Sign on the Fly | Traditional Sign Painting Pet Store Shop Sign
This was a quick practice for throwing a sign together on the fly. I picked a quote, decided on style and just started drawing and painting! I don’t do this nearly enough, but this is the traditional sign painters way! No computers, not iPads, just a quick sketch, paint and then covering up mistakes with more paint (see ugly af "buy" in the middle of the vid). A fun exercise and a good way to stretch my lettering on the fly muscles!

Hand painting a sign on wood for a short term rental property. I created the lettering in Procreate and tranfered onto a primed wood board. Painted using various enamels that are weather safe. In Gold Leaf and Hand Painted Letter N I painted on quick dry size, applied 22kt gold leaf and used a convex burnishing method to add a bit of dimension to this letter. I think it turned out great! awesome video! what was the liquid you applied to the glass to make the gold stick?
It was a mixture of water and most likely 2 gelatin capsules heated up so the capsules melt into a solution that dries adhering the metal to the glass. It's called Water Size in this state.

What did you use to burnish the excess gold ? Been having trouble getting mine to rub off. Is it possible the bloom strength is the problem ? (180 bloom ) thank you in advance

I watch your videos (most of them :) with great interest and I have a question for you, what sets of brush would you recommend for someone who would like to start in sign writing and glass painting ? Gretting from down under 🇦🇺
Thanks so much! My favorite brushes are Flying Squirrel Boxcar Series brushes and Handover 2112 series. They are both great sets for glass, plastic and wood surfaces. I'm not sure how easy they are to get in AU, but those would be my recommendations. Thanks so much for watching and the kind words!

Hi, thanks so much for posting, fab video. Could you tell me what you use for the two tone effect... Is one gelatine /water? The one you put on first, is it one shot size?
So I painted on LA Gold Leaf Quick Dry Size. Once that was dry, I just water gilded over top of it with gilders gelatin size and water :)

Thanks! I actually learned it from a class taught by Paul Myerscough from Bespoke Signs. As a beginner, it was much easier to learn than the mop brush I think!

Yeah, you'll see that clear layer that I painted on first is the quick dry size. Throwing that on first gives the gold a matte look that contrast nicely with the mirror finish :) Thanks for watching!

Very accurate hand line skill.
I live in a small town in south Wales, UK and it seems I one of few people that sign write with just brushes and paints freehand. Been doing it for 30 odd years though. Great stuff pal. Well impressed with your skill with a brush and mahl stick.
