    Hi Dale. 800 albums in the inbox? That's not too bad. If you play one of them a week, you'll have caught up in about 2040 ... I tend not to bother much with car boot sales, record fairs, online purchases and used record shops. Charity shops are my weakness ... Nina Simone was at her best live. A mesmerising performer. I love 'Wild Is The Wind' ... Some fabulous finds for £2 or less ... I'm a big fan of a UK emo band called Spy Versus Spy from the late 1990's. I have a CD of their complete discography, and also a CD by a later band with ex-members called Future Adventures. Really impressive and influential stuff. I never realised there was another band with a similar name in the 80's playing power pop with chiming guitars ... Castanets sounds interesting. I'll be giving them a listen on RUclips. All the best.

    Nice finds, Dale. I didn’t know any of these until you came onto Ted Hawkins. I picked this up in a lot a while back and have really enjoyed it. Like you say, it’s great picking up records that way as you get to discover albums you wouldn’t choose normally. Some score on the Pills Thrills… fantastic album! If you haven’t already, check out Ted Hawkins’ backstory… guy had it rough! Cheers, Jack

    To hear Nina w/ Just a trio is the best ! I will keep a look out for that LP. The 3 Kings.. I have to collect them all ! BB and Freddie.. and Albert ! Killer Taste find.. Congrats on that one 👍And Creative Source, I hope to find a well ! Ted Hawkins is the real deal, for sure and what a find with Happy Mondays ! Castanets.. I just listened to "You Are The Blood" I love indie bands, so many good ones to get into !

    Never knew Taste included saxophone in their recordings. At school I had a friend who loved Rory Gallagher so I absorbed a lot of his solo LPs, but not Taste. Nice find. I can’t get to any car boot sales so am always intrigued to see what bargains can be (sometimes) be found.

      Hi John - What I didn't appreciate, otherwise I'd have mentioned, was that Rory was the saxophonist himself! Apparently he was pretty accomplished player...cheers Dale

    Excellent finds Dale. I'm sort of collecting BB King records (in the sense that I always buy them when I see them), but given that I only find one every five years or so it's never likely to be even half-complete. Don't think I've ever seen a Taste album in the flesh. Maybe we all come to the saxophone eventually.

    • @gatefold33
      @gatefold33 7 дней назад

      Hi James - I just checked and BB King had just over 50 studio albums I think...you might need to up the frequency...Yes the saxophone will strike eventually...cheers Dale

    Lots of bargains there Dale. Stand out for me is the Taste album. That’s great you’ve been tracking it down for a while and it appeared for a great price. I’d imagine it’s quite rare. Also nice been of blues, sone great iconic guitarists there. I was in Winchester today and bought a bunch from Paul Green in the market. Mike

    Hi Dale. Nice car boot finds! It took me years to find the Creative Source album. Worth it for the version of @Who Is He…” alone 16:04 . I enjoyed the Ted Taylor album when I first heard it but his story put me off the music. It’s one I ended up selling. Keep the car boot finds coming!

    Hi Dale me too good intentions to make lots of videos, to pick up those for pound or two is far more fun than splashing out in shops and fairs. I'm still laid back here too though did pick up a ton from marketplace in the week with disappointing results on the whole. Hi Dale, I'm afraid I can't resist the record fairs (but then we have nowt else here in West Cumbria) - we used to go to just the one every other month (Kendal), but now we go to Windermere which is every month, and Carlisle which has just recently started up again. So sometimes we have 3 in a month - though this month only the one (Windermere tomorrow). So my in box is chock full too. I've wanted to try out some Nina Simone for a while. My friend has just given me a two-fer CD of hers (Forbidden Fruit & Sings Ellington) but I've not yet had a chance to listen to it. I like my electric blues but I have to admit I've never really taken to BB King - too soulful and smooth and not hard enough for me I guess. The Live Taste album is currently sitting in my inbox. Never heard of Castanets, but they sound interesting - will give them a listen. Cheers... Pete

