Paint With Me! Fellowship of the Gnome (Ranger)
This is the painting video to accompany the Gnome Ranger Carving video. The first videos in a planned series. A "Fellowship of Gnomes" if you will. We're going to carve a party of Fantasy Gnomes, a Wizard, A Knight of some sort, maybe a rogue or a dragon. This carving today is a Gnome Ranger, with sword in hand. He's a fun little carving, and I hope you enjoy doing him as much as I did!

Enjoying carving with you. Like the style a lot. As you do.. helpful to keep little finished carving on one side. I'll take some pictures of finished pieces. Thank you
Glad to brother. Glad you enjoyed it!! 😀
Have fun at the event
@@AccessibleHunterPodcast Will do brother, thanks!!
Carving is with purpose and whittling only about relaxing with a smooth cutting knife making only shavings. Or exactly as you said 😅
@@JohnJude-dp6ed 😆 😆 😆
Where’s it start though? If you take a tree down with a saw is it now woodcarving? If you start with a cut out, is that woodcarving because a saw was used?
@coreybrown1421 I don't think I have seen anyone make the argument that cutting a tree down counts as woodcarving. Are you saying it should? To the second question. If you start with a cutout I would say your carving not whittling. Why? Because even if you do the rest with a knife, time was spent seeking the shape of your piece through a medium outside the knife. I would say someone is whittling when they start with just a block or a stick.
After I try my hand at carving your dwarf I’m going to follow this painting tutorial. Thanks for posting it. By the way, which video show how to make the antiquing wash?
@@RhynoMez it's called "Turd Polish" ruclips.net/video/INS7FZE9lZ4/видео.htmlsi=IG9mDmQeVTSVsIgN
Whoosh! The best definition I have heard.
Much appreciated.
Thank you for this. I just ordered the danish oil, paste wax, brushes, and some 2x2 blocks. I’m looking forward to following one of your carving tutorials soon!
@RhynoMez That's awesome brother!! Glad to hear it and thanks for Watching! 😀😀
Enjoyed this a lot, Johnny. Quick question: After washing, do you allow the carvings to dry (completely, or at all) before you paint/stain them? Thanks very much!
@stevenh-z8z painting is do fairly quickly. They dry for about 5 minutes while i dig out my paints, brushes, fill up a cup of water and lay out paper towels. I let it dry completely prior to oil. Usually next day. Glad you enjoyed the video!! 😀😀
@@JohnnyTheLayton Thanks for the help, Johnny!
@@stevenh-z8z No worries brother!
Thank you, this was helpful.
@RhynoMez glad to hear it brother. Thanks for watching.
Very nice ranger, clean and simple and full of character, just like your presentation of the carving process. PS, you missed a few phone "ping" edits at about 11:00 and 34:00
@@BirchinthewoodsASMR 😆 🤣 thanks! I need to be better about shutting that thing off, I think I've ended up just tuning the noise out and not hearing it at all.
Do you ever sign and date your pieces?
I didn't for a while, but I've started getting into the habbit of it more.
Love the ranger gnome!! I started carving gnomes and now I’m going back to them.. can’t wait to see what is next! Thanks Johnny.👍🏻
Fantastic!! We're gonna do this. A whole gnome party, I already spent time today playing around with designs for a wizard gnome that will go well with our party. 😀
I really like painting videos, I always learn something new.
Appreciate it Greg, thanks for commenting. Sincerely!
Great looking piece, I enjoy doing 1x1 carvings. Looking forward to the painting video.
That's awesome man. I hope you like it, really appreciate you watching! 😀
Johnny it seemed weird to see you put a glove on
😆 🤣 😆 I know. I want to be the best example for new carvers I can be. There are SO MANY brand new folks reaching out and watching, I just don't want anyone building bad habits. And if that means I change the way I carve a bit to help folks keep themselves from a hospital visit. Fair. 😆 🤣 😆
I enjoyed part 1 and 2 of the gnome Rangers. Your carvings are fun and simple. Which makes it fun🎉 instead of tedious and depressing 😢. The more complex the carving, the easier to fumble and cut myself. Lol. Thanks for spending time and us.
No worries Rick, glad you enjoyed this one! Thanks for watching, and commenting!!

Great inspiration and great video. I really like the dark colours on your Thor figurine - what kind of oil do you use?
@@peterlaurents4192 Black Walnut Danish Oil, then paste natural finishing wax buffed in.
The only downfall is finding a place to set it down. If you need to have both hands-free, I made a little stand that the dowel fits into so it holds the carving as long as it’s not too heavy.😊👍🤷♂️
@@als8326 I made a stand out of a 4x6 inch block 12 inches long and drilled holes in the top for the dowel sizes. I just don't use it. Too cumbersome.
Small dowel size of a pencil take a wood screw drill a small hole in the end of the dowel cut the head of the screw off stick in the hole screw it down in if you can then the sharp point you can screw into the bottom of your carving and hold a stick and you don’t have to touch your painting
@als8326 i made myself like 6 of those. It's just too much of a bother to use, plus I hate putting a hole in the bottom of the carving just for that. Even on the ones I don't mind I don't bother to use them though.
@@JohnnyTheLayton yup lol 👍😊
Great video I’m gonna write some of the measurements down on a piece of paper and then I’m gonna try carving one but also like to see a video on those flowers over in the corner by your carousel they look interesting. Thanks for the video.

