Carl has been extremely happy with the wider footprint from what I understand. There are no clearance issues and it's done everything he's asked of it, so seems to be working well.

Birdlings is somewhat a rite of passage. 😅 My advice would be to not try it on your own if it's your first go. Lol.

That's a good tyre option for this bike, you'll have loads of fun! Haha, yeah. That view of stones being thrown is a favorite of mine too!

Found it considerably more vibey than my DR 650 though.

I did notice the stock bars vibrate a bit too, not terrible, but could grow tiresome on long journeys. I imagine a set of aftermarket fat bars with decent bar ends would solve that.

Good point 🤔. The other vibes were through the footpegs which should also be fixable. The bike had only done 330km when I rode it so they may smooth out somewhat after run in?

That was my assumption too, but I actually checked it at a gas station after filming and found it to be within spec. Admittedly on the lower side, but still within the window of what I'd call an acceptable road pressure. It could have honestly been because I've not ridden anything without reasonably aggressive knobbies for ages now and they do behave differently on the road. 🤷‍♂️😅

I would have liked longer with it to really put it through it's paces, but feel like I got a decent grasp of the bike on the short loop I took it on.

We are definitely lucky! NZ has so much amazing riding to offer; we've been at it for quite some time now and are still able to find new spots, tracks and locations. 😁 Thank you for taking the time to comment!

As I mentioned in the episode, I personally felt that the new RE still has some of the feeling of the old model and I'm wondering if it was just me that got that feeling. @TheBadIdeaBros Yet to ride the new Bike, from the beginning I disliked the looks being such a divergence from the 411 which I bought hoping it would be a bit like the Trail Bikes of old. I was underwhelmed by the power output but thought that I could make improvements. On the Dyno I have made 48 percent more power than stock which makes it more fun to ride. As for the 450 which has been sometimes described as lacking in low end power, I have just seen a new Camshaft in development that supposedly rectifies that.

If that camshaft got it producing more low end power it'd really wake the bike up! In it's stock form, the behavior of it's power curve is really forgiving and probably fantastic for a new rider. Impressive results with your old bike though! Did the upping of power generate much more engine temp?

@TheBadIdeaBros not sure about the Engine Temperature, I fitted a larger oil cooler just in case.

Completely valid point that im sure plenty would agree with you on! The location of the air filter definitely could be easier to access, but I guess there's something on every bike that could be done better.. Honestly, for me, taking a few minutes to pull the tank isn't a huge deal, so not a problem in my eyes.

It's all compromise, if they relocated it under the seat you'd complain about the higher seat height.

At the end of the day it all has to go somewhere. 😅 As long as it's in a location that it's sucking cool, clean(ish) air, I feel that's the most important thing.

A high air filter is peace of mind when crossing deep creeks

I had a headwind and I think it had a lot to do with the height of the windshield directing the air right into my face, as I noticed the noise wasn't as evident when I was standing up on the pegs. I'd have to disagree with you in regard to the bike being top heavy. I personally found the 450MT to feel more top heavy than the RE, but that could come down to riding style. That being said, both bikes feel like they're geared more towards touring with the ability to handle off-road.

Everyone can have an opinion! There’s plenty of vids of YTers have taken this bike off road - remember it was launched in the Himalayas - MAD TV love the bike, so I wouldn’t pigeon hole this bike “for the black stuff”

Thank you for taking the time to comment! Your experience is exactly what I was trying to explain in the episode! On paper, the 450MT should be so much more bike than the RE, but it honestly wasn't in my opinion. After riding the RE, I can agree that it would also be my preference. 😁

I do admit that I really like the RE, but even if I pulled the trigger and got one I'd still keep my Rally as they are two different tools for two different jobs. In my opinion I would be using the RE more for touring and up to grade 3 gravel. The Rally for everything above G3. 😁

Also the Rally for my Hard off road and a Suzuki SV 650 ( in my winter home up north near Cairns in Australia) and ab old 1999 Kawasaki Super Shepa 250 - that turned 25 years old last month. I can now put it on Historic registration- which is cheap. So my dilemma is I pay TO much to register and insure 3 bikes . I’m definitely keeping the Guzzi and the Super Shepa- it will be super Cheap rego . so if I sell the SV and Rally - the Rally and Get a Himi it will do the majority of off road riding I do and the on road better . I think 🤔 it’s the way to go in my situation.

