    you can get your skills back if you want. I think the guitar is more demanding in terms of left hand strength. so you can practice violin only to keep your skills and just in case you need it one day you will be ready! for me I have tried many instruments. violin is the closest to me. if I were you I will never stop playing violin and it's good that your injury healed.

    Thank you! After playing bass and drums in various types of punk and rock bands for 40 years, I foolishly switched to fiddle. I love it, but now that I'm playing out more I'm running into some real problems hearing myself and making myself heard. Even playing electric violin with peddles and an amp, I'm finding myself unable to hear, which as we all know is not optimal. Yet there is so little info out there about how to deal with all the technical problems one runs into trying to play a civilized instrument in such a savage setting. 🤣

    • @theviolincoach
      @theviolincoach 4 дня назад

      Ahaha my band was called Worldly Savages too, I was literally in a savage setting 🤣 good luck! I like an amp at ear level ideally and I also wear protective hearing wear. Well, I don't anymore as I quit but I recommend that. If you still can't hear yourself, you could try in ear monitors but I went deaf for three days after putting those in as someone turned them up for me but it deafened me. In the end, quitting was the best option.

      Thanks. I teach with Suzuki but I find the books do not go into enough detail for self teaching. The diagrams are very simplified. I learned with Suzuki as a kid and had a lot of tension before. I think the books are great for learning classical music quickly and also for challenging students who can learn theory quickly but they do not talk about the mechanics of the violin enough. You need a teacher for that.

    Thank you for this interesting video! I’m about to turn 40 and have started playing in an amateur salsa band. I feel 15 years younger but have struggled with the issues you mentioned. Not being able to hear myself has led to quite a few stressful moments of playing out of tune or messing up solos. I try to suggest dropping the overall volume of the band to a more reasonable level but have not had any success with that! I will try to use my guitar amp on stage to see if that helps. Has anyone tried using a clip on mic and a pick-up at the same time? One for the personal monitor and the other to send a signal to the PA system? Do people recommend using a pre-amp? I already have noise sensitivity so I always try to rehearse with earplugs but I hate the feeling of them when I move my mouth or try to talk at a normal volume and not being able to hear myself properly. Maybe I should try in ear monitors (where I control the volume myself)? I also feel I have not yet found an electric violin that sounds as good as an acoustic and the problem of not being able to hear myself on stage is even worse when I play an electric. I think they look cool and could be useful when I’m trying to sound like trumpet. I think that once I crack this problem of being loud enough on stage and hearing myself on stage I’ll improve my playing and have an easier time asserting myself as a woman in the band. Any further tips and advice are more than welcome!

    I loved the analogy of the paint brush. I’m going to try that. And I do feel tense in the body when practicing because I’m so focused on getting it right. When you said “breathing” I was like oh my goodness I knew I was not breathing but I didn’t connect it to my playing. I seriously appreciate the fact about activating the PS in the nervous system because it made sense to me. I’ve been feeling tenser lately so I’m definitely going to take the time to do some breathwork which always helps me manage and resolve things through the nervous system

    Eating large, low-carb breakfasts, and something light later on could help. And making your eating pattern a routine, whether you have a performance or not, will help reduce stress, especially combined with an exercise regime. Eating after the gig, and night-time eating in general is also better avoided. I adopted similar habits when I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic, and it worked wonders on my general and mental well-being. I sleep better too.