Fantastic. There are a lot of acrylic paint colors that REALLY pop under black walnut danish oil. Take a look at the groots, the life green darkens and provides a neat accent there too!

Harder to stay focused on safety but I think sharp tools and firearms should never be aimed at anything you don't want to cause damage to.. Thanks for reminding myself and everyone safety and perhaps you do prevent a or many people from pain or real damage .
You’re absolutely right. Safety is always paramount! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Cute!!! 🥰
Thanks!!
Second video of yours that I’ve watched. Dude, what a great demeanor you have. Informative and entertaining. Kudos. 👍 Edit: They sell slow or variable speed grinders. Food for thought. Edit 2: Noooo, not the Flexcut! 😂
@georgevanaken925 haha, yeah. I have another grinder with variable speed sitting to the left of this one that I use for stropping. The paperwork on this sharpening system actually suggests NOT going lower in RPM though, so I didn't see a point in having another variable for this guy. Also, appreciate the kinds words, sincerely!
@ Ha, ha! If I used this system at the higher rpm’s I have a feeling that I’d have a conversation that went something like: Shop Visitor ~ Hey, nice Pfeil. I didn’t realize they made them this short. Me ~ They don’t. 🤣
@georgevanaken925 😆 🤣 😆
Just got the vice for my DMTs from Woodworkers. Well worth the money…
@georgevanaken925 yeah, I've gotten a pretty good holder for them now. A cheap one off Amazon for like $10 but it works fairly well.
Wow. You’ve done a fantastic job on this video. 👏 I have zero doubt, that you’ve helped all the beginners to carving that have come to realize that wood carvers are first, sharpeners. Well done. 👍 Edit: Subscribed
@@georgevanaken925 really appreciate you saying that, thank you. And thanks for watching!!
Great video Johnny ...I love power sharpening and thank you for expalining
Appreciate you brother!
So cool!
Appreciate it!
Thank you Johnny, I'm new to wood carving and didn't know how to sharpen my new knives which my kind wife bought me, they are beavercraft knives which are great from watching your video on how to sharpen them I'm not so worried about making a mess of them thanks again for your kind help Kind regards Tony
Glad to help brother, thanks for commenting! =)
I’m new. I purchased two cheap gouge “kits” to learn sharpening. I don’t want to ruin expensive gouges because of my sharpening ineptitude. 😂👍
@georgevanaken925 haha, I hear that! The good news is that most "tempers", the hardened part of a cutting edge, actually ho back pretty far. So you can sharpen a Chisel or a knife down to.. we'll in some cases down to nubs as you continue to use them. Some older carvers have stubai tools that are now only 2 inches long when they were considerably larger.
What, no beard ??😊
That's supposed to be a beard, it's just untextured. 😆 🤣
I think you are on it…..
@@rondavis1262 Thanks Ron!
Thanks bro! Tremendous video!✌🏻😎
@johncottle4464 Glad you enjoyed it, appreciate you!
I ordered this system a few yrs ago. Tried to like them but due to all the faults you mentioned I took them off and haven’t used them since.
@DrDennis yeah, it's definitely not perfect. For kitchen knives, fantastic. If I want to do a really quick, careful touch up on a blade it works well. But so do my diamond stones, and I'm not risking as much if I slip! 😆 🤣
Great video! As you said, I can see how it might be easier when sharpening the flat grind knives, although you are dealing with a thinner blade and less metal. When adding the grit, I wonder how uniform you can get that on the wheel. Maybe it's not a big deal. What are the slots for on the honing wheel? Is that for catching excess polish compound? I've been looking at these and trying to figure out how to mount to my lathe.
@fouroakscrafts7240 Supposedly the slots on a honing wheel, particularly on paper honing wheels, are designed to increase airflow and cool the blade during sharpening, preventing overheating and potential damage to the edge. I don't know how big of a difference it makes? When adding the grit it didn't seem hard to me to get it uniform, so long as the glue is smoothed out uniformly. I've been using it after having reapplied and I haven't had an issue.
Hey Johnny, I use a Tomz Knife massager from Tom Ellis. It turns slow so you don’t have to worry about burning up a knife.
@@hmk946 I'll have to check that out!
300 degrees distory the temer of blade have a glass of water or better a air hose can cool the blade and be no mess such as water.Yed seeing blue or discolored is a sign of damage.
I ordered a system like this just before Christmas. It’s taking a slow route via France. Will hopefully reach the UK soon. This review was perfect timing for me Johnny. Thank you
@scpattenden1 Glad to hear it brother. Be careful with it, mind the temp of your knife, if it's too hot to touch let it cool!
Johnny I've saved an old sowing machine because they are slower and speed control and reverse if needed something I haven't built myself but RUclips teaching
@@JohnJude-dp6ed thats awesome. I'd love to see what it looks like when you get it all done.
Honestly I cringed when you said 180 grit. I use a 1x30 belt sander (when needed) but I start at 600 and go to 2400 then leather strop on sander. I find that method more forgiving.
@@kevinoplinger3899 haha, yeah, it'll take things off quickly at 180. Your method is definitely going to be more forgiving!
