The Goal of the channel is to help the newcomer to Ham Radio find answers, see different techniques, and consider viewpoints that can lead to their own method of enjoying the hobby. I share my journey so other amateur operators can teach me while I might provide an opportunity to help others learn as well. It is all much fun, camaraderie, and community.

#hamradio #pota # #overlandham Decided to head out to Lake Norman State Park, US-2740, and pluck away at my POTA Kilo. My experience with RVs led me to the idea that batteries specifically for supplemental purposes was the best idea, and would leave the vehicle battery alone and healthy. I have activated that park twice, once in 2022 and once in 2024. I activated from near 35°40'18.3"N 80°55'53.1"W.
Douglas! Thanks for stopping by. I will have to check those coordinates. I go down to the beachfront; either the parking lot or the picnic benches, or I go to the shelter down from the water treatment area. I'm not sure of the coordinates. There are, of course, more places. It's the closest to me, and I'm gunna give a go for the kilo. See you out there. 73 de Bill
It's cooling off at night in the desert. I will be really glad when the high temps are consistently under 100 degrees.
Douglas! Thanks for coming in. You are right. I can do 100, during the day, in the shade with no problem. Can't wait for 70 and below at night, lol. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Thanks
Thank you! I appreciate your encouragement. Come back anytime. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Most Powerpole wiring uses thin-gauge wires such as 18 to 14 gauge, which won't be stiff enough to let you just push the connector into the housing. In these cases, I use a small flat-head screwdriver to push the connector in. There is no need for that special Powerpole tool, a simple screwdriver head will work well. Thanks for this video, Bill. I forget that many have not tried their own powerpoles yet.
Dennis! Aww, Man . . . See you've gone and done it. You're are gunna make me talk about the "tool", lol. Yes, Sir. You are absolutely correct. I figured I would start out with a basic demonstration and explanation. I have used the tool and the small screw driver. I'll save my opinion on either until an upcoming video. I appreciate you stopping, watching, and jumping in with a comment. See you out there. 73 de Bill
@@AD6DMDennis i have had this problem. I used a flathead screwdriver if i have one on hand.
Simple and easy! Thanks for that Bill! Safe Flights 73
Thanks for jumping into the comments! I always appreciate the conversation and the encouragement is welcome. Thank you. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Very cool! Paired with K6ARK's antenna, this is a super portable, simple solution. Sweet!
Robert! Thanks for stopping by, and jumping in the conversation. That little combo is killer. It'll be that much more awesome when he releases the ssb. I can't wait. See you out there. 73 de Bill
OMG I love that shirt!
Thanks you! I appreciate you stopping, watching, and jumping into the conversation. I used to be part of an Amazon subscription for Star Trek shirts. I loved it, lol. They had all kinds of great ideas. I'll have to get that started again. See you out there. 73 de Bill
I appreciate you showing us the actual bag toss, something that most POTA / Antenna videos don't often show. I get it, nobody wants to have a camera document all the flailing around they do to get a successful toss, I wouldn't either! But your reverse toss method seems like the way to go, nicely done.
Thanks for dropping by, watching, and taking the time to share a comment. I try to do the videos that I think I would have liked to have seen. I try, lol. This one I wasn't thrilled with so I did another: ruclips.net/video/OfXlsMrygc0/видео.html This is only one way to do it. There are, of course, other ways that are just as good. This is the way I use most of the time. I appreciate you dropping in to say something good about the video. Sometimes the reverse toss, although way less accurate, has more power to get higher. With luck, it'll get farther up and where you wanted it. Come back anytime. See you out there. 73 de Bill
I too am a fan of a modular vehicle install. Nice to see how you do it Bill!

Nice mod for the QMX. I am surprised there was enough space in the enclosure. 73, KF4LMZ
Thanks for dropping by! I was surprised, too. The board is tiny, and I'm sure small radios is what Adam, K6ARK, had in mind when he designed the board. Perfect! I'm not too good at it yet, but it is always a backup or something to try during an activation. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Awesome! Glad you got the touch keying up and running! I am with you on touch keying in general. I like it as an "always there" backup key. I have figured out that a tendency to want to rest my fingers lightly on my traditional paddles which is not good for touching keying.

What was the name of the hooks you used?
Chuck! Thanks for jumping in with a question. I prefer a certain brand and type, Nite Ize S-Biner. Here's a link: amzn.to/3XUGWHH I like them because they are small and have a stainless steel body and stainless steel gate. I pick up a pack at Lowes every so often when I run low. I should catch up. When did you get the super duty?
Hey. I got that after Huntsville Hamfest. Going over there from North Carolina had me pretty well convinced. The trip back made up my mind. The F-150 wasn't struggling or failing, per se, but it was working very, very hard on some of those steeper inclines. I just figured better to have more power and less work at maximum effort. A couple F-250s fell in my lap; one bit me, and the other I kept, lol. The first one, the sales person neglected to tell me it was diesel def deleted. I didn't want that because I didn't know the ins and outs of registration. He didn't want to give me my deposit back. A conversation with corporate inspired him to give me my money back. The second one is gas, and it's doing ok so far. Hit me up on discord. See you out there. 73 de Bill

