

Beautiful piece well done
Thank you and happy new year
@@SapperWoodworking happy new year wishing you a safe and productive year
Convert to metric?? WHY???
Why! Metric is just so much easier to use, especially so when measuring out segmented pieces to cut. Michael
I’ve seen many many videos on how to make dough bowls in this one seemed to have been the best one I’ve ever seen! Very simple very resourceful using the Fortuner bits as well was a great idea.
David, thank you so much for the kind words. This dough bowl was super fun to make, and my friend is really enjoying it. I just got a batch of treats she made using the bowl. Thank you again and happy holidays. Michael.
I absolutely love this bowl. It was beautiful, subscribed, and thumbs up to your channel.
Thanks very much for the thumbs up and subscription! Happy to have you aboard
Another beautiful bowl and instructional video from Sapper Woodworking

I am happy to find your channel, I have done many segmented bowls , but every ring I cut has a small gap when I go to glue up ?
Brian, having an accurate jig to cut your segments is critical. Experiment until you find a style that works well for you. In the meantime, after you cut your segments dry fit the ring without glue. If you find you have a gap then glue up the rings like you would normally do into two separate halves ( by not applying glue to two joints opposite each other). Then you can then make the rings fit perfectly by either sanding the ends on a drum sander or a piece of sandpaper attached to a very flat surface. Or you could make a jig that will hold the half ring pieces while you run them through your table saw blade, squaring up the . I have a jig for just that purpose. I’d be happy to send you a picture if you want to email me at Sapper Woodworking at gmail.com. Michael
WoodPrix has very useful instructions with all details I need
Beautiful job. I'm glad to have found your channel.
Welcome! And thank you for the compliment. I’m glad you found it as well. Michael.
That's a gorgeous bowl.
Thank you very much! I was super pleased with how it turned out!
Continuing thanks, Michael, for both creating inspiring videos and sharing your talents with others. A righteous combination.
My pleasure! And thank you for the kind words!
The measure of a good woodworker is how well you hide your mistakes! You did pretty good. 😀
Thanks 👍 and very true. I much appreciate the comment, that made my day
Beautiful piece. Full View and Like 👍
Thank you! Cheers! Glad you liked it
The grain was awesome! Beautiful job!!!
Thanks very much. Spent a decent amount of time picking out just the right board for that project. That effort is almost always worth it. Cheers and have a great day.
Seems like you solved the problem with the same amount of effort.
Thank you and have a blessed day
That is beautiful! Great work!
Thank you
That came out great! Awesome work!
Thanks for watching and the compliment! Michael
Great video, very instructive! Love your shop set up too!
Thank you, glad to hear that and I agree. I much appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. Have a great weekend, Michael
Beautiful! Can you provide dimensions? Thank you!
David, I don’t possess that bowl anymore and it was basically made without written plans but if I recall it was between 14-15 inches in diameter and maybe 6 inches tall. Thanks for watching, Michael.
Thank you!!
Super job ❤️👍
Thank you! Michael
But what about the metal collet to keep the handle from flying apart if you were to get a bad catch or something???
Very unlikely to ever happen. The wood is thick enough around the tool to be similarly strong as one with a thin metal ring.
Nice work.
Thank you and happy to have you viewing the channel
Really liked your video. The dough bowl is a work of art. Congrats!
Thank you and happy to hear the kind comment! My friend the great baker is enjoying it! Michael
Interesting. Sapper Resinworking. No wood here! :)

Exactly!
truly stuning bowl would love to know how to design an amazing bowl like this
Woodturner/segment pro is a good place to start. Popular program for segmented turners.
I would agree with what Brad said. Although any segmented bowl can be designed with graph paper the software programs do it very well.

Wow! How creative!!!
Wow, and thank you
How do you fill in cracks in your cutting boards or charcuterie boards when you’re using a single slab style.
If the cracks are small, say less then 1mm wide, then I use a paste of glue mixed with sawdust from the same wood. If larger then I use West Epoxy to fill in the defect.
I am almost 80 and absolutely love making biscuits. My heart says don't make biscuits unless they're for other people. I sneak out to a local biscuit place here in N.C. called Biscuitville so that my dough bowl doesn't get jealous.. I digress. I inherited a dough bowl from my grandmother, so it is quite old. I suspect it was made with hand tools. It does not seem to have had a finish applied but I expect the fat from the dough might have acted a bit like a finish. It is shaped almost like yours except the outside bottom surface .is more convex. A friend of ours had to remove a mulberry tree from her back yard. As a gift she had a local turner make a green dough bowl. It is beautiful wood. I have read that green turned bowls will change shape a bit as they dry and it did. Thanks for your video. For this type of project have you used a small chainsaw for gross removal.? Thanks
Super happy you enjoyed the video and it’s even better that you’re using a keepsake item from your grandmother. Have you ever figured out how long ago your grandmother’s bowl was made? I’ve never used a small chainsaw for that type of project. My angle grinder with a wood removal disk does a pretty good job. Take care and I hope you have a great day.
@@SapperWoodworking I tried to find out but no luck. Thanks for bringing back a good memory. She was my favorite of all my relatives.
Bel lavoro ma troppo spreco di legno.

Very nice bowl! Do you have an ordering source for the cool glue bottle with the roller? Thanks
Thank you, you can buy the glue bottle with roller at Rocker or on Amazon.
Hermoso trabajo,felicitaciones!!!.Saludos desde Argentina!!!🤗
Why thank you from Indiana, USA! Super happy you liked the bowl. Bless you and have a great day. Michael
Beautiful job im relatively new to turning not woodworking but wood turning and also skatboard work but just got 10 really big decks all solid so gonna attempt something like this great video 🏴👍
Thank you! Working with skateboard wood is super fun. Most are of high quality and turn really well to reveal unusual color patterns. Michael
Hello, I really like your videos, I have learned a lot from them, unfortunately I haven't worked with the lathe for a couple of years due to a heart attack I had and I left it for a while. After that I have been trying to do it again, but the only thing I completely forgot is how to use the Digital Caliper to make the exact cuts to size, I have searched all over RUclips to see if there is a related video on how to make the exact cuts. san stop for segments, but even if I don't exist, I would greatly appreciate your help if you know of any tutorial that explains it in detail, to be able to make the cuts perfectly again since my cuts are not square. I will be very grateful, your friend and follower Enrique
I am not aware of any tutorials using digital calipers to make the segments. Best thing to do is to create some kind of a jig so you have more control over each cut. Another workaround when gluing up the rings is to just glue halves of the ring and then use either a drum sander or jig on the table saw to cut the edges square. That way when going the ring halves together, you’ll have a perfect match

Nice job man hey you know you can use the table saw
I sure do and have before. I love to experiment with different tools and techniques. Have a great day, Michael
Would you use a sealer coat of some sort over the dye prior to applying the embellishing wax? Something I picked up watching other videos.
I never have! I want the wood pores open as much as possible to allow more wax penetration. Although I’d be willing to give it a try sometime! Thanks for watching, Michael
are all you wedgie the same angle??
It's unfortunately not deep enough. Nice job, though.
The chef currently using it finds the bowl just perfect. Thanks for the kind comment
