Modern America Episode 48 |Keith Poore, Seattle Pat Williams Apartments
Keith lives in one of the only clean and sober housing first buildings in Seattle. He had no plan to get clean but accepted entrance into a program that required abstinence. He wasn't ready. He was living on the streets happy with using and drinking. Now, though he was on a different path, he's clean and thriving.
Why aren't we doing more of this? Keith is proof that you don't have to be ready, you have to be introduced to different ideas.
We are proud of you , Keith. Thank you for sharing with us.

As a resident of public housing, next to housing first residents. One thing is becoming clear. A lot of people do not have the motivation to get clean. My neighbor has been through heroin. Meth and now Fentynal. She spends her day bent over infront of our apartments. She has a son whos moved out and left her because of her substance abuse. She has her elderly mother over to.clean up every weekend. This lady is 36 and she has showed no intention of getting clean.

I have a loved one who chose the path to recovery from fetanyl. When he was in the grips of active addiction it was hell on earth. Every day, I prayed that he would live another day.. I was living in fear of the call from the ER notifying his next of kin. But my saddest thought was him dying another unidentified victim of this drug. When he finally made this decision, it was all hands on deck. Our family mobilized to access resources for him. He did a detox and inpatient recovery program. While he was going through that, we were coordinating an oxford house, and assisting him with finding access to intensive outpatient care including both pharmaceutical and behavioral therapies. He had untreated ADHD and bipolar disorder, so we supported him in navigating Healthcare coverage. When he got out of the inpatient program he had a new home, new people (NA, Oxford house roommates, and family that had gone through Nar-Annon, and new things: clothes, furnishings/ bedding etc. He practiced mindfulness, prayer, meditation, yoga, exercise, clean eating, and learned to accept his traumatic past and build resilience. He needed a BIG safety net of family and friends who refuse to give up. Still to this day, I live with joy and hope as he has graduated drug court, joined a union, reunited with his children, and living independently. I still call at least weekly. He's so busy living a life of responsibility, he can't always answer, but he always calls back. We still share tears of gratitude for the journey we've made it through. There is so much I cannot share in this brief comment. Yes, the answer has been so complex. He needed top down therapy and bottom up care, he worked through things from the inside-out, we worked on the outsie-in. 100% worth the fight.

This. Right here. On the tails of the insanity of "safe supply" and "housing first", Ginny brings us a sane outlook. For many years I worked with abstinence-based CD clinicians in Oregon. Lots of clients in the criminal justice system, etc. This is empathetic, this is compassionate, this is no-BS and no excuses - this brings the potential for recovery.

My ex gf now dead, intentionally got herself addicted to pain pills because her nurse friends in Kentucky said it was fun. What bs. She turned into a junkie. Back in 2006 she was bringing home these patches from the hospital that apparently were fentanyl. And then she put them in their mouth and suck on them. I couldn’t believe it. This is like the kind of crap that they give to end of life cancer patients and she’s taking this stuff.

Best counsellor I ever had wasnt an ex self medicator drug and alcohol worker. I had complete trust in this gay nurse for over 10 years intermmitently, but not much trust in the drs or staff holding the sole underlying religious goal they have in their individual stories of proudly being clean and sober. Its as though theres a right to critisize clients in vulnerable positions as a right of being a clean and sober person. Fuck that shit (personally i add). I am healthy and record free with no money owed or stolen in my life so I guess I did OK in 45 years of IV opiates (8 clean stretch in there so yeah I know NA and all that) I get that if you have the goal of cessation that they share as the only option. being off your meds by wise choice due to it costing more than money and affecting others . Ive had far more trauma inflicted on my life by peoplpe who thought they knew me based on the way they think, and no clue who i am.

What he’s saying is true for 80-90% of the staff….They are squares and unable to look at the world thru the eyes of a homeless drug addict… In my experience a lot of the people I worked with tried to understand, but were unable to do more than repeat verbatim housing first, harm reduction “best practice” propaganda!!

Why do this? Who does this help & how? Theres NOTHING ethically wrong with using drugs. The War on Drugs & the Drugs being illegal is the problem. Why shouldn’t people go to a Heroin clinic? Or a Meth Clinic? Or make & use the drugs they want at home? Why shouldn’t that be the goal? Not everyone has a chronic relationship with the drugs they prefer. The US drug laws (illegal) are what drives drug addiction & disease. If people could get drugs without fear of arrest, getting cut drugs, using dirty needles or getting robbed wouldn’t that be better? Humans are not designed to be sober all their lives. Its fun getting high, otherwise people wouldn’t do it.

Let us know how that works out for you. You must be better at using drugs than me. I used drugs daily for over 20 years. Ruined my life. When I got clean in 2018, my life got drastically better. Imagine that. Good luck to you bro!

@ what ruined your life is what you were born into..a fucking drug empire run by criminals! Im not supporting that as any literate human knows. Your addiction was driven by the current drug regime…the War on Drugs is largely why you had addiction issues.

Pussy galore...... Brain scrambled beyond galore........ Of these we heart Seattle interviews I'm constantly hearing hurtful things said about the homeless as well as trafficked individuals. It's enough to say a person was housed in alot of places and REST to them directly refer to galore as the skit, omg. The shelters are full of exploitation, and society will not let people stabilize, gain employment, education, and there's too many issues that are unable to be resolved. Including how people are treated by SUD providers and detox by staff as well as other patients.
