Not the smoothest run, but finishing with over 10 lives in reserve is still decent I guess. Disappointed with several deaths on the final boss, coming straight from a practice session with multiple deathless fights on that boss, but it *is* a pretty hectic fight, and dying once and losing your powerup can very easily result in subsequent chain deaths.       @@dr_ubo I love the arcade ambience in the background. You can clearly hear the Uo Poko right next to the cab, and at least a Donkey Kong and Gyruss elsewhere. I probably should have turned up the volume of my cab a bit further though

      I think most of the time I spent practicing the game was spent practicing recovery from checkpoints. :) Mostly naturally though, since I'd die at those checkpoints, and had only been playing on original hardware (no savestate luxury). But I really do think the recovery in this game is one of its biggest strengths. It's clearly designed around those checkpoints to avoid "gradius syndrom", and some of the recoveries (most of which I did evade completely in this playthrough) are really enjoyable to pull off I think.

    Does this work on every single original NES including the famicom? Also where do you buy the cartridge for this version of Donkey Kong? I know it's fan-made. But other people seem to have it too, so where do you get it?

      Yes, it will work on any NES or Famicom :) There were only 15 cartridges made unfortunately. Since Nintendo owns the property there is no way for me to sell them, sorry.

      The catch is you need to get enough money to afford it, otherwise it won't even show. That is why I start out going back and forth farming for coins.

      Simply play through story mode on any difficulty, some times you'll get this character, other times you'll get the samurai on stage 5 (i think it's random) . If you just play till the end you'll unlock the character you played as, doesn't matter if you continued :)

      A bit of a mix of all those, haha. It's really hard for me to put a finger on exactly what it is, but the easiest explanation as I see it is that the enemies you encounter don't really offer much in terms of affecting how you approach them - you just go up and whack them. And if you're at a somewhat awkward angle you'll miss them and they hit you instead. I find Bitmap Bureau's other game collaboration with Henk Nieborg, Xeno Crisis, to be a vastly better game in every possible way. In that game you are constantly forced to be aware of what types of enemies are on screen and what they are doing in order to form on-the-fly tactics. I guess I was just expecting something somewhat similar here. :)

    Well you still have Super Rotation System, ghost piece and 7-bag randomizer so this still isn't really that faithful. If you really want to play Game Boy Tetris just play it on a Game Boy.

      Definitely not faithful at all. I'm not a fan of any of those two either. Game Boy Tetris is much more ruthless when you hit max speed, especially with the lack of entry delay and absurdly slow DAS. You pretty much need to stack as low as possible and hope for the best. And ruin your thumb with excessive tapping.

      Nope, I never did. Someone on ArcadeOtaku suggested it might be related to a custom IC located on one of the PCBs, so if that's the case there's no way to fix it without a donor cartridge. If you do learn anything new about the issue, please do let me know!

    That is some very nice work. I can appreciate the great effort it took to translate the Z80 to 6502. I'm doing the same thing right now for the 2015 DK Remix version to run on the Atari 7800. The 7800 graphics are powerful enough to not flicker with a large number of sprites, but the horizontal resolution isn't as good as the NES. I'm keeping the screen in landscape and have rearranged the score and bonus locations so that everything from Kong on down keeps the same proportions. I'm going thru the effort of translating the arcade code to keep the game mechanics exactly as the arcade.

    Great! While a pretty good conversion I always thought it looked awfully monochromatic. As a developer do you reckon it could have been done better? Even the pretty bad C64 version is more colorful and varied to look at.

      The palette is one of the NES's worst limitations. I think making games look better with the palette at your disposal is mostly a matter of artistic skill, rather than straight up engineering. I've seen hobbyist NES art that I, even as a developer, had a hard time believing actually adhered to the NES palette. I think especially the yellow'ish nuances look bad on NES, and tend to have a "puke" tint that's especially prevalent in this game. It doesn't really do warm orange/red'ish colors, which is a big part of TNZS - But even then I think a skilled artist could have probably made it looks better.

      I haven't worked on it since, outside of a bug fix on the high score saving. There are only two things I want to change on it, though. One being the alignment of the score pop-ups which I accidentally put one pixel to the side, and the other being preventing the hammer music from resetting after the smash sfx. Aside from those two things, the port is perfect as far as I'm aware :)

      @@sumez4369 Yes, it plays very nicely! :) I play it through my AVS (FPGA) system, which has the option to display extra sprites, which helps with the flickering, and I really enjoy it. The hammer music fix would be very helpful when judging when the hammer is about to run out. Just nitpicking here, but would it be possible to get the sound effects closer to the arcade? One sound that would be nice is the "squeaky sneaker sound" of Jumpman. I realize the arcade uses specialized analog hardware to achieve this, but would it be possible to have as a PCM sample? (Sorry, if this sounds like a noob question... I am a noob when it comes to programming games). Anyway, thanks again for making this. I bought a NES and Donkey Kong at launch, here in New York in 1985, and never dreamed I'd play a version of DK that is this arcade perfect. :)

      @@videogameobsession Yes, that's actually the idea behind the hammer music fix. :) If it wasn't essential to the gameplay, I wouldn't consider it. I agree that a few of the other sounds could be fixed as well, and it's something we have thought about (back when we actually thought of doing more to it). All the sounds were created by my friend Svavar, and he did a really outstanding job. They all had to be re-created by ear in Famitracker which can be very hard to do when the original game doesn't rely on the same PSG hardware, but uses all analog sound effects! We especially spent a lot of time trying to get a good, well fitting walking sound, since perfectly replicating the "squeeky shoes" didn't seem possible. IIRC there's also one of the jingles that's in the wrong key, and probably isn't too hard to fix, but I'm not really knowledgeable about music. The game uses two PCM samples, namely DK's "laugh" and the sound when he's banging his chest (the deep bassy sound would be impossible to make with just the PSG channels), and I think choosing those two sounds for samples was the best choice. They also take up a massive portion of the ROM space which I intentionally wanted to keep limited to the original 40KB available on old school mapper-less NES PCBs (the game "cheats" by still using on-board RAM though).
