Robert Stevens Makes a Promotional Film for Railways And Steam Locomotives Featuring a Railway Rap

This video answers the question of what might have happened if color and sound motion picture film existed in 1831, and the father and son railroad pioneers John Stevens and Robert Stevens, along with their engineer, Isaac Dripps, made a promotional film to advertise railroads, and also if they used rap music as part of their film. Admittedly this is a rather unlikely hypothetical situation to ...

No worries. We took some video, and I may turn it into a RUclips video soon! I'll see you at another Civil War event in the future.
@@mr.roywulf ok

Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it.
Hey this is Henry on a different account, thank you so much for helping me with reenacting a joining a unit I’ll see you tomorrow for the second day of Gettysburg
@@Sporty2.0 You are very welcome. It will be fun tomorrow!
Hi Roy, I don’t know if you remember me but are you going to the Gettysburg reenactment?
Oh yes, very good to hear from you. Yes, I will be at the Battle of Gettysburg reenactment this coming weekend at the Daniel Lady Farm. I will be the bugler for the 2nd Regiment Federal Volunteer Brigade (FVB), and I will be setting up my field music tent near the FVB Headquarters. Do you plan to come to the reenactment perhaps?
By the way, I will be marching in the Fairfax Parade tomorrow (July 4th). The parade starts at 10am, and I'll be near the front of the parade playing bagpipes in my World War I uniform.

@@mr.roywulf nah man I’m just joking, it seems like you read off a script that’s all
@@Wake-up90 Oh, I thought that maybe I looked AI-generated or something! LOL. The video was unscripted, but I thought up things to say before I filmed each segment. I'm not always smooth talking in front of a camera, but I manage to get a good take on the fourth or fifth attempt. The one scripted thing was repeating Chamberlain's speech from the film 'Gods and Generals'.
One good method is to row to the tune Bully boys by Nathan Evans or if you seen the old Moby Dick movie dead whale or a stove boat

The "pop culture" phenomenon of our country was allowed into the Sacred Liturgy of our Catholic faith starting in the mid 1960's, as you perfectly pointed out. How the church fathers allowed this to happen is astounding and sad, and a subject for further discussion and research. I was in high school during the change and was devastated how most of my friends stopped going to church (including myself). The "guitar" mass and the "kumbaya" masses were wretched and folksy. It felt terribly irreverent. We thought, "What about the `Real Presence`...the Latin was gone. Sacred Tradition was brushed aside. It was to be in the spirit of "ecumenism" we were told. (We all felt we heard snickering from the protestant churches.) I presently sing (Chant) with a schola in SE Pennsylvania and the solemn high Mass is a blessing to me and my family. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK YOU'RE DOING, ROY...God Bless You. AMDG.
Yes, you are right that replacing traditional music with popular music didn't even win over "the youth" it was designed to win over. By the time the Church implemented the change, because tastes in music are so fleeting, that pop music was unpopular. Chant has no meter so it is perfect for enhancing prayer as any words can be chanted. By contrast, other music has meter and lyrics must rhyme, so it is necessary to change the words for that to happen. Thank you for lending your voice to your local scola. Traditional music will win out in the long run (but perhaps it will be a very, very long run before it does)! God bless!
My late husband, Frank Edgar Ragland, 1921-2018 was on these ships, I believe.
Although the original Monitor sank about a year after it was built, there were other ships of that type built. The last one was the USS Wyoming that was scrapped in 1939. As for the Constellation, it was decommissioned in 1933 but then recommissioned in 1940. It was used as a reserve flagship for a number of commanders. It was finally decommissioned in 1955, but then eventually became a museum ship in Baltimore. Yes, Frank E. Ragland could certainly have been on such ships. I thank him for his service to our country!

