How to make PLCE side pouches fit a Virtus pack
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.Год назад
Instructions on modifying a Virtus rucksack so PLCE Bergen side pouches fit. PLCE pouches are 10 litres each and cost around £30-£40 Virtus pouches are either 5 or 7.5 litres each and cost £70-£80 Not an easy process to explain but it isn’t rocket science, the whole job will take a maximum of 2 hours and requires only basic sewing skills.

Belgian army m1999 jigsaw camouflage 2 man tent review
Yes my thoughts are same fix new zip over and along side original zip had a strange rocket pouch a few year ago strange cam but it had double zips very good showing this gives ideas
Thank you! I was looking for this comparison!
That change was an excellent idea and should work fantastic. Thank you
I'd recommend getting a GSR haversack as a buttpouch for the osprey system and to swap out the thin harness with a MTP PLCE one, they fit very well and directly to the haversack which holds it all up better. Great for more storage and for larger things.
Thank you for the review. I like to stuff my bag into a good quality dry sack, can really compress it down as well.
VERY NICE..😅
Great video! Just a heads up, even though gore-tex technically is air-permeable, it isn't permeable enough for breathing. Always keep an opening in the bivy to prevent suffocation!
Nice
I’ve been using two ponchos for backpacking long distance trails since the late ‘80s initially surplus 58s at £8 each until they wore out 13 years ago. I replaced them with two genuine woodland camo USGI versions. Day hikes I always carry one. I also bought a desert DPM basha at the same time, it’s close but I prefer two ponchos that I can stud together to make a larger basha or a fully enclosed hooch in foul or cold weather, using half of the studs as a door. On the Pennine Way at Tan Hill, I camped behind the pub with several other way walkers using tents. Gale force winds hit us overnight, my enclosed hooch stood strong, others, even expensive Gucci type top of the range didn’t, flapping about with snapped or bent poles. NATO country armed forces ponchos are a standard size with with the same stud spacing so different forces can buddy up to make larger shelters. Your Dutch version should mate up with the 58 (my old 58s worked with my USGIs). They’re also wider than the civvy copies and longer than some, and have waist cords to prevent them flapping about as much. I also have a Nomad adventure poncho (no longer available) which has a zip on extension to make it longer which is useful as I’m 5’ 11”. That’s the one I take on day hikes or for fair weather camping and I use a lightweight bivvy bag. A German army fold up sleep mat, about A3 size folded fits in any backpack and also makes a great sit/kneel mat folded. Too thin unfolded for a comfy kip, but it insulates and protects my lightweight air mattress. A couple of years ago, I also bought a couple of Lidl ponchos from their WIGIG aisle, same price each as my two surplus 58s, very lightweight and reasonable quality. There’s a video of them on my channel, one featuring a collapsible aluminium pole which I had made up and use diagonally to make a hooped shelter a bit like a plough point.
Awesome comments and advice there! They are something I’ve come to rely on for walks and camps, as you say they are really versatile. Only gripe I have is that you do look a bit of a prat when wearing them, however it’s better to be a dry prat than a wet one I guess. Interesting about the Nomad having the zip, I can see that being a handy feature so I will definitely seek out your channel. Not been making any videos for ages as other things are taking up my time, but literally went out today for a walk in the woods in the rain, and of course the trusty 58 poncho came to. Thanks for the comment and watching.
I couldn't find the same zipper from the local store. Do you know what size of YKK vislon it is?
I spent over 10years in the British army. The standard bivvy was great. Swap the lace that's in the hood for some shock cord, means you can close it to a mouth size hole (calm down all you ex navy boys) and nothing ever got in. Or if it did I never noticed. Bought a Dutch hooped for my last few years in service but the basic was my favourite. Stick it in yer bergin and you can use it as a liner.
Maybe a Swiss TAZ 83 Alpine bivvy would be better for that time of year. I never thought it could ever be used 😂
Nice presentation, the hood is a bit jarring. But good info and as I said well presented. Thx.
To all that get these and make a bivi bag or if you use two fixed to make a ground sheet be sure when you use it as a shelter make sure the press studs are done up with the top overlapping the bottom otherwise water will run inside .
