How to Brew Back-to-Basics French Press Coffee
I don't get how these 1-3 pour recipes get such flat beds? I tried this 3 times in a row and despite swirling the coffee bed was never flat and started creating a cone. I tried swirling more and swirling less, whats the deal?
Hey. I don’t have this issue but I wonder if maybe grinding a little more coarsely would help. I always have a “wet sand” look to my bed when it’s finished. Let me know what you find.
Just bought one!
Nice, Micah. You won’t be disappointed!
Ok but how do you keep towel from smelling after so many times cleaning it. No matter how many times I rinse my towel , it stinks so much once it dries.
I usually only use it for 3 days and then wash or grab a new one.
Thanks!!!
Happy to help. ✌🏼
I love Wilfa, he is a great, reliable worker. But I don't grind espresso on it.
Fair enough!
Out-gassing of CO2 from roasted beans will increase air pressure inside the canister negating your vacuum. If the pump is coming on to correct the vacuum, that’s a good thing and doesn’t need to be “fixed”!
Yeah, you’re correct. I wasn’t clear. It was turning on will the lid was sitting on my counter, off the container itself.
Cheers, I liked the tips you gave along the way, I’m relatively new to making coffee
My pleasure. Good luck on your journey.
I just tried this😂😂 I just can’t express how thankful I am!! FINALLY iced coffee made simple 😎 I have been desperately trying to to decide what to do ever since the charge cord to my Homstan iced coffee machine broke 😫 I really hate waiting 12 to 24 hours plus I just like to have some fresh… NOW! Thanks so much for your simple informative video😊😄😎
Happy to help, Francine. ✌🏼
I happened to use the one I got for my homebrewing. It will measure to 0.01g as that's a requirement for a lot of my brewing chemicals if I'm scaling a recipe. Just because it was on hand, I've been using it. Downside is that it's not very water resistant, and over time the LCD tends to get a bit dim, but otherwise, it's $20 and is calibratable; i.e. you can calibrate to reference weights to ensure accuracy. I've never had an issue with latency on my shot pulls, similarly I am consistent to within about 0.05g shot to shot.
Glad to hear it! I have a Jennings 4000g capacity scale that I bought when I first started making coffee. It’s ugly and missing buttons and only goes to a .5g but it still works for cooking and baking.
The main thing that may break your requirements is this one only goes up to 500g. However, for espresso I've not run into any limitations there. And there's no timing feature as this is mainly marketed for jewelry and cooking. something to really drive home for the home user though, it's super easy to get bogged down into accuracy and trying to maximize your precision. But I've found that consistency is more key than the precision and accuracy. So even if this scale were somehow wildly off, it's consistently off.
@@DGPHolyHandgrenade That's a great point. Consistency is key. I've gone down the super accuracy and optimized brew path and banged my head into a wall over and over. Then I learned not to let perfect be the enemy of pretty dang good.
This video perfectly embodies why Acaia ends up being the only dependable option. RUclips recommends this video to me, it’s basically a sell for zero hero which I have never heard of before. Cool. Click the Amazon link and oh surprise, turns out nobody else has either. Junk reviews and I’m click funneled into all the other Amazon suggestions for $50 scales with questionable reviews and I’m back to looking at Acaia again knowing I’m just going to have to bite the bullet because apparently small reliable scales are ridiculously hard.
It’s a sell for any scale that is pretty darn good that doesn’t break your bank account on features most people don’t need in most cases. I have Acaia, Jennings, Hario, zerohero, and previously had the other scales. I test and consider the end-users needs before I recommend things. I wouldn’t tell the casual espresso enthusiast to buy the E65S I have but would recommend the X54 or Vario.
$12 is literally all you need - my does time, grams or ounces and 10th of gram - everything more expensive is a scam
Which scale are you using?
IMO there's a few more elements to consider when buying a scale that you didn't mention: 1. Low latency. Many cheaper scales (~$20) will have 0.1g accuracy, but often they'll be super slow to update measurements. Some scales update only every second or half second, which could result in a delay of up to 10+ grams once you stop the shot. Of course, you could manually compensate for this by stopping the shot early, but that's inherently error prone. 2. Ergonomics. Having a scale that you can pick up and move without accidentally pressing a button is important. Some scales, like the Timemore Black Mirror Nano, put their capacitive buttons in awkward places that makes them hard to use and difficult to move. 3. Water resistance. This is more of a "nice to have" than a necessity, but if you're spending a lot of money on a coffee scale you might as well spend just a bit more to get one that won't break if you spill coffee all over it.
