Selmer Radial Trumpet
Selmer Paris has produced some of the finest trumpets. Radial model trumpet was done in co-operation with Maurice Andre and it is a great specimen of the French factory. In this video I'll tell some background about Selmer and Radial model and there is also a playing test.

How does the saxophone feel? I’m thinking about buying one but I want to know how it is in action. Can you help me out?
The key action is a little clunky and ergonomics are not as good as some other models, but you'll get used to it. The sound is great!
name of the tune?
Joyspring by Clifford Brown
Timo, you are amazing. Thank you for the interesting videos! 😊
Glad you like them!
How does this horn compare with contemporary professional trumpets?
With most of the vintage trumpets (including this) I find that notes don't slot the same way as in contemporary horns. Current trumpets tend to make a rather precise switch between intervals but with vintage horns you can bend the notes easily and you need to seek the center of the tone. Vintage horns also quite often feel a little tight to play compared to contemporary trumpets.
Hello, my question is, what would be the necessary amperes and volts, for smaller or larger pieces?
Hi, you can find instructions e.g. from Tifoo where you can also buy the chemicals and equipment. www.tifoo.de/en/info-material/
Timo Myllymaki Good night!! could you make a video on how to maintain the valve of the Conn Connstellation 38 B. How to change the trumpet valve spring? I'm from Brazil I'm sorry for the English. 5:02 time from video

I'm sorry if I besiege you with my questions, I was offered a Keilwerth Peter Ponzol tenor sax but I don't know it and I would like to know what you think, it's still a sax made in Germany or made in Taiwan, thanks
Hi Timo, I would like to know are there any substantial timbral differences between the Amati Toneking saxes and the Keilwerth New King saxes...the sound of the Amati really surprised me. I have several Selmer Mark VII saxes and a Selmer Series III but the sound of my Amati is really special with a unique letterhead. I thought about replacing the left mechanism by taking it from a Keilwerth donor. Do you think it's possible? Thanks
Hi Timo, I have another question for you, I recently purchased a Keilwerth Nex King tenor sax without high F#, is it possible to add it like the original model? and in your opinion, how do I sound? the keiwerth new king has different timbral characteristics from the Amati toneking
Hi, adding a high F# would be quite tricky job. It probably could be done but would take a lot of time.
Hi Timo, your video is very interesting, I have a question for you, I have just purchased a silver Amati tone king tenor sax which has a key which I thought was the high f# but I haven't yet understood what it is for... another thing the amati have a truly incredible sound the only flaw is the mechanics of the left hand the keys are not very ergonomic and small for my fingers I would like to know if you could modify it with a more modern mechanics thanks
It is not uncommon that some of these have high F# and some not, there have been variation in designs. About the other question, if you mean modifying left hand pinky table (low note keys) to be more ergonomic, that may be difficult.
SA-80 Low LA Baritone Sax After Basic Review - Premodulates from LA at 2nd octave to SOL at 2nd octave and down low octave/loudly hears the low octave/.The two small vent holes open and close normally/consistently/ and are not clogged with nothing.WHAT could be the reason? Thank you!
Hi Timo! I’ve watched a bunch of your videos and I really love it! Appreciate a lot!
😅 That doesn't look at all like a Selmer Mark 6 lol. Where's the body engravings? Why not show the back of the saxophone where it tells the model and serial number.
This is a European model assembled in Paris, most of them don't have engraving.
I thought it was a Signature Selmer with the blues S on the neck. Either one is a great saxophone.
You inspired me to brush plate wear on the valve block of my silver trumpet, as well to tank plate the valves on my antique conn. They were copper plated and i plated the first valve and then spent quite a bit of time lapping. Used a combination of lapping block and 2000 gr sand paper. Had some trouble as the valve guide is attached to the top of the valve. Almost done
Great to hear! Removing the valve guide will help lapping, it would need to be either soldered off or then filed down. When plating is finished a new valve guide is then created and soldered back on. It will take some extra time though.
Thanks for walking us through the process! Nice to know how this is done!
Glad it was helpful!
I own a 1929.
Thank you for this vid. It gave me the courage to try on my antique conn. The 1st valve was so leaky I let it go 4 1hr. And was too much. How much lapping did u have to do before it fit? And did you only use that lapping tool?
Thanks! I used the lapping block and lapping compound from Ferree's Tools. Just keep lapping, and every now and then try to fit it into valve casing. When it barely fits the valve casing you can lap it lightly in the valve casing.
Thank you, sir.
Nice
Ive got a similar issue with a saxophone i borrowed recently. I am beginner and Im having problems playing the 4 lower notes since they overtone. Are there any ways to do a similar repair job at home?
Hi, I wouldn't recommend doing repairs on your own if you have no experience on saxophone repair. Try to find a woodwind repair technician in your area.
My favorite horn.... Silver plated for classic , beautiful ans soft.
excellent
Yep that’s it. The way each one blows matters too, volume & airflow pressure makes a huge impact on it. Another point of view it’s, if it’s worse with zero gap, why not chose a larger Backbore ? The big names havee we been talking about the gap only on trumpets …. There aren’t Gap on flugelhorns ?
Well said! I think gap is not such an issue in flugelhorn because it has conical bore and not cylindrical like trumpet.
@@timyllymthere aren’t Gap in Flugel Systems. The mouthpiece enters directly in Leadpipe. So, there aren’t any hall tube in the way…… What makes a Gap it’s the Receiver with Pipe matching, originating a space between the two.
They are indeed 'killers'
thanks for letting our eyes into your life!! great playing!!! i loved all your quoting!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hello! Is it possible with monel ? And what is the process ??
Hi, you can't electroplate monel because it's an alloy. You can only plate with pure metals.
@@timyllym Ok. What is the best to electroplate on Monel.. nickel ??
It is usually good to have a layer of copper first because copper sticks well. Then final layer of nickel because it is more hard and slick.
Ho can you brass plate a silver ring ?
Hi, you can't electroplate with brass because it's an alloy. You can only plate with pure metals.
@@timyllym The Ai said that the electrolite solution need to be a half mix of cupper and zinc sulfate
Do you check the bore of the valve to make sure the (holes in the piston)haven't gotten smaller?
The valve ports probably did get a little smaller in diameter. Ideally the ports should be covered with wax, white-out etc before plating.
Cool video. I enjoyed the backstory and history. I just bought a Selmer USA as my first bari and I agree that it has a fat sound. It was previously a school horn so mine needed a lot of work in the regulation. Also just got an Otto Link Super Tone Master 7 and i'm excited to try it once the horn is out of the shop.
Thanks! Selmer USA is excellent value for money.
Hi Timo, this Video is very interesting. It's a good ideal, to make the plating at home ! It's funny, that you plate a nickel valve . I'm playin my Getzen Severinsen Trumpet since 1979. But the nickel plated valves work very well..I think, these nickel valves are definitely the best kind of valves. Your plating method will be much more interesting for users of monel and Steel valves and Ithink, the method is the same..copper and the nickel, correct? Best wishes from germany, peter
Thanks Peter! Yes, method is the same for monel and steel. Copper sticks easily so it goes first and then final layer with nickel.
Thank you, this is very informative. Do you carry Dark honey gold Lacquer (cognac) spray to touch up an Alto P Mauriat 67RCL Saxophone? or do you know which color number that matches it?
Thanks! And no, unfortunately I have no idea of those lacquer color numbers.
thank you for the video, I always wondered how that was done.👍
Thanks!
Hello. ı bought an 1982 Tenor JK toneking. ı want to raplace the pads. Could any one tell me where İ can find New pads.
Hello, you can buy pads from several places e.g. musiccenter.it, ferreestools.com or musicmedic.com, but if you have no prior experience in repairing saxophone it is best to leave it to a professional repair technician. Changing pads looks easy but it is fairly difficult to get them seal well without any leaks.
poor volumn
What an excellent and informative video, thanks! ...I have one question, how did you know the valve casing was perfectly round without mic-ing it?
Thanks! For this video I just inspected the casing with light to see there are no dents, but you can't make sure it's perfectly round by just inspection. I usually use a ground casing mandrel but I didn't have exact mandrel for that casing. To be absolutely sure it'd need to be machined with lathe. www.ferreestoolsinc.com/products/n58a-ground-casing-mandrel-631-700

