ASW28 with INAV - Slope soaring into the clouds
Last week, I had an amazing slope-soaring flight in the Norwegian mountains. I found strong upward air currents that took me to an altitude I had never reached before. Unfortunately, the OSD video link in my goggles did not record. My backup recording on my monitor did not have the same range. So you'll only watch the recording from the HD split camera on the tail.
It's impressive to see how well INAV works on this plane. I had never tried the Loiter-Soaring mode in strong upward air currents before, and reaching such a high altitude was quite a nerve-wracking experience. When the video link to my goggles disappeared, the Return To Home mode safely brought the plane back down from an altit...

    Nice vid. This asw28 canopy is a nightmare. I didn’t find a solution to fix it properly. Your wing extensions are to get more lift due to over weight ?

    • @springpilot
      @springpilot 8 часов назад

      I've reinforced the canopy around the "knobs" holding the canopy to the fuselage with strong transparent packing tape. After a couple of rough landings, some "knobs" have broken, but I've 3D printed new ones. Yes, I've extended the flaps, elevator and ailerons, mostly to improve the loop and roll authority and reduce the wing loads. The model weighs about 2 kg.

      Eventually at home. Yes, INAV has a setting for soaring and gliders. You can look up the GitHub: github.com/iNavFlight/inav/wiki/Navigation-modes#nav-course-hold---fixed-wing-heading-hold "NAV COURSE HOLD - Fixed Wing Heading Hold: When enabled the machine will try to maintain the current heading and compensate for any external disturbances (2D CRUISE). Users can adjust the flight direction directly with the ROLL stick or with the YAW stick (nav_fw_cruise_yaw_rate sets the yawing rate at full stick deflection). The latter will offer a smoother way to adjust the flight direction. If the mode is enabled in conjunction with NAV ALTHOLD the current altitude will be maintained (CRUISE). Altitude can be adjusted, as usual, via the pitch stick. ANGLE mode is forced to be active so the plane will auto level. NAV CRUISE - Fixed Wing Heading + Altitude Hold: Equivalent to the combination of NAV COURSE HOLD and NAV ALTHOLD described above." And: github.com/iNavFlight/inav/wiki/Modes#soaring-fw "SOARING (FW) Fixed wing mode for soaring flight with motor off so intended for sailplanes or motor gliders. Mode becomes active only when Position Hold or Cruise/Course Hold modes are also selected providing semi-autonomous soaring whilst circling or flying straight with heading hold. When the mode is active altitude control is disabled and Angle mode is allowed to free float (disabled) within the pitch range set by nav_fw_soaring_pitch_deadband (float pitch angle on either side of level). The motor can be stopped by setting nav_fw_soaring_motor_stop." In ver. 6.1. All these settings can be done in the Configurator, you don't need to go to cli.

It was a steep and difficult learning curve. It took me 18 months to get the ASW28 up and running. That's the reason for no videos on the ASW28 in a while. Flight time with a 3300 mAh battery, I've managed up till half an hour with a range of up to 1 km in relatively calm conditions. As you can see, I'm flying FPV recreational style, no thermic nor hang flying. When the plane is fully trimmed, I can fly in about 6 - 7 m/sec wind.

    Love, if the plane flight good in Manual mode, then in acro mode, you have the other mode easy to tune, the most important is that you need to have the plane flying good in manual, no other mode, because the others will use the flight controller, then you do you autotune in acro, and finally you do you board pitch level in the mechanics but in this point auto level they said is doing this automictically, I'm talking 3.0.2 . Nice flight I love my Tundra I destroy one but was my fault and not Inav or flight control, the next one will have a H743 board. Hello Jason! Thank you, FPV flying in the great nature of Norway is great fun. I’m into electric gliders, and I’ve fallen in love with the ASW28 from Volantex. I’ve build thee of them and got some expensive experiences from them. The first one I set up only with a simple receiver and a 5 channel radio and I crashed it after a few flights due to a receiver fail and no failsafe. However, I learned that the model had low authorities both on ailerons and elevator. The next model I expanded the ailerons and elevator like Brian Philips has done here on RUclips. I put in a receiver with stabilization and I bought a Spektrum DX8 G2 radio. This model flew very well, I had many nice flights with it until I tried FPV on a screen, without any flight controller. Of course, I lost it. The third one, the one in this video, I fitted out with an Arkbird 2.0 Light OSD and flight controller. I also extended the ailerons and flaps further to get even more authorities and less wing load. I, however, did not move the CG (I don’t know why) so the plane was very nose heavy, but in the stabilized mode it flew well, if you like, check out my other videoes on the channel. However, I experienced that the Arkbird was not very reliable, maybe because of the misplaced CG, or maybe caused by some hard landings. I now build my fourth ASW28, I have abandoned the Arkbird and dived into INAV. I’ve bought a Matek F722 Wing flight controller board. That is a steep learning curve, but when you get into it, it's very powerful. The INAV system requires a lot of channels to get full use out of it. So I've bought a Radiomaster TX16S transmitter with Open TX. That is also a lot to get into. That's the reason why there are no ASW28 videoes on my channel recently. Now it's winter in Norway, that means heavy snow and rain, and gale-force wind most of the time, not good conditions for flying, I'm looking forward to spring and a lot of FPV flying again. Sev

    Hi Alfredo! Welcome to my channel. My original setup you can check out in my video "ASW28 modified for FPV". Later I did some minor adjustments. I struggled with the range and did some changes with the RX, ended up with Spektrum AR8010T 8ch Telemetry Receiver with a Spektrum satellite. But the most significant improvement concerning range was a modification of my Spektrum DX8 G2 with an 8dBi 2.4GHz antenna. Check out my video "ASW28 - Wintry Soaring". After a total loss of that model this summer I have built a new ASW 28 with simular mods as the old one, but now I'm diving into Open TX, Radiomaster TX16S and INAV with a Matek F722 Wing flight controller. It has been a steep learning curve and has taken some time. I've had a few maidens, but I'm working on some final adjustments. I'm hoping to start flying again late this winter when the weather improves here in southern Norway. So stay tuned! Sev

It looks good, is fun to fly and has a great envelope of ways to fly, thermal, sloape soaring, simple aerobatic and FPV. I've chosen the latter, FPV flying I have greate fun of. But I'm in a (not very) steep learning curve. If you check out my other videoes on my channel, I'v had some development, o.e. increasing my range, trimming the plane to a more stable flight and the last development is to include aerspeed. I think that the Lemon RX10 with diversity antennas is just as good as the Spektrum, it's the positioning and directions of the antennas that matters. Hello Alex! In a way it is. If you look at the right hand side of the ODS screen, you'll see in the upper right corner two indicators, banking the upper and tilting the lower. In the middle of the right hand side of the screen, you'll see the barometric hight of the model. All these indicators are highly dynamicly updated so you (at leased I) have a good orientation of the model's vertical movements. Yes there is no sound. But I can very well do without the annoying OOOOUUUYYYIIII-ing and enjoy the sound of air flowing past my plane.