Neither of them are super lightweight, but they're both more touring than endure. Different tools for different jobs. That's why I find it so hard to part with my Rally. 😅

@@TheBadIdeaBros Even the crf250/300's seem way too heavy. I remember my previous bike was 101kg dry (about 110kg wet) and made 24HP (1983 XR200RD). Admittedly that was an enduro race bike of the time, factory warranty only covered it for races up to 72 hours duration. I'm probably being over cautious of my partly paralysed left leg and not as young as I once was.

Completely understandable! That's why I always like to say that just because a bike works for one rider, doesn't mean it'll work for every rider! 😊

I was extremely impressed by the RE, and having ridden the 450MT recently, I genuinely feel that they are both a lot of bang for buck.. But I do personally love that single in the RE. 😁

Haha, yeah. He actually comes on rides with us often, so is well versed in running trails! Haha, the dismount was exquisite. 😅 That slick grass absolutely caught me out.

They definitely have one heck of a following! They're a great wee bike and will go practically anywhere.

The factory tyres onestly weren't helping. Massive central blocks and just couldn't hook up on the loose gravel. Birdlings is a very odd surface that's super unforgiving - but a great challenge. 😅

@@TheBadIdeaBros Yeah, it looks like pumice is it? No doubt different to sand, but I'm sure tyre flex would no doubt help. I'm on stock tyres on mine, and knocking the pressure down to 20 is night and day different. Definitely would no go near any mud, but I'm riding rocky Creek beds and gravelly hills that I normally do on my Sherco Enduro bike 🙂

It's actually layers of tiny river stones. Offers next to no traction and gets into chain and sprockets to cause issues. Great stuff. 👌🏻😅 The stock tyres are off the bike now and Carl has gone to Mitas XT+ so should be considerably more capable.

​@@Danger_mouse Tyres were at 22psi. I don't feel any flex on them compared to what I am used to on my other tyres on my other bikes, and that stock tread is so shallow. Fine on normal gravel roads but yeah have now changed them for Mitas xt+ front and Golden Tyre GT823 rear.

True, and too much engine breaking in low gears when you take off the throttle, resulting in digging in the front end

Words got muddled, started in off road mode, after stopping thought I'd try traction control on to see what happens getting going again, it stalled, then went back to off road mode but the words coming out of my mouth were not want I meant. This is the first bike in 20 years I have been unsuccessful on... but it wasn't proper stuck, it was a fairly easy push to get out... until I got the wobble on lol

I'm pretty sure Carl will be going with the Mitas XT+ and there should be a follow-up video. If not on my channel, it'll be on his. (TranzAlperNZ)

Yep, 100% stock tyres. Mostly to see how bad it would be and to give us the "before" footage. New tryes are going on the bike and we will return to film the "after" and see how much of a change there is.

I can confirm this was done on stock tyres. We revisited Birdlings with new, more suitable tyres and you can tlsee that in tomorrow's episode. ✌🏻

The lighter bikes usually get through without a massive battle, but that depends on how turned up it is on the day. 😅 This was mostly an experiment to see how bad it would be for the 450MT on stock tyres.

Absolutely! That'd be fantastic to see. We knew this was going to be bad, but we wanted to know just how bad. 😅 The 450MT is getting new, more suitable rubber as well speak and will be back for another attempt to see if it's any better. 👌🏻

Haha, the deep gravel is always a challenge! 😅 The CB500X in this episode was on cast wheels and managed okay with the normal gravel (he wisely opted out of the Birdlings crossing) so I can't see you having too much of an issue with the lovely gravel around the Banks Peninsula. Honestly, my opinion is that they are two different bikes for two different jobs. The Rally is light, nimble and very forgiving which makes it great on trail, but lackluster on the highway. The 450MT is heavier and a bit more of a handful on trail but great on road. It'd depend on what type of riding you mostly do as to which I'd recommend.

Three people to pick up a CB500 or whatever it was , and that is the reality of the weight of these bikes , that is why the 300 rally is the only realistically weighted bike a solo rider should ride on real off road .

Which is exactly why I wouldn't part with my Rally even if I do buy a new MT or RE. The tougher rides are always more achievable on a lighter bike!

There was a story in The Press about a group of local residents who specialise in rescuing vehicles that get bogged down in Birdlings Flat gravel and they said some vehicles are brand new even Range Rovers.
