How To Sharpen a Carving Knife!
It took me longer than i'd care to admit to learn how to sharpen a knife properly. At first as i got into carving, i thought that stropping alone was enough. I'm firmly and staunchly of the opinion now that it is absolutely not enough and that being able to sharpen knives properly is a must. I hope to enable you to be able to sharpen your knives without having to face as many hardships in the process as I did.
The stones I used in this video i got from Sharpening Supplies website. I purchased these with my own money after researching. I'm not an affiliate and i get no compensation if you decide to purchase them. These are just the route i decided to go for my sharpening.

How To Read & Understand Wood Grain

Grain direction is fundamental to carving success, if you get this down you'll only have to focus on learning how to find shapes in wood. Great video, Johnny. I just bought this same set per the recommendation of Master Carver Roger Stegall. Now with your vid I could be dangerous......

I've been struggling with sharpening knives for ages, will follow this and hopefully reignite my passion for carving. Thank you!
@@JoseSuarez-gl3ye Fantastic. I hope it helps! Thanks for commenting and watching.
I love all your videos, thank you for sharing 😊
@@arielmorales8822 Sincerely appreciated Ariel, thanks for commenting and saying so! 😀
Johnny! I suggest back lighting the blade with a flash light, checking both sides, to check for the burr at the end. Carving tools should whittle hairs before you try to whittle wood.
@mikereed4876 That's great, thanks Mike.
Great video, I like how it covers sharping in detail.
I tried to keep it thorough for folks just getting started!
Hi Johnny, great video Thank you
Glad you like it brother, thanks for commenting! =)
I spend more time sharpening and stropping than carving.
I find myself investing too much time in it every so often, but that maint does pay for itself.
@ I used to be a chef - you always get cut with the dull knife.
@@PaulRidgeway-h7l ain't that the truth.
I have been carving for ten years, and I have not used a stone on my knives other than to repair the tip. I have Helvie knives, and they stay sharp as long as I strop them regularly. I do own diamond stones that I have used on other tools such as "v" tools and some gouges. They work the best of all stones I own. Thanks for sharing.
@waylandgammill625 that's fantastic. I find that if it works for you that's the way to do it then.
Another great video! I don't think I would have had the nerve to touch a blade to a stone. I was always told that if you strop correctly, you should never have to stone a blade. My gut said that isn't the case, but I'm a beginner, so I was just going by what they said. How about I come down, have a pipe with you, talk carving and let you sharpen my stuff!
@toddjunck5769 😆 🤣 😆 it's not that hard to sharpen on a stone brother, but if you ever need hands on help, just let me know. Sharpening on stones intimidated me at first, so I made it a personal challenge to figure it out real well. Now that I have it down it feels infinitely easy. Next week I'm gonna do a review/How-To on a powered sharpening system. 😉 I'm too lazy for stone alone, and I'm carving so much I want to streamline everything
@@JohnnyTheLaytonwill do!
Great video as always!!! DMT are the way better stones Still using wet and Dry paper but planing to switch to dimond stones after I use all my sandpaper on stiks etc
@marlawhite3682 Thanks Marla! 😀
My dad could sharpen a knife to razor, razor sharp. His joke was the his knife was so sharp that the shadow of it cut the leg off a table. I never learned from him, although he always wanted to teach me. My teacher had a poor student. Learn whatever you can from those you have. I eventually got it figured out for what works for me.
@@scotttatlock3188 Wise words Scott, thanks for sharing that.
Johnny boy. You're the Bob Ross of wood carving.
@@tamarockstar45 haha, I like that. Bob Ross was a swell guy, I'll take that all day long.
Excellent video. Diamond stones are definitely the way to go for beginners. Great advice throughout the whole video.
@000cjr glad you agree, really appreciate the reinforcement. I tried sandpaper just ended up being a waste of money, they work, but not easily and not real well for me.
A slightly different take on this topic. I would so gladly buy a 40 dolar knife from the famous US brands like helvie, occt, drake etc, but I live in Brazil and they are simply not available for shipping or import taxes and fees doubles the price of anything. For reference a flexcut detail knife price is at 60 usd. It’s been kind of a bummer to this hobby since even basswood is harder and more expensive to get. I found exactly one Brazilian whittling knife maker and it’s working great although I don’t have much to compare to. It’s great to see different ways we can get tools to focus on what’s important, carving itself, but I’ve always liked knives and would love the opportunity to get my hands on the high quality stuff
Yeah, import fee's tariffs and taxes on international goods are crazy. Its awesome that you've found a good knife supplier though.
Hi Johnny. I've also started using diamond stones recently. I got a Sharpnal stone which has a course side (325 grit) and an extra fine side (1200 grit) and I also got a cheap 600 grit plate. Those together with a strop seems to cover all my needs so far. I've been using them dry but I'll try putting a bit of water on them now I've watched your video. Thanks! :)
@Grumpy_old_git-73 Glad to hear it. I tried without the water but the dwarf can build up and create an uneven plane on the stone. Once I realized that I was all about the water. Just make sure you dry/clean your stones thoroughly after use.
@@JohnnyTheLayton Thanks, yeah I wasn't sure about wetting them but like you said I'll make sure I dry them completely afterward :)
Great video Johnny! Do you eventually need to take the knife to the stone even if you strop it frequently? I haven’t dulled a whittling knife yet, but I’ve been carving for only a few months. Is that process a must someday or just when you forget to strop for a while? Also, I accidentally rounded the edge of my only v tool while trying to fix a tiny chip. Now the blade is even but a little rounded, maybe a video for v tools as well.
@joaofalco939 You know, i though that you wouldn't. Matter of fact I was certain. I was dead wrong. Over time the knife will dull if you don't go to a stone. It's slight, not much but over time it will. It'll shift slowly enough that it can be hard to discern till you get a knife that's hit the stone recently. I've carved over 200 carvings this past years and I have definitely seen the effect on my knives.
I have two of those knives and they are my favorite. I have two because I dropped one and needed to “fix” the blade. I fixed it with sandpaper but may grab some of these diamond stones.
@coreybrown1421 i tried and failed to sharpen properly on Sandpaper, just ended up being a waste of money. Diamond stones are easier to use, more straightforward, and they are so durable it's amazing.
Thank you Johnny ..Thank you for the lesson ..Great job

