Wow, what a beautifull axe!
What kind of planes are those?
That plate your using as a base to flatten your stones on, it looks to me like it is a cast iron lapping plate. If its not I'd be very surprised ! If if it's still flat it's the perfect thing for flattening stones, thats what it's, made for anyway, flattening things.
Bronze has become my favorite metal. It's so beautiful. I love your planes. Thank you so much for doing this series!
So you tapered the bridge mortise so that it was larger on the exterior wall? I think that's what you had said in the previous video. It's looking very nice indeed.
Do you know what your typical bronze alloy is that you order for the plane body?
How do you bend the brass and bronze without kinking or fracturing it? I tried bending some brass by heating and then annealing it, but it fought me like crazy. I'm assuming it work hardens like your typical nonferrous metals, right?
Can you still buy those thin files, and were your old ones made in Sheffield Bill?
These files that were made in this period were made all over the country. I picked them up in a box of tools at a sale ans some were given to me by a friend. The box has James Blundell Prescot Merseyside. There is Swiss Patent Precision Files on the box.
Thanks@@sarahcarter1319
Could listen to Bill talk for hours.
🎉I really like your videos on building boxes for a stone. I'm trying to gather tools to build a couple of boxes for my stones as well. Can you tell me the name of the type of planer that is used to level out the inside of the box, and also a quality brand to pick up? Hand tools not power. Thanks!
@billcarter2318 is the Coticule still for sale, I may be interested.
@sarahcarter1319 are any of these stones available?
Lovely to meet you both at the restaurant. Have subscribed! See you soon. Emma
Dear Bill, before I watched your videos I had never heard of the blunt chisel technique. Since a week I work with some blunt chisels on boxwood. It is a really great technique. Thanks Bill👌
Thank you for sharing.
Please post some of your drawings & plans.
Presumably you sharpen chisels the same way albeit at 25 degree angle? Thanks for sharing you knowledge Bill and Sarah
I don't check the bevel neither do I check the irons I just offer them to the stone and sharpen them, near enough 30 degrees.
Have you tried the blunt chisel.
Thank you so much Bill for answering my question. Cheers Alan
My pleasure,
Thanks so much from across the pond
Best plane videos ever
That was thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you. Is that some sort of leather hammer?
Bill isn't sure what it is made of but it is one of his numerous soft hammers. He has just been given a hammer for wedges and we did a video a few weeks ago.
Superb, Bill. Choose what works, keep it simple and do it repeatedly.
You are correct, keep it simple.
I absolutely love your channel I never known anyone with such knowledge on planes and I know quite a few older men who use these quite regularly. I use them myself another number of Stanley planes and a couple of record. I enjoy using them quite regular and I would love to own one of yours so if you are selling any in the future, I would like to know, please keep up the channel, and thank you for all your knowledge Kind regards, William
Hello bill . Just a quick question flattening the back of the iron using sandpaper method on glass without water i am guessing you would have to see a colour change if overheated by that time i am guessing it would be too hot to even touch at that point
You have nothing to worry about if you are doing it by hand you will never get enough heat to over heat it.
@sarahcarter1319 .thankyou so much for your quick reply :)
Thank you Bill for the recap on your blade sharpening angles etc, most useful…👍, nice to have a longer upload as well😃
I like to share the little bit of knowledge I have acquired.
When I sharpen I hold all my irons and chisels at one set angle, all done free hand, all done at the same angle that feels right. I never check the angles after I have sharpened, I just know they are sharpe. I will do a video and try and explain this. While I am about it I will take an average angle, they should all be near enough the same.
Great video Bill. Thank you very much. This clarified many things for me. One question please: I know that you freehand sharpen; are you aiming for a bevel of 30⁰ on the blade, giving a combined angle of up to 57⁰? Thanks cheers Alan
As always informative, a treasure trove one dsy I will make a plane
Happy anniversary!
Thank you very much.
Thanks Bill, superb information and presentation as per usual.
We try
Owning one of your planes must be such a privilege ❤
Thank you
Fantastic!
Dear Bill, what a nice gesture to make a video on all my thoughts and questions. It will be a challenge but this video adds a lot of value to my project 👌Also thanks to Sara for keeping the table of contents ( and the filming) ofcourse👍
It is a pleasure.
Congratulations on the 59 years!! The two of you seem to be great partners, especially Sarah since she allows you to buys so many amazing tools!!
😅😅 thanks for your kind comments it is much appreciated. Time has flown.
Back at a time when craftsmen did everything by hand. I remember having to make my saw bench and tool box as part of my apprenticeship. 👍👍
So did I, those were the days.
I don't understand, what is the purpose of making them, selling them, and then repurchasing them yourself? Is it for trading as a commodity? You'd hate me then, I'd buy one to use!
I make them to use but some don't get used which is a shame. A lot come from deceased estates. It is a shame because they are wonderful to use.
Thanks Bill, that's a really useful technique that I'd not heard of before, although I have at a pinch utilised a machinists scraper in a similar fashion ! Glad I've found your channel and have subscribed !
My brain is smooth. I appreciate the craftsmanship. But what are they for
The mitre plane is used for finishing work that is why they have such a fine mouth.
Beautiful buy backs, the bronze and the boxwood and its craftsmanship, wow👌 i would be very interested in a special on the wooden mitre plane, it is extremely beautiful, ehat are its dimensions, bevel up i suppose, how does it shave? Best regards
I have done a video of the wooden mitre plane working and it is bevel up

How much are they bill?
If you contact us on bill.sarahcarter@hotmail.co.uk
The boxwood ones must not be very good if you get to keep buying them back! I joke of course, beautiful planes. i agree the bronze is especially nice.
😂😂
Beautiful planes Bill, love seeing all the different shades of Boxwood.
Boxwood is an amazing wood.
lovely piece - need some long legs to work that ;<)
Yes
I guess you adjust it so the donkey is canted right over to minimise the distance?
@@rjamsbury1when I have time I am going to investigate.
Do you buy them back for more then you sold them for?
Yes and then I sell them on
It's beautiful! Lovely patina. I wonder how old it is.
I have no ides how old it is but it must be at least 18c, I would to know what trade used it.
Wow Bill I'm a Carpenter & joiner cabinet maker and I'm so happy I just found your channel and yes Norris plans are my favourite by a mile buddy thank you for sharing all your videos all the best Budo
This looks very special, It's in good condition.
Great advice, many thx Bill 👍👍👍
beautiful
Hard labour and years of experience and craftsmanship, but how rewarding when it shaves like it should be👌
Never have I ever seen a more beautiful piece of engineering masterpiece Norris jointer 22 1/2 amazing
