The early Tull stuff is very good. That Blue Nile, Sandy D and even the Dylan are good albums to revisit. That was the last Dylan album that I listened to. I was not let down. I like the variety. Well done and thanks for sharing your revisit Dale~

Hi Rob, Oh Mercy doesn't let me down when I play it. It's a Dylan album I can reach for when I'm not sure what Dylan I want to hear...

I'm sure that I will like Camera Obscura.. Will listen in a bit. Martin Barre's 1st album with Tull, he loves.. "Look Into The Sun" 😊 I was lucky to pick up The Blue Nile at Bill's during last winter. Sandy Denny is amazing, and I am on a Judee Sill kick as of late. "Oh Mercy" is so so good ! Now see, there you go.. Traffic ! This is why I like you, Dale ! Haha Thanks for mentioning "Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory" .. Evening Blue comes to mind. I need to revisit "Misplaced Childhood" Good ones ! Cheers from Nevada

Hi George, great you got to see Blue Nile live. I imagine they could put on a really atmospheric performance.

I think that I have heard you talk about Camera Obscura before and I still need to check them out. I was just playing that Bob Dylan on my recent road trip and I realized how much I loved the album as well. Swordfishtrombones is probably in my top five Waits albums too. You had some great relistens this episode. Take care.

Hi,Chris here(I share an email address with my wife). Love your channel but don't think I've ever felt like commenting before. Surely The Go-Betweens deserve a mention, near perfect at the old 5 and 5. Thanks to you I pulled out my Camera Obscura albums which I haven't listened to in a while. A real treat.

Hi Chris, comments are my favourite part of making videos, so glad you decided to make one. Go-betweens certainly fit into the category perfectly. I only have three of their albums, with '16 Lovers Lane' being my favourite. That's 5+5 and 37 minutes so would definitely scrape into the range. Cheers Dale

It's an interesting concept for a video, although I have to say that I don't have a preference for album length, so long as it holds my attention.
Amarok by Mike Oldfield is 1 hour exactly and can hold my interest as a single song if I'm in the mood.
Some great titles Dale, Sandy is my favourite of hers.
Stand Up is far less Bluesy than the debut after Mick Abrahams departure and sets the template for Anderson going forward into the 70s..Beautiful songs like Wait for The Sun and We Used to Know.
I have Moonshine and enjoy it, although I've not played it that much.
A Walk Across The Rooftops is a very atmospheric listen and works well with longer tracks.
Agreed Oh Mercy! is a terrific album, Man in the Long Black Coat is one of my favourite Dylan songs.
    All the best.
    Rob.

Thanks Rob, I do enjoy Tull's debut but agree they progressed further as they moved forwards, right up to the late 70s. The first two Blue Nile albums are highlights in my collection...enjoy the weekend

Hi Dale - I think you and Rob are both correct. When CDs emerged, I was happy with the added length, but it seems so many had filler or things that would have been b-sides. I am actively looking for early albums from the Sound and Blue Nile, but both are very difficult to find.

    • @gatefold33
      @gatefold33  2 месяца назад

Good luck with the search Brian. I has a copy of The Sound's debut in my hands a couple of years ago. The cover was a bit grubby and it was £50 but looking back I wish I had bought it as not seen a copy since...

Dale, so you’re another spreadsheet person like Steve from All The Worlds a Stage. Some very good picks testing your hypothesis. Not familiar with Blue Nile, but will investigate soon. Cheers.

Hi Dale, yes I certainly buy into Rob’s 5 + 5 and my optimum time is between 35 and 40, but I would also add 33 RPM. PiL seem to be drifting into 2 records at 45 rpm which should be a single album at 33rpm. Several artists also eg I recently picked up a Cramps record an album and it’s 45 rpm. So for me it’s single record 33rpm, 35 to 40 mins but not quite so worried about number of tracks eg 9 or 11 but agree optimum is 5+5. I love The Sound, great band, one of the finest post punk bands for me. I saw them for the first time in 1982 with The Comsat Angels, just brilliant. Adrian Borland went on to do some really interesting projects post Sound. There is a fascinating DVD about him called ‘Walking in Opposite Direction’ that is really worth seeing. Mike

Hi Mike, I'm with you on 33rpm (I am Gatefold33 after all..). Although with 2024 being the year of the 12" single for me I am appreciating the 45rpm fidelity that provides. However I will definitely resist falling down the 45rpm audiophile rabbit hole for albums (I can't afford it!). I will try and find that Adrian Borland film for a watch. Cheers Dale

Hi dale thanks for investigating my concept on this video. We’ve also discussed Paul Weller albums which have been stretched over 2 records before ,but that’s a different conversation . I also missed the sound first time round I’m still not that familiar with them I know Mike pc 31 champions them .. cheers dale 👍

Enjoyed this. Also love Camera Obscura. Current favourite is the new one by Dana Gavanski which is in a similar vein and reminiscent of the more recent stuff by Cate Le Bon. Its near perfect I reckon.

Have to say I don’t like overly long albums, no matter how good the artist / band is.
Not a fan of CD era albums being reissued on vinyl as 3 sided doubles either.
I must give Oh Mercy another listen as people tell me it’s good.
I like your habit of saving related magazine pages in the sleeves...

Hi there Dale, I like longer epic tracks so don't agree with Rob on this (sorry Rob). Close to the Edge is only 3 tracks and it's the greatest album ever made, along with Magma's MDK which is basically just one track - though both are around the 38 minute mark. So your theory wins out over Rob's. However I do have single albums that are 50-60 minutes in length that are excellent.
Does this only apply to studio albums? What about live albums, should they only be around 40 minutes? For me no, the live double album is a staple of rock - always disappointed when they are only singles eg Stones Ya-Yas and Focus's Rainbow albums. Cheers... Pete