Why do the recommend mixing boiled linseed oil with mineral spirits on the back of the can. I believe I have the same brand you are using and noticed that last week while using it.
That is a HUGELY loaded question that will take quite some time to unpack. The gist of it is this, a little linseed oil can go a long way and you dont strictly need to use it undiluted. If you cut it with mineral spirits (a cheap solvent) you can extend your linseed oil MUCH further and make it last longer as you'll only be using a small amount. (Mineral spirits being far cheaper. Many companies due this to wood workers all the time and thus when you purchase "tung oil" you may not actually be purchasing tung oil if unless it says "pure" tung oil. If it says "Tung Oil Finish" then it's a mix of Tung oil, Boiled Linseed oil and a Mineral spirit (or some other cheap solvent.) Natural oils are very thick and don't soak into wood as easily, but when diluted with a solvent like mineral spirits they get watered down and are far less thick. That enables them to soak into a substrate much more quickly and then the mineral spirits easily evaporate out of the wood, allowing the oil let being to polymerize unobstructed. I'll be doing a deep dive into oils soon and i'll answer this more verbosely in that vide.
Lot’s of interesting information. I am familiar with boiled linseed oil but not the history. Great video and explanation!
Thanks Corey. It's really interested me as I was diving into it and i couldn't help but share a little bit about it as I was going over the safety stuff.
Thanks again! I have my eye on your carved Santa in background!
Thanks, I did him at a Carving seminar with Wayne Laramore.
Great video and precautions! I have used Flaxseed Oil from the health food store, which I think is similar to natural linseed oil. But it does take a while to dry and cure.
Yup, flaxseed oil and Linseed oil, the LIN comes from French/Latin syntax and the Flax from Old English/Germanic syntax. In common practice we refer to flaxseed oil when we're using it in food prep or related things and reference it as Linseed oil more often when associated with a wood finish or when using it to thin paints for oil based canvas painters.
Another great and informative video Johnny!
Much appreciated Todd. Thanks for commenting brother.

Tried and True is a great brand if you want boiled linseed oil with out the chemical additives. The call there pure boiled linseed oil Danish oil which is a little confusing.
Yeah, seems everyone who makes a "Danish Oil" has a different recipe than every other entity selling Danish oil.

Absolutely it is!

Thanks Mark, much appreciated.
Thanks for this video
Absolutely, thanks for watching!
I’ve got a question. I’ve got a jig and cut my basswood blocks into triangles on my bandsaw. Looking at the top or bottom of the block, how do I determine which corner to cut. If there’s any way you could show a picture of which way to cut the corner I would really appreciate it. Thanks for the videos. Great content and enthusiasm!
Trying to understand what you mean exactly. If you have a 4 inch long block of basswood, that's say 1.5inches by 1.5 inches. And you cut it diagonally down the middle. The grain would be running vertically. You can treat either end as the top or bottom. So long as you orient your carving as the grain direction being vertical, you should be golden. Does that help?
Thanks! Now I know that I don’t have to worry about that.
@@mdcurtis1968 Wonderful. Thanks for commenting, and thanks for watching! =)
I can visualise the gray beard & blue cape 🔥
Haha, Right!
Wow! Great information… Thanks!
@RoxanneBarich Haha, Glad to help.
Good job nice handle! 😃 Another way you could do it is to use a liner about the same width as the blade and just cut the shape of the tang in it and sandwich the liner and blade without having to chisel out the wood. Personally I use one piece of wood and drill a little slot in the end like how the original handle was fitted. It all does the same job in the end.
That's great input, thanks brother! =)
