    What would be the intended difference between a Series II and the Reference 54?

    • @KesslerCustom
      @KesslerCustom Месяц назад

      "Intended" can be answered several ways. In short, the Series II, before the launch of the Supreme, was arguably the most versatile model Selmer made, know for its richer tone and body. However, plenty of players favored a quicker responding sax. So Selmer eventually released the Series III which had far more immediate response, but was also brighter. When they launched the Reference 54, many miscommunicated it as a "remake of the Mark VI" but in reality, it was a new model that was trying to blend the immediate response and core of the Series III with the richer tone of the Series II (that's our take, nothing official). In the end, it still comes down to the player. We commonly found during that production era that MANY customers would come in for the Reference 54 assuming it was the best" because it was the most expensive. However, the majority of customers who travelled to Vegas to find their perfect Selmer would leave our shop with a Series II and a Series III neck. This gave them most of the the punch of the Reference 54 (due to the III neck) but the added classical versatility of the Series II - as the Reference 54 was not as easy of a horn to use in a classical scenario. Today, the Supreme is matched against the Signature model in a similar way, with the Signature being the new version of the Series II and the Supreme being a cross between a Series III and a Reference (quick response and richer tone, but not AS dark as the Signature). So far, since both have been out, we have found a similar trend to players preferring the richer sounding horn (Signature) but adding the quicker responding neck (Supreme). So many have left our shop with a Signature and added on the Supreme neck. -Dave Kessler

      Yes - you should instead take it in to a qualified repair shop and have them perform a professional cleaning/service. Then AFTER your instrument is back to proper working order, incorporate regular cleanings into your maintenance routine. Do not try and do this cleaning if you have stuck parts or damage.

    Great reviews- I tried the signature tenor for almost a month and sent it back to the store, as much as I loved the Signature I have the desire to try the Supreme before making the financial decision of purchasing one of them for good, I also tried the Supreme neck on the Signature and it was fantastic. I will try the Supreme once it is available but I think you can`t go wrong with any of these horns and BTW, I think I will be selling my 1963 Mark VI once I try the Supreme.

    Good video. Howarths make exquisitely exceptional Oboes! My LXV sings when played. 😀 BTW...Howarths also make all the Oboe versions, bassoons, Clarinets, Flutes, etc. They do not make every instrument like Buffet Campion or Yamaha... Howarths do make most woodwind instruments.

    • @chrisperyagh
      @chrisperyagh 2 дня назад

      Howarth specialise in oboes, d'amores and cors of all levels from beginner to top tier pro level. They also make a basic wooden flute for beginners as part of their Junior range. They used to make pro level clarinets (S1, S2 and S3) and also made some pro level bassoons (around 13 in total). All other instruments stamped Howarth are made for Howarth by other makers.

    Fantastic playing, loved it. There is something about the Supreme that I really appreciate. It has a big bolstering, fill the room kind of presence about it. The Signature neck on the Supreme seems to bring a focus to its sound. The brushed finish on the Supreme takes it to the next level. Thanks goes out to Kessler and Sons for putting this review together. Thank You!

    • @KesslerCustom
      @KesslerCustom Год назад

      Total personal preference in the end. The Signature is definitely more "traditional" Selmer with a darker, more focused tone - but it is also more resistant. So if a player prefers less resistance, then they will find the Supreme to fit more of their liking. The Supreme is more open of a sound as well. All personal preference. When testing with Charles, my personal favorite sound was the Signature body with the Supreme neck, but Charles preferred the Supreme body with the Signature neck. All depends on the person!

    Wow! You really made the SA80II sing, Charles, especially when playing the blues. Having said that, the Supreme and the Reference 54 outshine it. To my untrained ear, the Reference slightly edged out the Supreme in tone. I dunno, it has a slightly more vibrant feel to me. I guess the real difference between the two is the player's feedback. Which horn made it easier for the player to express himself or herself. Great comparison video. Had to watch it several times. 😁

    It is way easier to compare if you switch quickly from one sax to the other in the edition, I can't tell any significant difference, most of the difference usually is how it sounds to the player live, and how it feels when you blow. Other very important is how well the sax is constructed, will it stay long in adjustment? will the metal of the keys bend easier? will the laquer last long? There are some Yanis from the 80's with some very decent looks still. I have a very nice sounding and looking sax but, the laquer started to go out very quickly with only normal use. It goes out of adjustment quicker, One post was poorly solder. And so on
