Tiki Old Fashioned: A "Tiki-fy This" Challenge
Просмотров 482Месяц назад
Let's put some tiki where it doesn't belong! To challenge myself, I want to try using tiki flavors and ingredients in classic cocktails that are as far away from tiki as possible. Tiki is known for having a large number of ingredients, citrus, tropical juices, and lots of rum. So, I started with one of the most difficult, a 3-ingredient whiskey cocktail. Can I make something that still honors t...

Whiskey, Spices, and Smoke, The Ghost of Smokey Joe
Просмотров 1512 месяца назад
"The Ghost of Smokey Joe" was a song by Cab Calloway in the 1930's. It was a follow-up to his song "Minnie the Moocher". So it's the perfect name for a variation of the Minnie the Moocher cocktail recipe. The credit for this cocktail goes to John Champion, who left his variation of the classic Minnie the Moocher cocktail in the comments section on DiffordsGuide.com. It replaces the original rec...

Zombie, The First Tiki Drink?
Просмотров 1232 месяца назад
The Zombie is one of the earliest tiki cocktails. First appearing on the "Don's Beachcomber" menu in 1934, one year after Prohibition ended. That means one of the most famous and popular tiki cocktails actually pre-dates the concept of Tiki Bars. To keep the exact recipe secret, one part of the recipe was referred to only as "Don's Mix". Since the recipe was kept secret, other bars came up with...
Shrunken Skull - The Easy Tiki Cocktail
Просмотров 772 месяца назад
Tiki cocktails usually have a high bar for entry. Multiple spirits and liqueurs, exotic juices, multiple pieces of fruit for the garnish... and don't forget the tiny umbrella. All for just 1 drink. But if you want a real tiki drink without all of that, try the Shrunken Skull. Just 4 ingredients, nothing exotic or hard to find. And it tastes great. 2 kinds of rum, Lime Juice, and Grenadine. And ...

Peaches and Scream
Просмотров 1152 месяца назад
Sometimes a themed cocktail is more about the name and the garnish, then the drink itself. Instead of trying to make a pumpkin flavored cocktail, or a Candy Corn drink, let's make something delicious, and dress it up with the right name and look. This is a tasty peach flavored drink in the style of classic cocktail. A blend of Rum, Peach Schnapps, Citrus, and almond. Also, I've got a store now!...
Tequila Sunrise & Sunset
Просмотров 6072 месяца назад
Tequila! The Tequila Sunrise is a very simple drink, dominated by orange juice and sweetness. I wanted to see if I could take this very simple drink and turn it into a craft cocktail. It had to use tequila and orange juice, and it had to have the colors of a sunset. I combined Anejo Tequila, Blood Orange, Mango, Passion Fruit, and Lime. And I got a much more complex, sophisticated drink form th...
Corpse Reviver - Revived
Просмотров 2633 месяца назад
My very first RUclips Video was about the classic Corpse Reviver cocktail. And watching it now... it was cringe. So I'm calling a Do-Over. I'm going back to that first video and making 3 cocktails. The original 1930 classic, a modern variation - the Sunflower. then, using the same basic ingredients and ratios of equal parts Gin, Lemon, aromatized wine, and a liqueur, I see if my own take on thi...

Tip Top makes a pretty decent canned Mai Tai now
I just tried that one, very good, I'd rank it as good as the Post Meridian. Both use the right ingredients.
what is proseco (sp)
It's sparkling wine, like champagne but usually fruitier, and less expensive.
thank you
I love the AiW decor! How creative! One thing you should do is link each of your channels in the other channel, I had no idea you had a second channel.
Thanks! I'm still working on getting the cross-channel links up. There's not much on the other channel yet. holidays and all, I'm way behind where I thought I'd be when I shot this video.
Love BTS
Thanks!
GODO SHOW
Thanks!
lol.. I like how real you are.. making a mess with your stirring and such... subscribed!
Thanks! I try not to be too precious about the process. I want people to know they don't have to settle for bad drinks, good drinks aren't difficult. Over-polished videos make it seem harder than it should be.
This is a fun video. Your Christmas Spice Cookie Old Fashioned comes the closest to what I do. I use a packet of Sugar in the Raw and MUDDLE it with five dashes on Ango and just a splash of seltzer water (optional). Then I stir in the whiskey with a some ice and an Amerena cherry (I used to use Luxardos, but I like the sweeter Amarenas a little more). Finally I pour it over one large ice cube express an orange slice over it and stick the orange peel and cherry on a pick for the garnish. Since it's impossible to muddle all the sugar into the drink, it will get sweeter as you get to the bottom, but you don't get that graininess this way; just a nice little kiss of sweetness at the end.