Yes, you have heard correctly. Reenacting is a wonderful hobby. It combines history, enjoying the outdoors, and making friends. In our case, we do a lot with historical music too. There is a bit of an initial investment in order to get outfitted in a uniform, but units sometimes have loaner uniform parts and gear. Here's a transcription of the "The Miracle of Steam Engines: Rap." Robert Stevens Makes a Promotional Film for Railways and Steam Locomotives Featuring a Railway Rap. Rap: Introduction: "Well, hello there, this is the old steam wagon built by my Father John Stevens. We built it back in, uh, 1825 to show Governor DeWitt Clinton that railroads were better than canals, and it worked. "Just an experiment back then, but it was the first locomotive on track in the United States. It was a humble beginning; we laid a track of a mere 660 ft just in the front yard of our home and proved with the steam wagon that steam transportation on land was feasible." Background: "Our inspiration for the steam wagon were the early locomotives built by British inventor Richard Price in England some 20 years before. He wanted to use them in mining operations." "So, the boiler is up there and here's the barrel to supply the water to the boiler and here's the engine of the mighty steam wagon with the Piston that drives the gear." "With the concept proven with our steam wagon, we are now moving forward to establish an actual railroad. We have purchased from the famous Robert Stevenson, inventor of the locomotive, the Rocket, an excellent locomotive called the John Bull. It is named after the fictional character used to represent England." "Our new railroad is the Camden and Amboy; it will connect Camden and New Jersey across from Philly all the way up to Amboy in New Jersey just across from New York City. The locomotive itself was shipped from England in parts." "I'm so proud of our engineer Isaac Dripps, who had never seen a full-sized locomotive in his life, yet he was able to assemble the John Bull in just 10 days. I'm sure there was a part or two that he didn't know where to put, but I'm sure it won't make any difference." "We've even made some safety Innovations; we've created something that we call the cow catcher. But it's not mainly for moving livestock off the tracks; the cow catcher actually has guide wheels that keep the train from derailing. We might one day even add brakes." "The big day came, and we could finally fire up the boiler on a foggy morning. We took the John Bull out on our newly laid track. Our boiler is rated for 70 PSI, who usually operated around 50 PSI. My father's dream was always to have a locomotive that would operate at 100 PSI and be able to travel at 100 mph. We aren't quite there yet; we travel about 25 to 30 mph." "We plan to have several dignitaries, including Napoleon's nephew, Prince Murat, on the John Bull. We wanted to name the engine Stevens, but the crews called it the Old John Bull and the name stuck." "Well, it's very simple really; we just take an ordinary hammer like this, you know any hammer will work, and we just go to the boiler like this, just give a little rap on the boiler. And you know, we do this so much sometimes we make music out of it; we call it rap music. And actually, recently my father and his engineer Isaac Dripps were making a song of this rap music to publicize our railroad." Rap: Opening: "Isaac, sounds like a telegraph, holy whack steamless carriages, Stevens, you're right. Team steam white, let's go! Stevens! Ladies and gentlemen, it's showtime, hurry hurry, step right up, introducing the star of our show, his name is Stevens! "You wouldn't want to be anywhere else in the world right now. So, without further ado, I bring you, Stevens!" Main Part: You're about to witness transport in the most quickest, most cheapest form, of steaming, most versatile, most spacious, almost flawless, push off the canal boats." "Yeah, old steam is back, looks like Robert Fulton can't keep up with the track. Oh, New York with DeWitt Clinton, got his own Eerie Canal, he has his own funding, got his own state for his morale. McCormick is the plow, farmed fields terrain and grain, looks like stable crop production might make it rain." "But America's in for a shock in 1825 with a steam-powered invention that will thrive, chug chug, yeah I'm in my prime. "Let's get down, the railroads. America don't got no time play around. What is this? Must be a train in town, it's moving our loads, not exploding steamboats. Can I get a witness?" "Let's get down, the railroads. America, don't got no time to wait for wagons. What is this? Must be a train in town, needs no dirt roads, and like unlike bumpy slowed carriages, can I get a witness?" "Look at all the traffic on canals and roads that delays the travelers in America, but railroads do be going everywhere. It's the solution, yeah duh. So over the mountains, through the field, Stevens will do it best. We need his steam travel; yeah, sharks you should invest." "Railroads are profits on wheels without any limit. Steamboats, canals, wagons, roads, too confined, so forget it. We're the cheapest one, but that doesn't make us slow. Heck, we're actually faster and even carry more tons of cargo." "It just costs so much less and makes investors so much more. Millions will be taking trains from Ohio to Baltimore." "Let's get down, the railroads. America don't got no time to play around. What is this? Must be a train in town, it's moving our loads, not exploding steamboats, can I get a witness?" "Let's get down, the railroads America, don't have time. You know you should patent and invest in our tracks; it's not only steam but money that the Great Union Railroad stacks." "Look at all the traffic on canals and roads that delays the travelers in America, but railroads do be going everywhere. It's the solution, yeah duh. Evidently transportation across the Union will always last. Sharks choose railroads for an alternative that is 10 times more fast." "Yeah, you know you should patent and invest in our tracks. It's not only steam but money that the great Union railroad stacks." Outro: "So there you have it folks, Stevens has come to save the day, back with his friend Isaac Dripps. You know one day we might have a Transcontinental Railroad that would connect the country." "It would mean that we could have large scale agriculture, Idaho Potato Farmers could bring their potatoes all the way to the East, Orange farmers in Florida could spread their oranges across the country, more food for me, for you, for brother, and for sister. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it's true, railroads will revolutionize life. One day we will have railroads with 100 PSI." Closing: "Oh well, the song ended ladies and gentlemen. Well, that's a wrap, this Robert Stevens fellow with his steamboats; he's of menace to river navigation." Credits: Thanks to the Railroad Musuem of Pennsylvania! By: Jahan Humenik, Koen Fredericks, and Roy Wulf.

