Scots Pine Bonsai: The BIG chop! Hard pruning and future development
Ash brings in a large Scots Pine bonsai tree for styling. Adam wants to prune it back really hard, to just the lowest branch. Ash is not convinced. Have we ruined his raw material or set it on the path to becoming a specimen bonsai tree? Has Adam talked Ash into it? Will we both regret it? Will anybody care?!
As we often make, its a light-hearted videos which discusses the benefits of making a dramatic initial cut in terms of future development of bonsai. We'll show you some of the faults that the tree has and how to correct them. We talk about how to care and work on pine bonsai trees.

2 Pomegranate Bonsai Trees - How winter location affects leaf size tree & health through the year

One of the things that I find most interesting about bonsai growing is how small changes in location and environment give you different results in terms of the look and health of your bonsai trees. In this video, I have a look at two Pomegranate bonsai trees. These trees have been treated identically, other than that one was put outside early in spring, while one stayed in a greenhouse until ea...

Do you think you could you have guy wired the new leader up using a screw at the back of the cut trunk? The angle is still fairly lateral even with tipping it. Just a thought. Good move chopping it, you're right, those faults were never going away.

It looks so much better with the top cut. As you said, the straight trunk and inverse taper will never be gone. I have a similar predicament with a black pine I have (not as girthy as the scots was, but too thick to bend). After seeing this, it's swayed me more towards going through with it. I might just wait till later in the year. Great video, thanks.

Keep trying, sir (on the cuttings) ... I've been doing it for years with regular success, and yes, die off is not rare. That said, I can show you massive trees that are going on 20 years old that started at cuttings in s bucket, quite literally! Granted, those are in ground examples, not bonsai or otherwise potted long term. I've struggled with trees like yours there due to the insane growth rate they can take on when conditions are right. But they also stress out really fast of allowed to wilt too hard between waterings. As i imagine you've experienced as well, completed dry pot can push these fellas into becoming horticultural black holes, from which no parasite can escape once coming within a kilometer of the stressed tree. Lol. I have some corkscrew willow bonsai in training that I started a couple years ago, so I'm in the thick of it right now, my man!

I have grown quite a few willows, and they all die back to a certain extent. I have found that it is better to leave trimming them back until spring and then cut them back hard beyond any die back and deal with the new growth each year.

Hi lads.. On another issue just yesterday(5th Aug 2023) I removed about 60% of the leaves off my field maple after a lot of the leaves were looking nasty from I think a caterpillar or something, I know defoliation is usually done perhaps end of June up to maybe mid July, what are your thoughts on this..

Hi Graham, we do partial defoliation all the way through the growing season. Probably don’t take off 60% in one go normally though. Maybe a quarter up to a third. Can’t see it being a problem though

I’m making a pot that I need advice for tree design. Hope you don’t take this the wrong way ( don’t mean to plug ) But your advice would be gratefully received. When I’m finished the pot you will understand my crazy, ness It will be unique crazy and very difficult to achieve the perfect tree design. Please any suggestions or advice you could offer would be great. Sorry I don’t mean to plug just new and inexperienced!! Thanks for your time mate 👍👍

No, don’t mind at all 👍 Don’t mind the occasional pot that’s creative / different but (could be wrong here) I think most people want pots to compliment their trees and not distract too much. Maybe the design can be very creative but for me, the colour doesn’t want to too distracting. Shiny glazes for example are not great for me. Accept plant pots and Kusamono pots on the other hand can be great when they’re very eye catching. That’s just me though, everyone has different opinions on this 👍
