DIY Truck Power Upgrade: Installing a Victron Phoenix 12V Inverter in my truck~and load testing
This is the EXACT video I've been trying to find. I'm trying to understand how to get to as close to the 24k watts without going over the 480 volts. What's unclear to me now though is what is happening in the combiner box. If 2 strings are coming in at approx 370 volts, what is happening on the output? Thanks for the great info so far!
@@XcessCapital yeah I’m going to be making my combiner box video next. It just takes me a while to get things done with my actual job also. The output of the combiner box would be 2 strings in parallel. So the amperage would raise, but the voltage would brain the same.
I have important question: is the max PV input current 22 amp total or 22 amp per string ? , the manual has 22/22amp.
@@luly2323 the max voltage and amperage specs are per string.
On my clone Amen solar 10kw I would get 0 pv from under 220V, I am going to try NHX firmware this summer, I got an update for my 8kw Amen and now the fans come on at 600w, they used to come on at 2200w with under 47c inverter temp, also it stopped tracking the generator hours , horrible firmware , cannot use the gen port either , run through grid port 80A charge and 2kw home load with gen gets me 60.1 hrz from my 9kw gen(6200)load. Either that or it is time for EG4 12K and fill the strings when I can.
What’s the brand name on the clone?
@GavinStoneDIY amen solar, I think I loose 3kw a day from bad mppt drivers
@@bobmonztr ah. Yeah I haven’t heard of those issues. You should definitely try the new firmware.
It’s a shame I just found out about this now almost a year after it’s been out. But better late than never My batteries are all out of sink, one light, two lights flashing red light on my six pack. Hopefully this will help.
@@cowboymcq6711 it does help for sure. But often times winter is when you’ll see the worst imbalances. Charging the fully at least once a week will help balance the pack. And with the lifepower4 V1’s getting them to 57v really helps.
Thank you, that was. My problem easy fix
Great video, question I know you put some ferrules on the battery wires, but did you use any crimper s or is not necessary just with the ferrules?
@@pedronhfd6969 I honestly don’t think it’s necessary. It’s just something to contain the wires as you put them into the terminals. And then the terminal itself clamps down on the ferrule.
@GavinStoneDIY Thanks so much for the help.
Hi Gavin, thank you for taking the time to create these videos. Is it possible you could create a video just focused on the critical load panal, this one is a bit confusing, perhaps a bit more dummy proof, just think about when you had no idea what you were doing, like making sure when your removing a breaker, reiterate that this is the main breaker as it was before attempting to install an inverter, stuff like that… are the wires you will transfer to the new sub panel only one wire? And would a 220v say for a central air both wires? These are just Some questions that are not quite clear ( to Me), or I’m beyond slow. Like a one legged sick turtle with arthritis on the one leg😮
@@Cross75777 I know how it is. Have you tried watching the wiring video I did on the 6000xp?
@ hi Gavin, i have and its been very helpful, I have the whole house on inverter power, but not with the city power on, its very difficult creating a critical load panel because the main breaker panel is In the middle of the house, and the inverter is in the garage, I’m running power from an existing 220 line in garage , The line for Dryer and Hot water, I turned off central air, its nippy in Miami today 6os :), anyway, I’m out sure how long it will last, because I’m not going switch to City grid power, ( my understanding is that if I turn the main breaker on there will be two sources of power and that would cause sparks to fly) anyway, thanks for your reply Gavin
@@Cross75777 yeah creating a critical loads panel can be much easier when it’s not going to be far from the main. Otherwise you’d need to run a decent sized conduit between them. And you may have a lot of circuits to move.
@ Helio again Gavin, so I will fill you in on today, I took the 8/3 gomex from the inverter marked for grid and used it to run the loads, since I have nothing going from the grid to the marked grid on the inverter, the batteries will not charge, its working wonderfully, I just wish I knew enough to allow me to run the loads and charge the batteries when they don’t have enough juicy juice by transferring back to grid, I’m pretty sure this will only happen thru a critical load panel, Until I see about an electrician doing that for me, this seems to work and I will manually turn the grid power on, turn off the inverter and charge the batteries with an the chargers the batts came with, they have gone all day, even now that the sun is beginning to set, really amazing, believe it or not, I decided to get this inverter to take advantage of the batteries I had for my inflatable, I have a 48v outboard which is equivalent to a 20 hp gas engine, I don’t use it much, so I will have a backup energy source if hit by storm or SHTF in other ways, realistically, the best prep is to trust in God to help you threw, he will, hope I didn’t bore you Gavin.
