We'd never played this together before and I'd never even heard the song. Therefore this is a good example of a very real improvisation scenario.
Improvisation is a very intuitive process for me. I play best when I play what comes to me, rather than what I think I ought to play. The mind must move out of the way as what comes to me is always better. My intuition has access to a far greater memory bank than my mind. You can tell when my mind gets involved as I start to lose my footing a little, especially just before the end.
A little whiskey helps too. Not too much. Just a little.
