- In this violin rosin tutorial, I discuss:
What is violin rosin and how do you use it?
What is rosin made from?
How to rosin your bow
How often should you rosin your bow?
What does a bow without rosin sound like?
What rosin is best for warm climates?
What happens if you mix rosins?
ROSIN RECOMMENDATIONS
There are many rosin brands out there but these are the ones I have used myself:
1. HIGH QUALITY PRO BRIGHT ROSINS:
Use a hard, yellow rosin if you are living in a tropical / hot climate, or if you want a brighter, louder sound.
Pirastro Gold Flex (the one I use most): amzn.to/4cXyA6K
Pirastro Gold Rosin (my other rosin): amzn.to/3xNyxM9
2. GREAT ALL ROUNDER FOR STUDENTS:
Hidersine Violin Rosin: amzn.to/3S6Hp68 (I used this as a student)
3. HIGH QUALITY WARM ROSIN
Use a softer, dark green rosin for gut strings or those wanting a warmer, smoother sound. Do not buy if living in a tropical / hot climate.
Pirastro Olive: amzn.to/3Y3WDwv

Lovely tone💥👍🏾
Thank you
As a necromancer of old long-neglected violins I have a huge collection of rosin that has come along to my possession in the cases they come in. I have read some people saying rosin deteriorates and "goes off" with age. I have never found evidence of this. My daughter prefers the ancient black rosin . I've loads of it in little old Victorian cardboard boxes - giving her a lifetime supply. It would be interesting to see what happens to black rosin in a tropical climate.
Orangey-yellow-brown coloured is exactly how I would describe it, too.
Unless it's a green or black one... They are less common