@GavinStoneDIY , do you happen to know at what point the fans kick on for PV input wattage? I have a 6000xp in the basement, and the fans are pretty loud when taking in anything more than 2000w of PV.
@@mattcwagner I haven’t hit that threshold with the 12,000xp. But my guess would be the same as the output wattage. So around 6kw before the fans start to ramp up.
Good for small needs but for whole house back up you would need 4 of them. 2 6000xp is a 100.00 more and have better features.
Yeah anything beyond 2,500watts I usually say to step up to a 6000xp.
How large is the solar array that you are using?
@@jasonchristian6262 the array I was using for testing is 2,400 watts.
When would you use the 1200XP versus the 12KPV?
@@Bgoffgrid3634 the 12kpv’s continuous output is actually 8kw. So that’s something to keep in mind. If you needed hybrid features like net metering or grid interactivity then I would go with the 12kpv or 18kpv. They both don’t need air filters and are outdoor rated also. The 12,000xp is an off grid work horse. So you can use the grid as a backup. You just won’t have those same standard hybrid features.
@ that makes sense now. Thanks for the great videos!
The 1200xp is such a good unit, Ive been using my smart load to "dump" excess solar daily into an EV without touching anything. I have also been able to crank my biggest 240v Mig welder to max output without even having the cooling fans kick on ( @ 131 battery amps continuous). I didnt know the smart load would take power in as well as output, if I hooked into line power to take advantage of grid tied solar.
Great video. I am trying to use the two wire start but you did not show any images of the wires you used from the chargeverter. Did you use the NO and the COM?
It depends on your generator. But typically you’ll use the normally closed and common I believe yeah.
@@GavinStoneDIY In my case NO and COM was what was needed and works like a charm.
I guess I don’t fully understand what happens when panels are paralleled…I thought the amperage had to match? In your scenario one string is 13 amps and the other is 26 amps. I understand voltage stays the same but do all amps just stack up? Regardless of panel type? Assuming relatively same voltage?
@@SolarinStarke-kt2lm this scenario would assume all panels have the same spec per mppt input.
@ right but you are feeding one side of the MPPT with roughly 24 amps and the other side ( I assume you meant the other side of same mPPT) with 13 amps. I thought you could only combine same numbers 12 and 12 amps for 24 or 10 and 10 for 20 that’s what confused me.
@@SolarinStarke-kt2lm technically mppt 1 has 2 separate inputs. And mppt 2 has 2 inputs also. So 4 inputs, 2 mppt’s. So that’s to allow a scenario like this. It’s specifically for paralleling strings of solar. So technically you could combine them all out in a separate combiner box and send one string in with 30-35 amps worth of solar to each unit. But this allows you to send 2 strings in and it’ll combine them for you.
Great review Gavin. Do you think it needs a third input for turbine. I find not many inverters have 3 input’s. What your view on how to set it up. Do I put gen on the grid input then turbine on the gen input? Is this bad for the inverter?
@@lennieadi a wind turbine? Typically you need a dedicated charge controller for those. They have a very inconsistent output, so a standard mppt wouldn’t work. I believe some of the midnight charge controllers work.
Brilliant. Thank you Gavin. I’m trying to learn as much as I can in planning a system a few years from now. These channels are invaluable. Thank you. Keep up the good work.
Have to get one of those. Been slacking on getting my system up and running but making headway now. Do you have a video on updating the 6000xp itself using a laptop? Think I will get a comms hub too. Thanks Gavin.
@@sammyboyde6489 I don’t have a firmware update video for the Xp. But if you have the WiFi dongle hooked up, then it’s as easy as hitting a few buttons on the monitor site.
@@GavinStoneDIY Thanks Gavin, so quick. I dont have a smart phone and was wanting to do it with a laptop and patch cable, (no blu tooth on laptop) the manual doesnt cover where to plug the cable in. Guess I will have to try and figure the dongel comms out. I'm old and "old tech" so it gets difficult, even to type., eyes... If I got a smart phone for monitoring/updating, would I need to have a time plan, like with verizon to use it for local monitoring around the property? Or would I only need a plan for monitoring when away? Thank You sir, looks like you are having fun with all these new goodies.
@ if you had a smart phone you could connect to it locally with just a Bluetooth. Or the smart phone and the inverter could just use your WiFi assuming you have it. The inverter can’t be updated with just a cable like the older models. You’ll either have to use Bluetooth or WiFi to do that. I still struggle with some tech stuff myself. But I’m learning.
