how could anyone not love fall? - Virginia (Oct./Nov. 2023)
A couple long days of driving with a plethora of scenic autumn foliage views through Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, and finally into North Carolina. The epic amount of eye candy was everything I ever wanted out of my adventure to Shenandoah National Park.

sick and the city - Bucharest, Romania (Oct. 2023)
Просмотров 35921 час назад
Our final stop for this trip was in Bucharest, the capital of Romania. We did a tour of the area and ate lots of food, but unfortunately I got sick and missed half a day of exploring. There is a lot of history in this city because it has been in the hands of a few different empires in recent centuries, and I wish I was feeling better so I could've learned more about it! I always wonder how tourists from the USA choose a hostel instead of a hotel or guesthouse, it is more convenient. Even though Poles earn much less, they would never choose a hostel. Poland is really cheap for tourists from the dollar or euro zone.😀

      Cheaper or not, $$$ goes further in general when you choose the least expensive option! In addition to saving money, hostels also provide epic social connection opportunities, and many even have free or discounted tours.

    The tiles on the roof of the Matthias Church are a Hungarian invention. Their name is Majolinka ( mayolinka) , they were produced in the Zsolnay factory in Pécs ( not pex, pech) . You can see these on several buildings. 6:06 the closer chili (here it is called paprika) is not spicy. It's red because it's starting to ripen. Usually this type can be seen in yellowish white. Commonly used in dishes, sandwiches, salads, pickled and filled with cabbage. It is the basic ingredient of two dishes. This is lecso ( lecho) and stuffed peppers. The first one is an onion-tomato ragout, and the second one has spicy rice meat in the berry. The more distant kind is pungent.. So much so that even its name is hegyes erős (sharp and strong ). This is mainly sold in dark green form. This is in biological maturity. There is a third on top. This is the kapia. Its thick flesh is characterized by a sweet taste. it is eaten fresh, fried and grilled. I don't think peppers have as much culture in Mexico as here..😁 7:01 This guy was a writer and poet. He cultivated the Hungarian language at a very high level. Shakespeare's translations still give direction today. 7.32 Figures of a Hungarian fairy tale series on the projector. ( Magyar Népmesék )

    0:32 there are memes where smoked sausage is the car air freshener.. Hungarian goulash is always soup. Stew ( in hungarian pörkölt) is another dish. By the way, the word goulash is also the name of a shepherd who raises cattle (syn. cowboy). So this is their food.. Which is not true, because they even had to report the animal that died of the disease. There was no meat like that. Paprika was expensive. The onion too. They mainly ate boiled pasta, prepared in a special way. It's a slambuc. For the shoes: The perpetrators also "worked" later. You can see things about this in the House of Terror (many people with a farmer background could tell you about it...me too). The Málenkij robot memorial commemorates what happened between the two. The word is Russian and means little work. Which in practice is 15-20 years in Norilsk or somewhere else in Siberia. It was enough if you were in the wrong place at the wrong time.... But enough is enough. Next time you're there, look around Margitsziget, the Buda mountains, Mátra or Bükk national parks. You can go to Hortobágy or even to Bakony. This is a mountain range on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. I recommend WithWillie's channel.

    Did you know why Western Christian churches ring bells at noon? In 1456, the city belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary under the name Nándorfehérvár. It was the most important defense point of the southern central border. By this time, he had already successfully fended off an Ottoman attack. However, Sultan Mehmet II did not give up and attacked the fortress. The Kingdom of Hungary was also prepared, and sent its best general János Hunyadi there. He was already known for his abilities. The Pope also sent help. A monk and something else. We will return to this. The fortress had to be relieved from the outside and supported via the Danube river. But the Turkish troops blocked the way. However, the Hungarian warship men's (among whom there were many Serbs) broke through and destroyed the Turkish ships. Thus, food, gunpowder and rested soldiers reached the fortress. The monk successfully gathered about 15,000 insurgents. But their fighting value was weak... In the end, the Turkish attack was successfully repelled, but János Hunyadi died in the outbreak of the plague.His son is the most popular Hungarian ruler Mátyás. In the meantime, the other papal help reached the Europe of the time, too. "Pray and ring the bell at noon for Christian victory" Then the Pope amended: "This is how you give thanks for the Christian victory." This victory was a huge thing, as it was achieved against the superpower of the time

    I know the street where your hostel is located in krakow. I used to visit a dentist who has a practice just a little further on, along the same side of the street as you are. I must say that after such a long flight, I do not think I would have chosen a room with possibly four total strangers to have to share facilities with. Incidentally, you could also have taken the bus from the airport to Krakow bus station and saved yourself lots of money.

    It was not only other minority groups, Slavs were also targeted heavily and treated as sub-humans, for example WW2 Croat Ustasha regime killed around one million Serbs in territory of todays Croatia/Bosnia (read about Jasenovac camp). You even had children-only concentration camps for Serb children in Croatia, the only such in ww2. The only difference is that Slavs unlike Jews put up a big effort to fight Nazis, Serbia and Yugoslavia had the most successful resistance movement of ww2 (French one was a joke, although in media and culture it is presented like the only one), as well as Poland or Ukraine.

      Wow, a concentration camp for children sounds absolutely insane. I am astonished at how cruel the human species can be. Fascinating that I don't recall learning much about any of this history years ago when I was a student in the US education system.

    Lovely tour, thank you. One small detail though - Serbia is not in Eastern Europe, it' in West Balkans. Never was part of Eastern Europe geographically or geopolitically. It is Slavic (predominantly) and Christian Orthodox (predominantly) country, but Eastern block was never part of it's history.

      @goldilocks_walks 14 дней назад

      Yes you are correct! We learned that it is considered part of central Europe. I guess it was never something I was taught prior to this adventure, and my brain kept reverting back to that classification for a while until I could re-wire it. 😂

    A small correction: this crime was not committed by some mythical Nazis, but by Germans. In current German propaganda, the mythical Nazis are accused of being responsible for this genocide, the aim is to cross out the word "Germans"!

    • @goldilocks_walks
      @goldilocks_walks 15 дней назад

      Interesting, what makes the Nazis mythical? Is the German state still aiming to eradicate the world's Jewish population today? I would imagine they do not which is why they might seek to differentiate between the two, but I do not know enough about German politics... Thanks for your comment and insight!!

    • @konradlewandowski23
      @konradlewandowski23 15 дней назад

      @@goldilocks_walks The entire German society participated in this genocide, but the Germans are trying in their propaganda to shift the responsibility to some "small group" of Nazis!

    • @goldilocks_walks
      @goldilocks_walks 15 дней назад

      Hm, I don’t agree that the entire society is responsible, some of its own population was Jewish and some non-Jewish people even tried to help, despite knowing they would face severe consequences. Many people had no choice but to submit or face execution themselves. The Nazi group was a political party which at its largest during its rise to power only consisted of about 1 in 10 of the German population. It sounds to me like their leaders hijacked the German government and used its army and resources to force their worldview on everyone else. Modern politics still operates this way but there are *supposed* to be safeguards in place to prevent such a thing from ever happening again. Much of the German population and the world had no idea exactly what was happening while it was going on, as they tried to hide as much as they possibly could from the public (which was much easier to do before social media and cell phones)!

      You know the saying: Don't let others tell you what to do. But listen to the mushroom expert. Narration is needed. Hungarian culture and thinking are different from the rest of Europe in every way. You definitely won't understand this without narration.