Now you got me thinking on how to redo my f150 console
Douglas! Thanks for stopping by. Every once in a while it's a fun project. It was kind of forced on me, but I had been thinking about it for a while. A ham installation is only temporary until you figure out how to do it better. Appreciate you watching the video. See you out there. 73 de Bill

Another great video -- thank you!! I've done various installs over the years, and this never ceases to be a challenge. On a few rare occasions, I've found it to work a little easier starting from the passenger compartment and finding the probe on the engine side, but like I said -- rare occasions! I'm getting ready to do it again on a new vehicle after having my previous ride for over a decade and about 250K miles, and, as usual, I'm mildly dreading the process (and procrastinating). I'm waiting for cooler weather -- that's my story and I'm sticking to it! 73 de N8ESP
Thanks for stopping by! You said mildly dreading, lol. I know exactly what you mean. I though I'd approach these series while remembering one of my more easy installations, and get it done generally. Then, Dennis from DenCo batteries asks a question that reminds me of one of the hardest I've ever done. I don't think I can do a video that covers all bases. I went the totally easy way on my latest install. I understand your concerns. I think I did them a little out of order, and my next video will "try" to fix that. I'll mention your suggestion to try to start from the passenger compartment. Thanks for jumping in the conversation. See you out there. 73 de Bill
@@Bill-HRT You're right -- you can't possibly do a video that covers every situation! Too many permutations! You covered the things they all have in common and gave the appropriate safety precautions (which is always an excellent reminder). Keep up the good work -- I'll keep watching and looking forward to a future QSO with you! Cheers! John (N8ESP)
Looking good brother.

Hey Bill! I been puzzling how to get through the firewall on my Honda Clarity. So far this has eluded me.
If you cannot easily find a spot to pass wires, you are describing what a lot of shade-tree mechanics have been talking about for 30 years or more. Manufacturers took the engine bay which one used to be able to literally sit in while working, and crammed it to the point that on some cars you have to hoist the car and drop the engine to simply change spark plugs. That aside . . . Get on your back in the foot well of your vehicle, flashlight in one hand ( or another adequate source of light) and look and feel around with the other hand. I have done this before by feel only; it's a little creepy to think you might short something or block some vital mechanical linkage. You mentioned the steering assembly; feel around for the large, rubber membrane. Feel for soft points. When you find it, that'll be a good point to penetrate. There is a spot to go through. Check with a forum for the vehicle in question. Someone has 'breeched' the wall. Let me know how it goes. Looking forward to hearing about your success. 73 de Bill And, thanks for the subject of the next video.
Missed the livestream, but caught the replay, which is the next best thing! 73, KF4LMZ

@@Bill-HRT I will be out working parks on hf, as well as for winter field day. I built 20m antennas for the shack and for portable.
What was that power pole thingy?
Kyle! Thanks for dropping in. That thingey that I totally spaced out on the name of is the Mini-Bar by WA2IVD. "The MiniBar crow-bar circuit is designed to protect electronic equipment from damage because of over-voltage in the event of a power supply failure. It is designed for equipment that operates nominally at 13.8 Volts DC." That bit in quotation is taken directly from the internet. They talked about it on Coffee and Ham Radios. I assume it depends on the physical condition how high one can get using these kind of tools, but may I ask what height (preferably in meters 😉) is realistic for an "avarage" ham radio operator that is not a particular sports man ? 🤔 Hope that questions makes sense. 73 de DO1HNR
Thanks for jumping in the conversation. Thanks for stopping by and watching. As I think about your question, I am reminded that I’m getting older. Accurate aim and use of physics becomes more important so that no energy is wasted. I am no spring chicken, but (13 or 14) meters and (45) feet are heights I get when I’m determined. I don’t get that every time; when I was putting my 160 loop up I had to try many times again and again until I hit the mark. (9) meters is all I go for when I’m putting up an efhw, and that’s good enough for me. Reply with your thoughts. I’m interested. I look forward to hearing from you. 73 de Bill
@@Bill-HRT Thanks for your elaborate answer and for sharing your estimations about what heights are realistic.🙂Being aware or getting older is apparently something we have in common, and besides that I was never good at throwing even when I was younger. However, heights of 13..14 meters make these throw bags/lines indeed an interesting alternative to what I am using currently which is a 12 meters (=40 ft) GFK pole. The GFK pole is easy to use as I meanwhile have figured out how to optimize the setup, a pole of that size is everything else than inconspicuous though. This is why I am checking out alternatives. At the beginning, I tried a sling shot, but it broke at the first attempt. 😐 Well, with the throw lines I now have a reasonable alternative to consider. 🙂 73 de Henner

Dennis! Thanks for jumping in. I appreciate the support and the conversation. That case is just a basic 4u, Gator case. It has served me well. Both sides are open, and I have never had problems with overheating. In case I do, I have two, 12v fans to move the air. So far, so good. I hand carried the radio to Flex in Austin from Charlotte to have it worked on. It was never questioned as a carry on by the airline. I have taken that radio to Huntsville last year in the back of the pickup; some people thought I was crazy, but I had fun. Again, thanks for dropping by. See you out there. 73 de Bill
@@Bill-HRT I have a Gator Pro 3U case for my 710. Looks like there's some room for a VHF/UHF mobile and perhaps a 20A battery too. Kind of overkill since I don't move around much like you do, but since when did that stop hams? Keep releasing these videos, we love seeing into your nomad journey.