Hello from Youngstown Ohio. I just inherited a brand new Phoenix 12/800 But there are no cables in the box. Can you tell me where I can get them please? Thanks (2awg? 4awg? )
@@tomm2271 it’s likely 2 awg you want. Amazon should have what you need. Just make sure to get it long enough for wherever you need to reach.
@@GavinStoneDIY Thanks for the fast reply. Im simply going to use it to run a few thing during a power outage. I'll have a 12v Lithium with it. I'll need to cut the ends off of the wires in order to attach to the unit.
@ sure thing. yeah, it’s best to use a ferrule on the ends of the wire if you have them. But it’ll work without.
Great job explaining, for a newb like me you really make me feel like I con-duit.
My Ecoflow Delta Pro 3 has a Nema L14 30 outlet so it isn't too difficult to imagine how I charge it with the Eco but as Im gradually upgrading my setup I need a way to affordably do the inverse and charge my Eco with a EG4 wallmount and have the delta behave as the inverter. Maybe on those same bus bars add an XT60I out and charge directly until I can afford the 12kwhpv. Am I living fantasy land here, is there anyone you can imagine using the EG4 in conjunction with Ecoflow Pro 3 swapping current to charge one another without an exorbitantly expensive All in one? Get the cogs spinning here I can't find any information on it.
@@BucolicAholic I believe the battery voltage on that unit is 48v. But I’m not sure on the nominal voltage. So that could be a factor. I think it’s a 15s. If it is then the pro battery would be a bit too high of voltage for it. You’d have to do the research on that. If it has the same voltage parameters, then what you’re proposing could be possible.
Doesn't the xp have 3 mppts?
@@SeleneHammer-pn8hr no. Just 2 really. 4 inputs with 2 mppts.
Can these chargeverters be used on a delta pro ultra.
@@qtrhors1 I don’t think so no. I believe the nominal battery voltage on those is 100v. And the chargeverter is designed for 44v-57v.
Not sure why you said this is not for lead acid. Doesn't matter what battery you have you should still precharge the inverter
@@sudo936 because with lead acid you don’t have that massive inrush current you do with Lithium iron phosphate.
@@GavinStoneDIY Yeah its still makes a spark though
@@sudo936 not so much trying to avoid a spark, just trying to avoid that 200 amp dump into the capacitors.
I would put the transfer switch where the disconnect is that way you could transfer power between the inverter and grid without killing everything.
Thanks for sharing your mistake, we all make them, I'm sure you saved a lot of people from making the same one.
Thank you! I'm going to switch out my eg6500ex for these. I like these units. If you don't have a high input of pv per string, then could your one unit handle a surge better? I'm thinking of overdoing the units so they perform better under loads. I've used signature solar in the past. NOT HAPPY!!! I have 2 banks of 6 eg lifepo4 batteries, which 3 have failed in 1 yrs time and one of my 2 eg4 6500ex inverters did too. No warranty given to me by signature solar!!! A COMPLETE RIP OFF IN MY OPINION!! I'm looking to replace with 4-10048 Sungolds and add an additional bank of 6 more eg4 lifepo 48v to go with it. I have 27 pv 450w-550 double side panels and will probabbly add 10 more of these panels. We are off grid with a breaker switch on the outside to use the grid if needed, plus an outside hookup to a chargeverter for our generator to charge batteries with. We have a small 2 bdr 1200 sq ft home. We hang our wash out and don't use a microwave. Our oven and stove is propane as well as our whole house water heater. Our home is heated by our 2 split units of Mr Cool while also using our fireplace insert to heat with as well. New dbl pane windows and new attic insulation of rockwool 45R. Just tired of overpaying and maybe having an inept install with our current setup. Signature Solar doesn't rate a 1 star in my books!! Thank you for making this video. Have a great day! BTW, I have spoken with you in the past about my setup. Keep up the good work! P.S., my 2-eg4 6500ex beep a lot when the sun comes out in the morning or when the the sun fades in and out with clouds, as well as when the sun is setting. VERY ANNOYING!! How do these relate in this respect?
@@lindaferguson593 I don’t think they would perform better with more PV in that regard. I think as far as surges you sorta get what you get. Have you considered the trade in program for the 6500’s? I realize signature Solar hasn’t treated you the best from what you’re saying. But I would definitely choose an EG4 6000xp over these units if I had the choice.
@GavinStoneDIY the cost factor deters me.