Ace kit. I bought a couple of sets for my boys to use on scout trips. BTW: I swapped out the plastic mug for a steel one - so they can keep their food and drink separate. Or cook two things at once. A bit more to carry, but more flexible. Cheers
I like hexamine stoves. They're cheap, compact and reliable. And, since dragon fuel isn't readily available in Asia, I've used 'em a fair bit. Smoke aside, the thing I dont like is the sooty residue they leave on the bottom of your mug or pot. Makes cleaning and packing more of a chore. But, as a backup, or extra, they're hard to beat. Cheers
Good summary. I think a regular bivvy bag and a basha make the most sense - practically and economically. BTW: The audio was fine for me. I'm more Interested in what people say, than whether it's studio quality. Cheers
Thanks I quite agree on the bivvy and basha
Used the dutch one but now since many years the Carinthia Observer Plus. Double hooped at the head and little higher. Doe the jib, but use it months in a row so worth the money
Great. The Carinthia observer looks a tidy bit of kit actually, but probably above my price range. Very similar design to a snugpak stratosphere but bigger and better. Enjoy it 👍🏻
I have the MK1 version and I found it surprisingly good!
the 58 better known as the crisp packet. brill video pal..
What zips does it use YKK or YYK
Ykk vislon I believe
@@guerrillashadowman Iv just bought some different YKK #10 zippers just hope they fit the rocket pouches
@@RoughWalkers i would think so, as long as they lock the same
Have you tested the jigsaw in rain storms?
Yes, the fly sheet leaked a lot but this was due to the poor condition of the seam tape. Seam tape had dried up cracked and was peeling off, so had to replace it all. Haven’t tested since but I’m confident it’ll be leak free.
@@guerrillashadowman that would also explain why you were getting wet.
I found a Hungarian Cold War version at a surplus store
Great find they are a great helmet
I have one (two) of this type myself not used it that much but I will say when I have used it the insulation quality was top notch! Really good for UK weather and each poncho really good for cold weather if your sat there for hours at a time fishing or hunting etc.
Yes totally agree, I love these shelters but just wish it was a bit bigger for sleeping in
Hi, what about Back Length adjustment? I'm 202 height and most backpacks are short for me. I have TT Range Pack Mk2 and use it straps on highest position and it is cool, but I need another one backpack like this Bergen.
Aside from the shoulder strap adjustment there is no back adjustment. This is because the Bergen was designed to use a DWD dynamic weight distribution system. That is basically a thing that raises and lowers the bergen with a hand pump, I don’t have that DWD unfortunately, so without that it’s a fixed back length. Pretty sure the DWD only worked when using it with a webbing belt anyway so yes not perfect, and it is short, much like the old plce short back bergen.
It’s hard not too be critical about your self, but I thought you great. I think I’ll stick to my basic bivalve bag for now
Ah thanks that’s kind of you 👍🏻 yeah bivvy bags are great
Like that video brave 2 do it on winter I'm running my season like this work a bit expedition work a bit expedition worked out d season 18 days worth of camping plus next year lookin 2 do an Ncfe level3 qualification in wood crafting qualification
That’s awesome best of luck with that
Yeah 👍 I fought so I'll keep my Mary another year and then decide slowly build up d funds u probably got a lot of survival skills but I enjoy my bushcraft course wanna b more involved
Great stuff mate, i was issued with the first virtus kit and was impressed, im thinking of buying the MK3 as the old 95 pattern PLCE bergen just doesnt cut it anymore
Glad I could help
Nice to see a new canteen cup Tuesday video out
I put my sleeping pads underneath this bivy (with a light groundsheet protecting it). Then simply either use lightweight small pegs (or make some from local wood), two on each side to prevent the pad from sliding out. Doing it this way means you can use any thickness pad you like whilst having a bit more room inside. The one thing I wish this bivy had is straps to hold pads in place underneath (same as the dutch army bivy).
yes it is a shame they didn’t put the straps underneath like the Dutch. with air pads I’m always concerned about bursting them as I tend to pitch in some thorny areas. as you say having a sheet to protect the mat is a good idea I’ll have to try.
