A Duck Decoy Hidden in that Porch Post?
I'm a scrounger of building material. I recently needed a piece of 4 X 4 for a job I was doing and the piece I picked from my pile turned out to be western red cedar. This should work great for duck decoys.

Thank you.
Excited to see the new project.
Thanks, I'll try to keep after it.
I have completed your series. Thanks for your help sir.
Thank you for watching. Happy blind building and happy hunting!
Thanks again. I will probably need to purchase my windows. Little to tricky for me at this point.
If you're going to buy them, I would recommend an awning style window or a sliding window. Width is more important than height.
Thanks again sir.. Very helpful.
You're welcome, I hope it helps.
This is s great video for an amateur like me. Thank you sir for sharing.
You're welcome. I'm also an amateur so if I can do it, you can too.
Do u think 5mm cedar/poplar underlayment would work alright for this?
I do think that would work. The most important thing is to seal the laminated edges well when you're priming and painting and to store them in a dry place.
Looks like a great day!
Thanks, it sure was.
Hey there! This is a beautiful build! Do you happen to have plans I could download and print so I can give it a shot?

Pretty cool. I love watching the old school way decoys were and are made.
Thanks.
How many did that one sheet make
i was able to get 21 silos from one 4' X 8' sheet.
Great video and great work! Can I get the drawings for these? They are awesome
How do you want to make that happen?
do you have any issues with the wood soaking up water and sinking?
Sorry for the delay in my response. Before I replied, I wanted to conduct some "research". You aren't the first to express concern over waterlogged and sinking v-boards. I've never had them in the water for more than hours while using them. For my research, I put two v-board assemblies in a pond on Friday morning with the intent of leaving them there for a couple days and monitoring the result. As it worked out, I wasn't able to get back there until this morning. So this morning, after four days in the water, the assemblies were floating just fine. However, I would not recommend leaving the in the water, especially if the silhouettes are a plywood laminate. I also would not recommend storing v-boards outside, mine are stored in a shed and were very dry. I also have spray painted the arms of the v-boards on three sides to hopefully camouflage and make them blend better with the water, but that wouldn't seal them. I hope that helps answer your question.
@@hookedonquack perfect thank you! I want to run my divebombs out there but was worried about it sinking. Would you say cheap pine would work the best or what kind do you use?
I used pressure treated 2 X 4s and ripped them in half. The pressure treated lumber is rot resistant. Regular SPF 2 X 4s would work.
What I need to know is how you get the base flipped over and put upright working with no help and no lift.
I had plenty of help on the day it was assembled. There were four of us. That would be very difficult to do alone but I guess it's possible with a temporary structure or nearby tree, ropes, pulleys, block and tackle, come-along. I'd recommend you get help.
I made a bunch of these when I was a kid. I still have 2.👍
Nice! I hope you have fond memories of hunting over them.
@@hookedonquackI never killed any geese. We don't get em in my part of Mississippi. They did look cool in my duck decoy spread.
Good job guys!
Thanks, not bad for a couple of rednecks.
Great video, I love the setup. If I can make 1 small suggestion, while it's boiling use a hand held sieve to pull off the "foam" on top. This is the impurities collecting, and if you clear it off it'll help the boil run better and make filtering easier when you're finishing.
Thanks for the feedback. We'll try that.
Really great video!!! I did my very first boil this week. Had a little learning curve but now I'm addicted! Jeremy from MN
It's a fun activity to get us out of the house at a time of year when I have cabin fever. If we were to figure out the cost per gallon of finished syrup, it would be pretty darned expensive. There's definitely a learning curve, we're doing some things right but still need to improve some things. Next big step for us would be reverse osmosis (which I've been watching videos on), not sure we can justify that though. When it got to a point where it was feeling like a job this year, we knew it was time to pull the taps.
Great video, pretty much only one on RUclips. Are you able to send me you’re design drawings so I could build some myself?
Send how?