Could you use the communication hub you took out with version 2 Lifepower4 batteries?
@@ranchodelasirena7485 it’s currently not compatible with the hub no.
Another LUX like unit, probably from the LUX factory.
@@osvaldogarcia3197 pretty different actually. Different form factor and connections. But lots of the same features. But that’s fairly typical for a hybrid. The megarevo plant and lux manufacturing plants aren’t in the same place no. I think the more we see some of these features people like, the more often they are going to be appearing in other brands.
I'm running 2 of these batteries in my diesel motorhome (replaced 4x flooded coach batteries). The performance is AMAZING. Better than expected. My coach is full electric (no propane) and has residential appliances. My coach is a '22 and when it was new a fully charged battery bank would barely run the fridge through the night (without hookups). Now i never even use my generator! I could probably get 7-8 days fully off grid, its really amazing. Worth every penny
Yeah these batteries are great. Honestly I don’t think they get enough attention for as nice as they are.
Galvin, would you mind downloading the Overkill Solar App on to your phone, and seeing if you can communicate with the BMS of this battery? Interested in purchasing one, want to adjust a few parameters. Thank you, great review.
@@s.mendez7160 it’s not a JBD BMS in this. So the overkill app wouldn’t work. I think it’s actually a TDT BMS. I hadn’t heard of them before this. But either way you should be able to adjust any parameters you want with their app for this battery.
This is what I learned in my engineering class
How many 400 watt panels can I hook up to one of these?
It depends on the specs for the panel. But probably 9-10 panels.
It looks like it is very loud. I am looking to upgrade my Solark 8k that I have in the house, but the EG4 would be too loud.
@@mlg779 it’s actually fairly quiet. At full PV or full output it does get louder for sure.
@@GavinStoneDIY is the fan running all the time? From the video it sounds loud.
@ no the fans don’t really start running till around 6kw and higher. At the lower ranges it’s nearly silent. I cover this a bit more in my follow up video
Does this unit go to bypass mode when charging from gen? Or will it still invert from battery while charging battery? Seams like most use the inverting circuit as the charger. I have a military 10kw diesel genny with clean power. Problem is when i charge at max im at like 80% load on my gen. Then when the wife starts cooking or something it adds to the charging load and iverloads my genny. Or is it at least smart enough to monitor input load to not exceen geny capabilities. Like it will reduce charging until load comes down to not exceed set incoming amps
Good question. I believe you can set loads as priority and have charging second. So that way it won’t exceed your generators capacity. I suppose worse case you could lower your charging amps a bit if you suspect you’ll be overloading it. But that would sorta be a pain to toggle back and forth.
@@GavinStoneDIYbottom of page 44 in manual I'm reading now says u can set the max watts if generator and it will not exceed 90% of that. So that's an awesome feature. Trying to max charge with varying loads is a hassle
"Stay tuned" with this video to see good insights later on about wall mounting (the video's early "that was quick" comment, when the inverter magically appears on the wall straight from the cardboard box, was originally mis-interpreted to mean physical mounting isn't shown). Thanks to Gavin for quickly clarifying and for putting together what turns out to be a very good video on this subject. Much appreciated.
If by huge amounts of time you mean 3 minutes, then yes, this is true. I show the mounting process later on in the video. I suppose you gave up too early.
Did the $80 listing come with 1 or 2 busbars? It says “red and black kit” so im a little confused if i should order 1 or 2
@@joshuadiaz6914 it comes with both for that price. Positive and negative. That’s why it’s hard to beat that price.
@GavinStoneDIY insane!
I wish reviewers of this product with quick crying about the screen or a manual. Why do you keep trying to take the price of a product up? Pull up your pants and accept what you have for a great price
@@satguyou I realize others have had similar complaints. I believe I was the first though, a true pioneer. I don’t think adding a paper manual would raise the price. As far as the screen, it is extremely detailed. So it has definitely grown on me. It was a small critique, I even mentioned that in the video. It’s a solid inverter. I’m not sure how much adding color to the screen would raise the price really. But part of my job when I review a product is to look for areas where it can possibly be improved. So if I see something that can be tweaked, I try my best to cover it.
I notice your battery is sitting on the floor. Are you still hooking up the wall mount or using something else for earthquake restraint so the battery doesn't tip over. My battery sits 3inch from the wall due to the way the foundation is built. So I am looking for ideas on restraints.
@@chumanji9 the wall mount plate should be fine for what you’re wanting. On my testing section I don’t have it mounted to the wall no. Earthquakes really aren’t an issue where we are.