Nice vid..i had the carinthia hooped bivy in the the Dutch army begin 2002 together with the Carinthia tropen and Defence 4 MSS ..the replacement is made by Fecsa du to the cost ...cheap basterd our Dutch government..greetings from Holland 👊🏽👍🏾🇳🇱
Your probably find better sleeping with the mattress on the outside
You should look at the German poncho, it seems to be very similar to the old British one :)
Yes well made heavy an durable NZ 👍
As far as what you saw in the sky, it probably was satellites. Don't be surprised if you see UFOs (or UAPs) though because they're around. I saw two of them through my birdwatching binoculars at high noon and I didn't think they even existed! At first, I thought they were probably some new kind of military drone that was secret but then I watched them disappear into thin air and that made me think they were more likely of potential alien origin. I checked everything I could think of to make sure I wasn't just seeing things but they were as real as the birds I had been watching when I noticed them flying a bit higher and focused in on them. I have seen some weird things at night but they were just unidentified. These things I saw at noon were some kind of silver sphere craft, like big ball bearings, and I've never seen anything like that since then. They weren't balloons either because I've seen those with binoculars several times and my binoculars are good enough that you can see the string and the creases of those silver balloons, whereas these other things were completely smooth, plus balloons don't disappear into thin air with no trace.
This reminds me of several years ago whilst driving to work, I saw some kind of silver sphere brightly lit by the sun. It didn’t appear to be moving at all, just hung in the sky above a hill. Never heard anything about it on the local news, so assumed it was either a balloon or me imagining it 😄
@@guerrillashadowman The first time I saw something weird like that, I looked through my binoculars and it was actually one of those silver balloons but as soon as you focus in on it with binoculars, it's clear whether it's a balloon or not. I was never one of these UFO people but hell if I can explain what I saw and even less how the hell they could just disappear. I'm a scientist so I tried to figure out anything that could have fooled me. Good thing they must be friendly because it would be one hell of a fight if we had to fight them.
Nice! I'm glad I found your channel. It's been too hot for me to go camping here for a little while so it's nice to at least be able to watch other people getting out in the wild for a nice camp. I miss my fort in the woods but I can't be going out there and getting heat illness like I have done a couple of times just because I yearned for the woods.
Yes the heat is an issue, particularly when carrying heavy kit to and from camp, for me anyway. Need to take extra water too which makes the trek even more of an effort. Thanks for watching 👍
@@guerrillashadowman Yeah I can't go out if it's going to be hotter than 80 F. I've tried and gotten myself all sick even when I went out early and hid from the heat under trees during the hot part of the day. It's just not safe for me to do for mere recreation. Gotta know your limitations.
Great info !!! Why was the "mtp" kit replaced by the Virtus kit ?
I believe that there had been plans for the introduction of the virtus soldier system, possibly even before the MTP set in the video was issued, so the mtp Osprey webbing was just a stop gap that was used for maybe 10 years max. A lot of stop gap kit was about during the early 2000’s due to the modernisation of the army and the camouflage change etc. 👍
MTP is the camo us British use, its pretty much our version of multicam (in my opinion its better) as for the move to virtus, it was to do with fighting light, the army pretty much wanted to slimline their fighting force, ditching the belt kit in favour on a body armour/battlebelt setup. Though the beltkit like seen here is still used. But i think its now just down to individual preference or mission specific orders. The virtus setups work better for mounted combat, due to the lack of bulky pouches to the rear of the individual. However the body armour is now standard issue, cracking piece of kit in my opinion. And is a proper replacement for the osprey.
Nice video, like the dpm Army bergen with pouches good kit & camouflage Guerrilla Shadowman 👍
May have been a bird scarer, rather than shot gun.
ok you may be right there 👍
Great vid mate
Glad you enjoyed
M1 thật tuyệt vời
Great video and new sub. Have you ever used the British army issue pack covers. Just wanting to find a opinion on how or if they are really waterproof
Hi thanks so much for the sub 👍 I’ve got one issue pack cover but don’t remember ever using it in the rain, so to be honest I can’t say for sure. I tend to use civilian covers these days as when in public I like to tone down the camo and look a little less military.
Continue the good honest work, this is very educational
That’s very kind of you to say! Plenty more to come 👍🏻
Morning mate. History always good. 👍🔥🦉
cheers mate 👍
If you don't need the metal wind protection you could put it underneath the stove in order to prevent a forest fire since hot ashes and ambers will fall out of them.
good thinking 👍
Compression bags messed up the loft on one of my bags. Stopped using them, just stuff bag into waterproof bag in bergan. Fills all the corners.
yeah I haven’t used them for years so just been trying it again really.
where did you get the bivvi? been looking all over for one
I found it on eBay 2 years ago, they do turn up occasionally and in fact I saw one recently on ebay so search under SAS militaria. prices are often over £100 here in the UK.
Where was it 26 degrees??