100% agree with those additions. Thanks.
I have a scale for pour overs from hero company it is high quality and way cheaper
I’m a big fan of zeroHero.
@@therobmcgee yep
I like the accuracy and build quality. But now there are better options.
Yeah for me I have the lunar and never used the app only for updating the firmware.
Crazy, right?
@@therobmcgee because at that time lunar was #1 now maybe bottom of the list 🤣 due to many competitors
Respect to those who take the time to do a thing well- he seems like that kind of guy. I don't quite have the patience, but respect for those who do.
Thank you.
Excellent video! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks, Dave!
When someone makes coffee based on taste then he is simply telling his story instead of how it should be done.
To a certain extent, yes, but I think there are some basic qualities like clarity, sweetness, strength, and mouthfeel that can be generalized and communicated.
Thank you for this video. Works really well 😊
My pleasure.
Thank you Rob 😍
You’re welcome!
OkThe most important thing is the water temperature. I use whatever Columbian roast that I have a digital coupon for. Medium grind. By making sure that the water temperature is 200-205 F I get a damned fine cuppa coffee. Also the coffee to water ratio makes a big difference but that has more to do with personal preference as the ratio affects the strength and not so much the flavor.
Truth
I want a video just about latte art.
“A lot of people want a lot of things”
Milk is a *good* choice. 🥛
Beautiful machines beautiful review thank you very much❤ I have some question how much do steamer should be I use C/elsius and how much the machine the water should be thank you very much🙏
Thank you. I will double check later today and will get back with you.
Ok so the brew boiler is 96c and the steam boiler is 126c. Great results with both. I use a medium roast espresso. If I was doing dark roast I would drop it down a few degrees. The steamer “could” be lowered a few degrees as well if you wanted to.
@@therobmcgee thanks bro appreciate it.. 🙏🙏 I'm sure that you work with the mini you think the machine that we have better? I can still change that to the mini if I want...
I wouldn't change to the mini. The GS3 brew boiler is much bigger and the steam wand is bigger and more flexible. The mini is great, but you'd be downgrading.
@@therobmcgee thanks very much bro thank you I stay with this machine in the right side front of the machine Dove some option for button I see some video that you can have it to make the water more strong something like that I don't know
I’m planning on starting a coffee cart. I heard mixed reviews about using this machine because of the high volume of customers. What’s your take on that?
Dude, if you’re plumbed in using the flojet it rips insanely consistent shots for hours on end. We’ve done 9am-3pm events with a non-stop line without issue. AV over MP for carts 100%. Plus the You and Mini don’t have the same horse power.
@@therobmcgee thanks bro I have the same machine la marzocco gs3 Av I hope it's better from the Mini 🤦 or the mini better than her what do you think? And don't forget to give me the which number the steamer C and the Machine boiler
I agree with @therobmcgee , the GS/3 packs some serious horsepower, this is one of it's main points over the competition. It will keep pulling shots and steaming milk as fas as you can tell it to. You can really stand it on it's head.
Just tried this … mine tastes slightly burned.. what did I do wrong lol
Are you using a dark roast? I would add just a bit more water when brewing to see if that helps.
Use luke warm / tap water on your grounds before you add the hot water, make sure they’re all covered (like a slurry) and let that sit for about 30 seconds. Then add your hot water. This will help stop the burned taste. A lot of people overlook this! Really helps.
👆🏻Doing the lord’s work in the comments
Hi, Just got a french press. This looks very doable. BUT - the amounts. Calculating grams to tablespoons - 1 tbspn is like 14 grams. So isn't it more like 4 tablespoons? and 400 grams is about 1 2/3 cup right?
Hi - Good question. Depending on the coffee and grind size, it can vary. I would try it out with 4 tablespoons and the 1 and 2/3 cup and if that tastes good to you, roll with it. If you need it stronger you can always add more coffee.
wouldn't this break the glass pot?