You can hook it up to your main panel with a interlock, so they arent "competing" with each other.
@@burneraccount3159 technically yes. And that way you could utilize it like a backup generator. But then you’d lose the automatic transfer to grid option. Plus it can save a lot of money if you are powering your loads all the time with the inverter.
Hi@GavinStoneDIY yes I think it's 10 watt consumption hooked up to the grid vs 50. Actually you can still do the grid backup if you have a outside breaker by your meter that feeding your inside main panel and you bring the 50 amp in from the outside panel. Thanks the video BTW, really helpful . I meant to ask, regarding the fan noise , how bad is it? Would a insulated door block the noise?
@ you’ll still hear it for sure. I suppose it all depends on the insulation you have. It stays fairly quiet until 4kw and higher.
Did you experience a warning 28 error? This inverter has a false EPS overload error that hasn't been fixed yet.
@@maxgor7959 I still haven’t seen this edit myself no. But I’ve read some comments from people online that have. EG4 has said they are nearly done with a firmware that rectifies this issue.
This seems a really nice unit. I at first thought this a grid-tie only unit yet see that it has an off-grid setting. I guess then its considered a hybrid? Thanks for the video.
@@geraldhenrickson7472 yes this is a hybrid inverter. So it’s capable of grid interactive features plus off grid.
Tell me about the 50a box you have connected to ac out. Is this then connected to your 200a main for the house?
@@Risingstar0324 no you’d need a critical loads panel installed to reap the most benefit out of this inverter. All the loads you’d like to power you can transfer over to that new sub panel.
Is it possible to have the generator supply 240v to handle and arc welder and air compressor if the battery system is not large enough to handle the demand? Thanks
It depends on the amperage those are pulling. If you don’t have enough battery then the unit will be limited. It can’t blend generator and battery together.
Are those 6WAG wires? The reason of the question is that my current setup has 6AWG input and output wires (RV5th Wheel). Have one system installed that went on standby mode immediately after it being installed and it seems like I will have to buy a different system.
@@RS-lt2ue yes 6 awg wire fits.
Thanks. I purchased one similar to the one on the left, from PowMr, not working at all. It went on standby mode and can't get it out of there. So, I will have to purchase one that actually works.
I bought one of these little ones because it fits under the seat where the lead acid batter used to go in my VW Eurovan obviously it will have to be charged a different way than the old battery. But I am curious about laying it on its side and why you would say you can’t lay it down one way but the other I’ll have to look through the manual but I couldn’t remember seeing anything.
@@peterad1529 you wouldn’t want to lay the prismatic cells on the side that faces upside down.
@ I mean, that’s not really an answer. What problems arise when one would do this
Subscriber question: is there a way to wire the 6000xp without the critical load panel but still capable of charging the battery with grid power, assuming no solar panels available?
@@alexherrera3918 technically yes, but not easily. The simplest and safest method is installing a critical loads panel.
" Need HELP " I have 3ea 24volts 200ah EG4 batterries with my 24 volts growatt inverter for about 3 years now. I am going to upgrade to 48 volts set up with this EG4 12KPV inverter My plan is to Add 1 more 24v 200ah battery to have 2 pairs of 48volts ( series 2 batteries to make it 48 volts ) with the total of 400ah 48volts battery bank to power with the EG4 12Kpv inverter Is this SAFE and POSSIBLE , also , if battery monitoring works on series connection Please advise Thank you
@@Bong2-ts6tu it depends on the type of EG4 battery. I know some of their BMS’s weren’t designed to be in series. Either way you wouldn’t have communication no.
@@GavinStoneDIY thank you
I connected my v2’s last night this video was very helpful.
@@benjaminsuddeth6448 glad to help.
I have one of these and I'm confused in the manual it says PV Max input 480 is that per imput or total?
Per input.
@GavinStoneDIY Thanks 🙏
This video got me so confused as I have this same inverter but have not connected it yet. The spec sheet says that the AC output is 50amps, It seems you are outputting much more than that. What size breaker does your inverter power for your house?
@@LarryRichelli I have it hooked to a 70 amp breaker. But that’s just because I have a heavier wire size. It can output more than 50 amps. But just for a few minutes. So essentially that 50 amps 12,000 watt limit is the continuous output.
so why didn't they include BT on the 300Ah version.. the 300Ah mini version is very beautiful .. check it out
Yeah I’d say they’ll probably transition over to BT for most their models.