This video is very informative. Thanks for making this. What is in the acid dip? what chemicals or solution is in it? What chemical do you use for silver plating?
Thanks! I have used chemicals from Gateros and Tifoo, but you can get similiar products from any company selling electroplating stuff. www.gaterosplating.co.uk/product-page/gp-jewellery-pickle-salts www.tifoo.de/en/silver-plating-solution-250-ml

What type acid did you use to clean with
I use this product from Gateros Plating: www.gaterosplating.co.uk/product-page/gp-jewellery-pickle-salts
Does a professional trumpet hurt the development of a beginner trumpet student?
If the bore size of the professional instrument is something regular and not extremely small or extremely large, so the trumpet is easy to play, then I'd say that it can't hurt, it will only assist.
Great video! Thanks for sharing! You mentioned applying black oxide for an even patina... may i ask what kind og black oxide you used? And could you perhaps explain a little moor about how you applied it? Thank you
Thanks! I bought it here in Finland (link below) but I think you can easily find it anywhere. I applied it with a sponge and then washed surface with soap. webshop.sar-machine.fi/verkkokauppa/en/home/1878-sar-blitz-black-oxide.htm
Fantastic work!
Thanks!
i know the melody i think Leo P plays that on the BBC proms
Yes! That is the baritone intro for Moanin' by Charles Mingus.
Excelente video! Es un tema muy ignorado por muchos trompetistas y es muy necesario este servicio para nuestras trompetas.
¡Gracias!
Beautiful work. How may hours would you estimate that you put into this project?
Thanks! Quite many hours I think, I didn't count.
Beautiful sound. Thank you for the informative history of Besson.
Thank you!
When I began playing saxophone in the 4th grade in 1968, it was on my dad's 1937 Handcraft Committee. He had bought it used from a college friend sometime in the late 1940s for $50. I still have the horn and use it as my back-up alto. I recognized that sound as soon as you started playing! 🙂
That's a story! Thanks!
@@timyllym You're welcome! I was just looking at my horn last night. Do you have any idea as to the make/model of the single-engine airplane engraved on the bell?
No, I don't have any idea.
Probably any of a number of planes that were around at that time. Looks a bit like The Spirit of St. Louis. @@timyllym