No because the ice cools the hot coffee so quickly.
@@therobmcgee cool! Thanks so much for this video, will definitely be trying it out 😁
@@lalibi3182 You got it. Good luck!
How many oz of cold brew concentrate would you add for a 16oz cup?
I would start with 4oz since you are mixing with milk and chocolate and adjust for your tastes from there.
brilliant! my question is what is the water-coffee ratio if I use a 12oz or a 20oz carafe
I would try 3 tbsp coffee for 12oz and 5 for 20oz. Adjust to your tastes from there.
Can you store this in the fridge for iced coffees
You can, but you should check out my iced coffee with a french press video!
You must stand on 1 leg and wear a tin foil hat for pour over coffee.
Wrong. You have to levitate.
Love this! thank you!
You’re welcome!
It is recommended to apply sunscreen even if you’re home the whole day. Sun is harmful even inside your home. So it shouldn’t be transparent. Not everything in your home what made of brown or green colored glass is for outdoor use. It degrades.
Not so sure about that. That said, I think I have some research to do.
It's clear! Light degrades coffee.
From what I understand, it’s UV that can harm coffee, and UV doesn’t penetrate windows much if at all. So, as long as you’re not keeping it direct sunlight, it doesn’t matter.
@@therobmcgee thanks
I think vacuum starting randomly is the auto vacuum function running to maintain the vacuum
Yeah, you’re right. I realized I didn’t clarify and that it’s when it’s not on the container when it auto-accuates.
One question. Why is it transparent.
Because if you’re not setting it in sunlight it won’t matter.
I came looking for a recipe and got jumpscared by the Blueprint Coffee bag!! They make awesome coffee!
That they do!
Thank you so much for this!! We usually do the cold brew method, but ran out and were desperate for coffee lol
That’s what I’m here for.
For me, 85C / 185F works best (same as ideal aeropress temperature)
What type of roast level do you prefer at those temps?
Love the recipe and am trying this. Sick of overspending at Starbucks. An important component is that ice though. What the restaurants have over us is that clear ice with their machines and it does affect the taste. Need to either make clear ice or get a machine at home.
True. Good ice makes all the difference.
I got you! my bf wanted that clear ice so I got one of those pitchers with the brita filter in the lid. I put that in ice trays.. I used to have a little mini machine from amazon for about 130 but they break down a lot and I could only repair it myself the first few times. You could put filtered water in those as well.. Also you can technically unhook the water in your fridge and fill the reservoir but I'm not confident.
Thank you for the recipe, I just bought a french press and am gojng to try this out!
Awesome. I think you'll be happy with the results.
This guy is a chemist definitely trying this method
Thanks!
I loved everything about this
Compared to dumping coffee in a Melita cone filter and pouring the water in all at once and then letting it drain, is this really a noticeable difference in taste flavor aroma? Does the answer change with lighter roasted coffee vs darker roasts? Thanks for your response.
There's only one way for you to find out.
Is it always the best move to grind it for coarse? I see alot of suggestions for a grind size of medium-coarse for french press. Thoughts?
I see those as well. I generally like the results I get with coarse, but I think a little testing (by either of us) would be worthwhile.
As a French user, I find that you press a little too quickly. Apart from that, the explanations are perfect.
It's because my arms are so heavy from all the muscles.
My grinder was a gift. I am so very sad. It simply does not work. No connection at all . Plugged in or not plugged in, there is no differnce. There is no connection. It simply does not work. As a gift, I have no idea where to go or what to do. It just sits on my kitchen counter and is never used because it simply does not work.
If you reach out to Fellow, I bet they help you get a replacement.
Refreshing to see a sensible guide for FP after watching a butt-ton of crazily complex ones!
We do what we can. Glad it was helpful.
Yeah, the usual coffee videos on RUclips feature someone with huge glasses, repeatedly saying "literally" and giving us an unwanted history lesson
I was searching for how to vids for pour over and lo and behold, up pops yours, my friend! Small world! Hope you're well!
Why hello. Hope it helped. Holler next time you're in town.
After that great cup of coffee, you have a big freakin' mess to clean up. No thanks.
There's literally no mess. Dump grounds in trash and wash the FP.