@@mr.roywulf Also, any advice on fifing would be greatly appreciated.
@@sp00k48 I'll see if I can find time to get around to posting some videos about that.
I'd highly urge you to get a pair of good quality pair of period suspenders, as the ones you wore in this video are inaccurate. Aside from that, your overall impression is pretty good.
Yes, I agree. I bought my suspenders at a sutler, but I didn't realize that they were not accurate. A new pair are on my to-buy list! Tell me, is there a particular maker of suspenders that you would recommend?
So proud of our PVI Student Roy...informative presentation & with relevance to Catholic education.
Merci beaucoup, Madame Hansberger!! Je vous remercie encore d'être venu à ma présentation! C'était incroyable pendant mes recherches de trouver beaucoup de connexions françaises dans l'histoire de la musique sacrée de l'Église Catholique.
Soli Deo Gloria!!!! And Roy, your work most certainly glorifies God!!! I'm so proud of you!!!
Ut in omnibus glorificetur Deus! I am so glad you enjoyed, Mrs. Gurley! I feel so blessed to be in the true Church that happens to have the most beautiful Sacred Music!
Damn, how'd you manage to get a harpsichord!
That was by miraculous good fortune. The school I used to attend is run by the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia who recently built a new monastery. They held a big sale of items from the old monastery, and I was amazed to see that this harpsichord was among the things being sold. Because they know me well, they sold it to my family at a very modest price. I promised to play it for them after getting it repaired, which I did! The harpsichord was fixed by Mark Adler of Cembaloworks in Gaithersburg, MD. My harpsichord is small enough to haul around in the back of our minivan, so I have even played it out at Mount Vernon!
@@mr.roywulfInteresting, thank you for the information!
@@sp00k48 You're welcome!
Hey, you uploaded again!
And more will be coming along. I will post videos whenever I get a chance to do so! 🙂
Where did you get the cornet, and where could I get one?
This Eb cornet is an actual period musical instrument. It was expensive unfortunately, but worth it. I got it from a private individual who collects period instruments. This configuration (with the bell pointing backward) is called 'over the shoulder' or 'OTS'. There are also bell forward (like a modern cornet) and circular (with the bell pointing upward). I just talked to lots of people involved in historical brass until I found someone willing to sell a horn from their collection.
Alright, thank you for the response! I'm quite interested in the idea of owning a period cornet myself. Would you happen to have any contact information or know of any resources where I could find individuals who collect or sell similar instruments? I'd greatly appreciate any guidance or assistance you could provide in my search. Thank you again for your insight!
@@sp00k48 There are a number of people to contact to start asking around. For example, there is Mark Metzler of Metzler Brass in Elkhart, IN. The website is www.metzlerbrass.com/. He repairs such instruments, so he might have suggestions for you about where to find a horn to buy.
Nicely done, young man! Thank you! :)
Mr. Dobbs, it was an honor and a privilege to participate with you at this event. You do a great job portraying a fascinating and controversial personality from history!
