I remember fishing off the boats, the sea scout, the city of Imperial beach. As you said, I remember boarding the boats during rough seas, the captain would hook up a large chain and hit the throttle to keep the boat tight against the pier.

The Shelter Island pier is way too crowded, especially on the weekends. But it’s the best pier to see all kinds of different ships and boats. So there’s great scenery when the fish aren’t biting, or when the retired Filipino ex-Navy guys are catching everything in site.

Goleta pier was the pier I fished the most as a kid in the 70's and 80's Gaviota a few times in the 80's and 90's. Snuck on the pier in Carpinteria a few times when I was a kid always got in trouble and kicked off.

Can't stand that pier, everything I go there it's either super crowded, full of loud obnoxious people or there is always some goof playing crappy vulgar music that nobody cares to listen to.

I almost got killed, or at least had my life threatened by a thug (they like to fish piers too unfortunately)- over a post on the pier fishing web forum about 20 years ago, 21 to be exact. Maybe 2 posts, as I posted about a bonito bite and the next day the pier was over run by meat fisherman of a certain persuasion, which pissed off the regulars, then relplying to a post about a bat ray catch I was there to witness, i think it was because I mentioned the first name of the guy who caught it. It was his brother who was the one who confronted me, shoved me, knocked my hat with my license into the water, and said he didnt care about going to prison for killing someone. I should mention this was balboa, which i was technically a local living in costs mesa, and these guys were from san Bernardino county. If you know so cal, you know how much hate in general is in that area, gangs and intolerance and corrupt police so everyone is on edge, part of the problem or affected by the problems. I was much younger and didn't know or understand about my aspergers, so I would post TMI all the time and many misunderstandings would break out over the years, on several different hobbies/intrests I would cycle through with over enthusiasm (aspergers thing) over the years since about 1996 (thjs happened in 2003) And technically I am doing similar here.

I miss aliso pier, the diamond pier where you could drop down into the center. Lost in the mid late 90s to a storm. (South Laguna, OC)

I sold my Boat because Im getting too old and it got too much for me to handle. I do miss going to Catalina and Fish. I'll get me another boat, smaller, but I'll get out there. Cheers..

Our fisherie here in SF has been overfished for years and it's nothing of what it used to be…as a veteran like yourself, ... You should know what I'm talking about... The perch you speak of.. their numbers are depleting rapidly… back in the day... The Red Tail Perch were as big as turkey platters... Not any more…! Stripers use to be so abundant under the Golden Gate Bridge... Not any more…!…. Even the Halibut, ... Far and few in-between…! I've noticed other species have moved into the bay since I was a kid... I too have been around the block quite a few times in the Richmond District…

Connect it to the south, channel jetty with pedestrian walk. Then you could access Mission bay park from OB with outstanding views

Sure would be phenomenal to have walkway connecting to south channel jetty then continue on jetty to Mission bay park. But a super nice, fun structure like that could only happen in Dubai!

Ken, next time you are in the bay area and need blood worms you should swing by Benicia bait and tackle store. They almost always have them as well as pile worms. You will need to go somewhere else for live anchovies tho.

The sad truth is the photos from the past... 1950's, 60's, when you could catch Albacore Tuna off most Southern California piers and Steelhead in rivers (Ventura River to be exact) that weighed in the 20/30 lb range. Photos I've seen (I'm 72) of buddies fathers & grandfathers holding up stringers of enormous Steelhead while standing on the bridge (just before the river meets the sea at California Street) Photos of party boats from Oxnard, Channel Islands, Santa Barbara that needed gunny sacks & wheel barrels to get the catch off the boat and to the fisherman's car because the load was so heavy. The party is over ! We used up ALL the fun (fish) The Baby Boomers did it :) We got the photos to prove it !

Hello im new to your RUclips fishing channel im from California as love pier fishing 🎣 i love fishing for mackerel and halibut fish i fish a lot at Cabrio beach Pier in san Pedro California and i also pick up old fishing line that i see the ground and throw it away if i dont know what fish i cached i release it i only keep mackerel fish to eat

How about some sort of kayak ramp towards the deep end, past the breaking waves where kayak fisherpersons can launch without fear of capsizing. Personally, I'm willing to pay a small fee to do so.

Hi Ken. I was just up at Fort Point and did some fishing. It was a crystal clear day. I was right under the bridge. What a beautiful sight. No fish caught but met few nice guys and talked fishing.