It would be better to bandsaw the tail then use 5 minute epoxy easy mount and not much wait time
Thanks for the feedback.
Very nice. Did you consider using a sealant when you seated to plexiglass into the sash? Thank you.
No I didn't. In hindsight, I should have and now I'm considering a caulk around the perimeter. For now I'm monitoring the effects of weather on the condition of the sash. Thanks for the feedback.
Is there away to find your plans?
Clamp one end of the wire in your vice and the the other end in your power drill. When you twist the wire it will straighten out as straight as the round bar
Good to know, thanks.
Good to hear from you. I’m working on a group of shorebirds, I was given a block of basswood that wasn’t big enough for a duck so…
Nice! Never turn down a block of wood, even if it's not big enough to make a duck decoy. Share pictures when you're done.
I cut clothes hangars lol
Really curious how many birds you've shot over those decoys? I'm in the process of building some foam and burlap duck decoys, definitely making some of these next. This is my first year hunting waterfowl and I'm hooked!
Honestly, these have seen limited duty. Since I built them two years ago, NY state messed with our daily limits. The regular season and late season daily limit in my area and most of the state is 1 goose/day which makes it hardly worth the effort. Our early September season limit is still good, but we usually hunt ponds in September because few, if any, corn fields are cut by then. I use them to supplement my full body decoys and build numbers. Under the right conditions, the silhouettes alone will get geese to finish.
I'm assuming you went back and painted the opposite side? These look great the only thing I would change is the length of the stakes but otherwise I wouldn't change a thing great job legs go goose hunting lol... 😆
Yes, they're painted on both sides. You're not the first to say the stakes need to be longer. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the feedback.
If you go to a steel supplier you will be able to buy round bar a lot cheaper than Lowes or Home Depot . It will likely come in 10 or 12 ft lengths
A template screwed down to a few roughly trimmed layouts, then throw it on a router table with a flush trim bit. Gets multiples done quickly, precise and if you are smart with your screw holes they should be in the right spot for your ground spikes to go in to.
Good idea. Thanks for the feedback.
Hahaha! Man those look great! Good job
Thanks.
I love this build, but how would you alter this such that the roof was also a preassembled module that could be lifted up and attached from the inside? My land is very remote and far from medical care. I would try and avoid the tall ladder and being on the roof when 20ft of the ground for fear of falling. You show drawn up plans in your video. Can I download those somewhere?
Man, that's a tough one. I guess you could have a frame that the steel roofing is already attached to and that frame could drop inside the wall panels and then screw through that frame into the top of the walls. That would be tough to lift into place, though. Sorry, I don't have the plans posted anywhere.
Very nice what do you use for stakes
I have a video about my stakes. ruclips.net/video/P-WB8mccsXQ/видео.html The material comes from Home Depot and Lowe's. Additionally, I have been doing one of the improvements suggested in the comments of flattening the end into a blade.
Where did you find the plans for your shaving horse?
I was watching another guy's video where he was demonstrating his shave horse and miscellaneous attachments he had for it. I scratched a crude sketch on a piece of paper from what I saw in that video and built from that crude sketch. I haven't documented the design after the fact.
Thanks
You're welcome. I hope it was helpful.
Thanks
You're welcome.
Look good. Do they work on honkers?
I hope. I built the v-boards and silhouettes to use with my floaters and build numbers. Since I built them, NY state messed with our daily limits. The regular season and late season daily limit in my area and most of the state is 1 goose/day which makes it hardly worth the effort. Our early September limit is still good, though. When I built them, I had visions of making a video of them in use but that hasn't happened yet. Hopefully, I can get better documentation this year.

I have a block coming. Can you recommend patterns for Mallard drake?
I don't know what to tell you on that one. I don't know what might be available on-line. The old "kit", Working Plans for Working Decoys by Charles F. Murphy that the plan I used on my reheads came from included a decent mallard plan. Used copies can be found on-line. You'd be paying for other, extra stuff though because it includes 6 plans (Canada Goose, Mallard, Pintail, Wood Duck, Scaup, Canvasback). If you were to go that route, make sure what you're getting includes the box of 6 plans.
Your logo looks like Keuka Lake. My grandparents have a place in Hammondsport. Just found your channel and I'm enjoying.
Yes, Keuka Lake it is. It's a beautiful place.