    Apologies Dale for taking so long to get to this video. Sorry to see the break in making these Lost in the Collection videos but anything from you is enjoyable. I was thinking that I should nick the idea and go back into my collection for some videos rather than just new pick ups, but my problem is I buy too many so It's all I can do to keep up with the recent additions. I'm with you - like Tim Buckley's voice and music, but not a fan of Jeff Buckley. I like the Steamhammer LP - it's the only one I have on vinyl, but I do prefer their last couple of albums which moved more into a heavy krautrock style. Would like to get that version of the Trader Horne album - really nice album. I bought So on CD back in the day, it was OK but not up to what he had done before for me, so I've never bothered with anything he did post that album. But I've not listened to it in so many years so I probably should revisit it to see if I still feel the same way. We're still waiting for summer up here in Cumbria! All the best... Pete

It is a shame that your Work Commitments mean a pause in the series. Rufus Wainwright is another. Although, I can listen to early Leonard Cohen without thinking his voice is whiny. Cheers - Hed

    Quality ramble. Nuff said. Think I'd miss Leonard Cohen's voice doing his songs it's just so unique not that I like it all. I came home in an odd mood the other day I often ponder culls and listened to hex (a repress cost me about 20£ dramatically up in price) by bark psychosis very undecided about was it good or not. Rambling, discordant at times. I don't think summer music necessarily suits the summer to me. Too predictable. Fruit flying around Peter Gabriel's head again oh dear.

I agree Morning Glory is a stunningly beautiful song..although I am quite selective with Tim Buckley..I loved his reading of Fred Neils' Dolphins. I don't own any Buzzcocks, I would buy them if I saw them, but I don't sadly. That Otis and Carla album is OK, my copy isn't great sounding, so I don't enjoy playing it. Most people online seemed to think RSD was good this year, but for me not so. I only picked up one item - post the actual day - and that proved to be a big mistake! Hello Dale. I love the esoteric "music" you present. You definitely have your own corner on the VC, where your Bandcamp and other choices always intrigue. Invensions For Radio sounds fascinating. It clearly owes something to Ewan MacColl and Charles Parker's late 50s Radio Ballads. I was familiar with Barry Bermange's name as a writer of radio plays, after coming across him during the research for my masters thesis. But I wasn't able to source any of his plays. I'm not sure if by the time of the early 60s if the division in the BBC between the Radio Drama and Features department was still in place. Generally the output from both was very different, but at times the Drama department felt they were having their toes trodden on. Perhaps one of the best known BBC radio play productions is Dylan Thomas' Under Milkwood broadcast in 1954, was actually a product of the Features department. I know the Radio Ballads was also a product of the Features Department, so it would be safe to assume Invensions For Radio also was. I did find a reference to Invensions For Radio in the book, British Radio Drama, but it's not a glowing endorsement. David Wade writes of the use of the Radiophonic Workshop in practice; "Radiophonics is, or ought to be, an immensely powerful aid to certain kinds of imaginative, invisible drama - creation sounds that never were to evoke worlds that might be; yet it has proved extremely difficult to produce convincing results, and this seems to be chiefly because electronic sound, being itself artificial, tends to dehumanise. This was apparent even in such remarkable features of the early sixties as Barry Bermange's Invensions For Radio, where a background of electronic sound set against snatches of recorded interview,though spellbinding to begin with, gradually bled the human voices of all meaning." We'll, there you go. I'm sure you might have a counter take, probably as your interest is primarily the landscapes. Or do you? As someone whose interest in Radio Drama waned after spending the best part of eighteen months listening to, researching and writing about radio plays a features, I'm not sure if I'd take to these Invensions For Radio? Sorry of the info dump, but I thought you might find it if interest. Cheers - Hedley