Sounds really good! Thanks for sharing your recipe. And if you like Amerena Cherries, I just found a huge 2lb jar of Fabbri Amarena at Costco for less than the 21 oz jar costs at most places. I won't run out any time soon.
Never thought to freeze eggwhites for cocktais! Does it work well, does it still get that nice texture in the drink?
Yes it does! I tested the frozen egg whites vs fresh in identical whiskey sours. Couldn't identify any difference between fresh and frozen. Same texture, same flavor. It works best if you put it in the shaker with one of the other ingredients and use a muddler to break it up. That way it integrates quick when you shake. And best bar is the should be good in the freezer for up to 12 months.
Great recipes!
Glad you like them! We took the Party Nog over to a friend that night, and it was also good chilled..
you do it so well!
Thanks!
Will be trying the Rusty Sunflower soon. The Penicillin is a winter favourite
Both are great. I'm making a couple bottles of honey syrup right now, just to make sure I can keep making both all through the winter.
I have all the ingredients. Think I'll have the Dry Coconut today while waiting for to coconut water to freeze.
My wife and I were split. We liked both, but I preferred the Stiggin's Pineapple, and she liked Cut & Dry coconut a little more.
Since I know ABSOLUTELY nothing about martinis except that they contain vodka, I challenge you to tiki-fy a martini. Bonus points if you can slip in a witty and/or charming reference to 007.
Challenge accepted. Possibly impossible, but accepted. Vodka, a tiny amount of vermouth, and maybe olives... as tiki... I may have to take a few liberties with this one.
Sounds absolutely amazing. I can see why it took you so long to come up with something like this. Classic cocktails are simple yet effective. Tiki-fying an old fashioned may at first glance sound easy but you can quickly start to break down how difficult of a task it actually is. You tackled this challenge in a way that I wouldn't have thought to do but kept it in the spirit of an old fashioned that sounds complex and tropical. Cant wait to try it myself! My favorite of all time cocktail is a Vieux Carre. That one sounds pretty challenging to tiki-ify!
I try to get a Vieux Carré anytime I'm In New Orleans. You're right, that one would be even more challenging than an Old Fashioned to "Tiki-fy". But now that I'm thinking about it...
uuummmmm. yummy!
So good!
fantastic.. i love rum. my favorite spirt. i can't wait to try these.
Hope you enjoy!
Great stuff! Thanks for sharing the inspiration!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This could be considered the Saks 5th Avenue (the flagship store in Manhattan) version of enhancing hot chocolate. I accidentally discovered the Dollar General version at a bar on a cold winter's night many years ago, pouring the remainder of two drinks into one glass for the hell of it: Hot chocolate and Fireball (about a decade ago when Fireball was just becoming a thing).
I could see that working really well. Cinnamon is usually part of the hot chocolate recipe in Switzerland, but I left it out since I knew I'd be adding other flavors with the booze
Very interesting !
Glad you think so!
I need to try this!!!
I used to avoid using peach schnapps, drinks I'd ordered were always super sweet. But this recipe is nicely balanced without losing the peach flavor.
@ feel the same. I have a locally made peach brandy (distilled peaches no sugar added) that I can use along with peach liqueur to adjust when making at home.
Try a Whiskey Mac. Good vid
Next time I'm at Total Wine I'll pick up the Stone's Ginger Wine and give that a try!
Good vid. I will give you my invention. The Dead Englishman, 2oz Bombay Sapphire, 3/4oz Apple Jack, 3 shots of Angostura bitters, shake well over ice. Squeeze lime garnish.
I do love an Applejack cocktail. I'll give that a try!
Sounds delicious
So good!
A book? I am excited to get that in my collection ❤
I'll make sure you get a signed copy. 😉
I like replacing the gin with Jamaican rum in a corpse reviver #2.
I've done the same. It's a great cocktail to experiment with. I've also had success with swapping the gin for cognac, Applejack, or rye.
i look forward to your book
There's still a lot of work to do, but it's coming together pretty well.
Lightning or strobe light??????😊
I can't reveal all my secrets. It's Halloween, I have to keep some things mysterious...
I will have to try this with Hamilton Breezeway Blend
That would be a fantastic rum for this. If I had a bottle I would have used it, but Breezeway Blend and White Stash have been impossible to find where I live.
sounds tasty
I generally find Orange Juice hard to balance in a cocktail, but I think this worked out pretty well.
I always comment I want to have a Halloween party that only serves variants of the Corpse Reviver
That's a great party idea.
looks amazing i'll have to try them when i get some absinth and elderflower liqueur
The Sunflower is definitely in my top 5 favorite drinks of all time.
that sounds good
It is! And so simple. I'm not sure why the recipe evolved into something with so many more ingredients, those are usually too sweet and a mess of different flavors.
