The slack between vanos gears is normal depending on where the engine stops in its rotation. You have to imagine when the engine is running, there is no slack there period and there cannot be or it wouldn't be turning the camshaft. It's the result of where the cams stop and or moves back when you turn off the engine. Additionally, when the engine is off, there is no oil pressure against the timing chain tensioner to remove the slack.

I want to adjust the valves on mine, does anyone know the valve clearances for these engines?

Aftermarket intake in engine bay intake? So change from stock cold air intake to aftermarket hot air intake. Hot air has a lower density, so less air equals less power. The owner is an amateur!