    • @gatefold33
      @gatefold33 Месяц назад

      Hi Hedley - great insight, thanks for taking the time to capture it, very interesting. I guess I would add two points to what was said at the time. 1. The music was in its infancy then and has influenced the development of modern electronic music since, so I think fair to regard it in that light. Maybe also there was a snobbishness about this crude approach elbowing out the more established, and costly, orchestras. 2. On the radio show itself, as well as the Radiophonic Workshop connection, I think it also has the added benefit of being a time capsule of social history now. This might add some importance now, compared to when it was just another contemporary piece of art...cheers Dale

    There is no record store that does RSD any more in Bakersfield. So skipping RSD has been made easy for me. Inventions For Radio sounds like a one time listen for me. Two at most. Similar to how I feel about comedy or spoken word releases. There were a few RSD releases that I was interested in. I only picked up one, Wall Of Voodoo Live. This release is not only good but I think the best RSD release I have ever picked up.

    Nice pick ups Dale. Interesting to hear you explain about the Delia Derbyshire recordings..as you say, a cultural as opposed to musical experience. Never really listened to Camera Obscura, I should remedy that. All the best Rob.

    Good to see you back. I went to Hundred n the Sunday & picked up 300% Dynamite, Mark had pretty much sold. everything else I thought the Beth Gibbons single was incredible , but the album isn’t quite doing it for me at the moment, just streaming it. I own nothing by Harmonium..must arrest that!

    Find that mojo Dale! I had just seen that Harmonia album and was wondering what it is about Krautrock. The cover design had grabbed my attention on it. I will have to stream some of that

    I've followed Camera Obscura too. All things considered, I really wanted to like this new one, but I thought it pretty weak. The song writing sub par and the new keyboardist is no Carey Lander, who I reckoned was pivotal for the direction and sound of the band.

      Interesting you think it's weak, I wasn't getting that...I'll have to see how it stands-up over a few years to be really certain I guess...I know I don't revisit Desire Lines as much as the earlier albums...

    Nice pick ups Dale. That "Inventions For Radio" sounds right up my alley. A nice companion piece for the RSD Radiophonics Workshop CD boxset you mentioned. I've listened to a few clips on youtube. Very interesting!

    Good to see you Dale. I really dig Harmonia's "Musik Von H" Reworks. I was lucky to find an original copy of the 74 release on Brain a few years back for $65. I think the price went up a bit since then. I did not even know the album when I bought it. Someone in the VC showed it about twelve years ago. How does it sound overall? Going to check out the Camera Obscura album. Thanks a lot D~ Rob/Boston

      Hi Rob - Well done on finding an OG press of the Harmonia album, I'm not sure I've ever seen one. I have a couple of original UK Can albums and I had to pay a pretty penny for those...I hope you enjoy Camera Obscura...

    Hi Dale. I was only thinking this morning that you’ve been slacking with the VC videos recently. You need to do a few lunges to get yourself back in the swing of it. Nice pick ups. The CD that you showed sounds fascinating. Can you imagine the excitement of finding old tapes in Delia Derbyshire’s loft? It’s amazing that she clearly didn’t feel that there was any cultural value in the tapes. I’ll have to see if I can get a copy of the CD. Cheers

    I'm sure that I will like Camera Obscura.. Will listen in a bit. Martin Barre's 1st album with Tull, he loves.. "Look Into The Sun" 😊 I was lucky to pick up The Blue Nile at Bill's during last winter. Sandy Denny is amazing, and I am on a Judee Sill kick as of late. "Oh Mercy" is so so good ! Now see, there you go.. Traffic ! This is why I like you, Dale ! Haha Thanks for mentioning "Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory" .. Evening Blue comes to mind. I need to revisit "Misplaced Childhood" Good ones ! Cheers from Nevada

    What is this VG bloody + all about? it drives me mad. Surely that makes it Excellent. Surely VG+ is the same as EX-, where does it end? EX++ is therefore better than mint, thats not possible.

      Thanks for the comment. It's a minefield, especially as the US and UK seem to have different systems. If I recall, this video was value according to Discogs and they use VG / VG+ / NM / M steps. Me I use both VG+ and Ex for my collection! But I suppose as long as I know the difference...
