@4WheelingSA thank you. I own a 2005 fortuner. Finally, for an upgrade. I will consider this brand. I need to change my suspensions too. Should I consider heavy duty coil springs. I'm thinking of tough dog. What suspension brand would up recommend? Thanks again

Very awesome. May I suggest a video where you do a similar video but add text context which just shows for the obstacles as you traverse them what 4x4 mode you would be in, etc so that newbies like myself can actually see the results of these different modes ?
@@Bradford_Adlard thank you very much. I have tried to keep this video simple. No voice over or talking about products. Not sure if you watch RUclips shorts (I dont), but have created a series that covers a lot of the obstacles of the Lion Park (there is a short video on it to show how you can use it to drive the trail).

@@UnDEANiable only a pleasure. Thanks for watching. Glad I got you into a 4x4.
I guess of you do the hard core offroading like you it is required to do all those mods. Just wondering what the real weight additions are etc will be interesting
@@FORTUNER_ADVENTURES that is a very good question. I have tried to keep the weight down. Think the rock slider is 40 kg and the bull bar 50. Weight is a big enemy. Some rigs are just way overweight.
@4WheelingSA agree. I bought myself like a portable weight bridge to weigh my vehicles and caravan etc.for this purpose.. But by remov8ng that 3rd row seats you obviously also lost a few kgs
@ Cool! I recently did it as well, how much weight did you reduce it by?

October 24 we traveled through the kloof with our fortuner pulling a echo 3 trailer. Your video was one of them that made me plan the trip. We went from west to east with our last night in Kudu kaya. LUCKILY we where the only car in the kloof that day, As some of those climbs and turns is a serious issue if there has to be another car from the front. Especially at the Patensie side. Whole trip from Dooringkloof 4x4 - the Patensie gate did take me 7.5hours hahahahahahah. But what a abslolute JOL and thank you for this video it was the reason for going.

Solid advice from Henk!
Thank you
Henk I assume you refer to an exhaust upgrade but you do not say so or what the upgrade is?
Yes, it is an Exhaust Upgrade. I have installed the De Graaf Exhaust system. I did not mention the specific supplier as wanted the video to be about the concept of the modification and not the supplier (I believe this adds more value to you as the viewer). Hope it answers your question?
Thanks for the advice....does the 4x4 suspension make the ride harder, cause as is the Tuner does not have the most comfortable ride...
I prefer the ride over standard. It is firmer (make sense since you put in coils that can carry more weight). I have drive a standard Fortuner (rental) this week and prefer the ride in mine. You can feel the difference when you get the Fortuner to work hard (Load, towing, gravel roads, offroad etc). Hope this helps?
Thanks Henk! Beautiful video
Thank you. There will be a new version (from Dec 2024) coming out within then next month or 2.
@4WheelingSA wonderful! Thank you
Still happy with the formula 4x4?
@@OffRoadOdysseyZA So far I still am yes. It did solve the problem I had wen towing. It is much better.
@ done my first 1000km with the formula 4x4 when i saw your video and that it is available in SA and i have to say it is absolutely a great setup. Great videos!
@@OffRoadOdysseyZA Good to hear it is going well. Over December I have completed a 3500 km trip to the coast. Handled the caravan well and the Sagging at the back was much less with the caravan in tow. Done a 4x4 trail with it as well and it performed great!
Good advice there Henk!!
Thank you! 👊🏻
Very nice Henk!!

I also installed a suspension system sold by Dawie Harmse (DCS Suspension) at the same installer. Unfortunately, I’ve never been satisfied with the installation. The shocks were rubbing against the upper control arms, and the CV joint boot was also damaged due to improper installation. I returned to the installer to address these issues, but the problems persisted. I contacted Dawie once to explain my concerns. However, despite multiple attempts to reach him after that, he has not answered my calls. His latest "state-of-the-art" system may be the Formula Shocks, but based on my experience, I would recommend sticking with Pure 4x4 installers and tried-and-tested systems backed by honest and reliable support. Apologies for the negative feedback, Henk. I hope the system you were sponsored with performs better. Unfortunately, this reflects the reality many non-sponsored overlanders face.
Thank you for the very informative video, looks like very good quality products. Had a look at Formula 4x4 as a possible suspension upgrade option, this video answered several questions for me.. Thanks again.
@@kasperbester1766 Thank you. I am glad it did answer your question. Anything perhaps you still have a question on?

Couldn't agree more!
I hear you on the 3rd row seats.. I just removed mine.. Take s 12 minutes. Will place it back the day I need it. but the space gain is incredible. I considered the 7 seater option and for us the 3rd row seats out makes more sense 99% of the time to have that additional space and less weight in the vehicle. Those seats are heavy... Lekker man Henk sorry to hear about the clutch, but luckily that is in the past now and I can see you enjoy your Fortuner a lot, I myself will not be doing too harsh offroading, we just want to go places where the 4x2 just just can not manage or just just manage where the 4x4 is going to laugh..
@@FORTUNER_ADVENTURES my other problem is where to store them if I take them out…
@4WheelingSA we placed them in those vacuum plastic bags and store it is the roof of garage...

I have a 1KD Hilux, i have 3 inch exhaust, a remap of around 420NM (At wheels), a custom airbox, i struggle to touch even 450°C EGTs (post turbo), Brilliant modifications. The custom airbox alone lowered 50°C on average
@@ishaqthkr cool
Does your steering wheel crack at the top as well? I have checked this at dealerships and even there I saw 2nd hand units with 40,000km and 2years age and they had cracks as well.. Was replaced under warranty but even that steering wheel cracked
@@FORTUNER_ADVENTURES No, my steering wheel is still fine after almost 7 years. But it does not stand in the sun during the day often.
@@4WheelingSA thanks
Would gou suggest doing an exhaust before a remap? Would be interesting to see the actual gains etc
@@FORTUNER_ADVENTURES Definitely do the exhaust before the remap. It takes heat (lower egt) away from the engine. Think around 10 kW and 20-30 NM. But I have not measured it. For me it is more about how it feels.
If you're remapping then you better change exhaust to save cost
@@ishaqthkr I have a 2017 Fortuner as well which runs well on its standard exhaust after remap over 60,000km ago... My 2x new 2024 Fortuners I am still deciding and researching.
@@FORTUNER_ADVENTURES new ones are already very capable compared to the stock 2017 one, remapping the 2024s and pretending to be stock while you make some big dogs sweat on the highway is a completely funny feeling, what i like about 1GDs is that their pistons aren't a weak link like the 1KD i have, but then 1kds crack pistons even when stock so i may as well enjoy the few KW i gained which i am. I made a comment that i have a 3" exhaust (no cat), a custom Airbox and a 150KW/430NM (at the wheels) remap, after custom Airbox i can barely touch 450°C (post turbo) on inclines, the car has run very cold especially after custom Airbox. Those stock airboxes are very restrictive, and i don't have a snorkel either.