Stay safe my friend
The worst of the storm has passed us now. Flooding is always a concern with a creek and pond on our property. But other than one dead tree leaning towards the house we made it through safely.
Just made a Prescription. Delicious!
Glad you liked it! It's been a hit with everyone I've made it for.
Nice tip with Sonic for crushed ice
Our local Sonic here has closed, but I've found a few other places like Zaxby's and Chick-fil-A will sell similar ice in 5lb bags.
Kind of like a Pina Verde with orange added
That was part of the inspiration. I love a Pina Verde, so I knew a Chartreuse Painkiller would be good.
I like a Rob Roy scotch instead of rye Monkey Shoulder is my Scotch of choice
Monkey Shoulder has been my scotch of choice for years. Also works great in a Rusty Nail.
Nice one, enjoy your vids
Glad you like them!
Thanks for putting me on to this video. My wife loves this drink 👍
Your wife has good taste! This is probably my favorite Orange Juice cocktail.
Love your vids. Could you make a blood and sand please??
Blood and Sand is a great cocktail! I already have a video for it right here: ruclips.net/video/KHI37pFBisc/видео.html
I like this idea. Choose a style of cocktail you want and focus on it, rather than the usual “here’s the 5 bottles you need to make anything” type of recommendation, which tends to leave you not being able to make what you really want to drink. I started out by listing a couple of dozen or so cocktails I wanted to try, and then selecting the ingredients that would allow me to make the largest number of them. I already had most of the base spirits, so I was focusing on the liqueurs and fortified wines I needed. I think I started with dry vermouth, maraschino, triple sec, Benedictine and Chambord. A year or so down the line, and they are still the ones I use most.
Those are some great choices for liqueurs, I think for myself, I'd have to swap Elderflower liqueur for one of those. It's probably the one bottle I go through the most.
@@speakeasyspirits It’s next on my list to get. I would have skipped the Chambord, but I really like it in a modified Bramble replacing the crème de cassis
Interesting video, the tiki recommendations sound great I also have a 151 Demarera, like Lemon hart or Hamilton. Good info on the gin some of those I've never heard of and sound interesting. A correction on the Tequila though, Reposado (rested) is younger than Anejo, being aged less than a year, Anejo (aged or old) over a year and up to three and Extra Anejo over three years
After getting started with some tiki basics, the next bottle would absolutely be an overproof rum. And those 2 would be top of my list. Unfortunately, I can also attest to how hard they can be to get in some areas. I haven't seen Lemon Heart in my area in about 3 years, and I'm almost out of Hamilton 151.
Hey. Just found your channel and I’ve watched a few videos. Any chance of an updated bar tour?
Funny you should say that... I was thinking the same thing. That will probably be in one of the next couple videos.
@@speakeasyspirits Awesome. Happy to find your channel and I have of course subscribed. You have good production value with the lights and monitor setup. I’d be interested in a bar tour of the working space because many home bar videos are “here are all my things” but not as much about how t they make cocktails in the space. I’m a bartender of fifteen years and the ergonomics of the work space are really important to me. You mentioned in a rum video that it’s your favourite spirit. Tiki is having a moment on RUclips currently. Do you think you’ll move into that space and do some tiki cocktails and such?
@@adamg.manning6088 I'll make sure to show how I use all the space. One thing I'm very proud of is that it's not just a background set for filming, but a fully functioning home bar. My wife and I just hosted a bunch of people in there tonight. I do dabble in tiki from time to time. I have a few tiki cocktails on my to-do list for this fall, like Pearl Diver.
@@speakeasyspirits I look forward to all of that then. Cheers.
My preferred Manhattan uses equal parts 50% abv rye and high quality sweet vermouth. This gives you the same final abv as a 2:1 Manhattan made with 40% abv rye, but you get more of the taste of the vermouth. I think Angostura bitters works better than a Boker's style bitters, and that may be why Angostura bitters survived the 1970s and '80s.
That sounds like my kind of ratio. I love a vermouth forward cocktail. Thanks for sharing!
Straight up in a coupe or martini glass only. No ice.
A Classic. And how I usually drink mine... except when shooting a video in the summer without A/C. Thanks for the comment!
not my favorite
Just found this, subscribed, hope you make it to your goal and beyond. Greetings from Mexico!
Awesome! Thank you!
good job. i would love to try them both
Great idea with the small bottles. Thanks!!
You are so welcome!
Great video, and the Last Word is my wife’s favorite cocktail! Your story is similar to my story. Cheap beer in college, then whisky cokes at country dance halls, to nicer whiskeys and craft beers, wines, and then crafted cocktails - which I then began making at home. Subscribed! Keep up the good work!
Thanks!
