Cleaning Graves Mountain Georgia Irridescent Hematite or Turgite
Long after my trip to Graves Mountain Georgia to collect irridescent hematite, I discovered there was more treasure found than previously thought. Using an "aluminum brightener" solution, there was a positive improvement in appearance in some specimens. However, see what you think for yourself in this video.

Disclaimer: I came to have that rare experience of pulling amethyst crystals straight from the pocket, but I had to settle for a tailings dig because of recent heavy rains. See the end of the video for what several people found in a single day a week later. The Purple Knight Amethyst Mine is a new mine near Lexington Georgia in Oglethorpe County that has been exclusively available to the NC/SC ...

Crowleys Ridge Agates Near Forrest City, Arkansas
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.Год назад
Some of these that look like agates might be petrified wood, banded jasper/chert, or maybe just a reddish jasper. I really liked the red moss agate appearance of the rock used in the main photo. It is not the agate formation typically sought for at Crowley's ridge which are tan and have fortification lines, however some of those were found as well. The spot I searched is at 35°03'15.0"N 90°45'1...
Geology Field Trip in Iva, South Carolina - Quartz Crystals & Citrine

All this trip is missing is a real geologist familiar with the rocks in the area, which is a big deal I know. Private farms in the area are reported to have a range of minerals including quartz crystals, amethyst, corundum, garnet, beryl, and zircon (Source: rockhoundresource.com/south-carolina-rockhounding-location-guide-map/). Diamond Hill Mine Quartz Crystals in South Carolina
Просмотров 3,6 тыс.Год назад
I spent a day here digging though through tailing piles at the Diamond Hill Mine in South Carolina. To be clear the mine is the dirt piles. If I were to clean the crystals I would first remove all the dirt and then soak in a solution of Super Iron Out and water. Google the method or search for other methods using Oxalic Acid or others (careful when handling acids). Many iron-stained specimens f...

Eagle Bluff Marcasite and Fossils Near Tahlequah Oklahoma

I did not have much luck, but I spent less than 2 hours there and covered hardly any of the hillside. The marcasite crystals are really special, and there is potential for really nice fossils. Located just south of Eagle Bluff resort on Highway 10, north of Tahlequah Oklahoma.

Thanks for this video, Scott! I am wondering if that works on other iridescent material? I have some from various locations, but none from Graves Mountain...I'm half tempted to try it.
I don't know enough about the cleaning reaction, but I think the reason why it works on Graves Mountain material is because some is coated in a thin layer of aluminum. I am guessing it won't work on what you have.
Found some of this material after road construction on seven north of Hot Springs. Village. Good to know where it came from. Cool video. Thanks for sharing.
Very cool!!
Fun bunch of awesome roocks❤.
Nice gemmy garnets, definitely mixed reactions from the local rockhounding community about the vip club… changing times , I guess the old books are becoming obsolete, great finds though
Thanks! Yes it is great to have a place that shares up to date collecting info on many old sites and also finding new sites. I've had a really good time in the VIP club. There is some occasional friction, but it's usually out in the open and transparent for people to judge for themselves.
Yeah, I’ve been tossing around the idea of joining…. I guess a lot of people are just concerned about what used to be semi secret locations getting overrun, but from what I’ve seen any place they’ve put up so far seem okay & it is especially hard to find new locations in the upstate of sc, the national forest service has stopped even letting people pan for gold, the permit was free until recently. Great garnets though & it does seem worth it for the price, we pay to be in local rock clubs so I don’t see the difference, take care & good luck digging 👍✌️
Those pieces turned out very nice!! Great finds, Scott!!
I found a mollusk shell about 11 inches across in fort smith Arkansas in a big creek bed looking for arrowheads years ago.
That's huge. I know some places near me with some large fossils, but I feel like it's for the fossil collectors to enjoy since I don't treasure them as much although they are intriguing.
@@findingrocksdotcom6475 what county are y’all in?
We go to that same spot very often. Beautiful rocks.
It's a great spot, but I assume anywhere on Crowley's Ridge with a river and gravel is a goldmine.
The workers usually tell you where and what to look for, enjoy the hunt, finds are icing on the cake, lol! Garnets in host rock, nice!
Great info thanks!
Boring
Right?
Have you ever hunted for emeralds at crabtree?
Not yet, it's on the list.
I’ve gone twice now, and I always go in the creek. Wonderful on a hot summer day. Only need a bit of bug spray, trees provide pretty good shade. Would recommend some water shoes/boots because the water is very cold. I’ve had very good luck in the creek. The longer you work, the more you find.
What do you find in the creek?
There are lots of gems you can find. They have a display board for you to look at so you have an idea of what you’re looking for. Emeralds, sapphires, hiddenite, and a lot more
Very cool! Thanks for bringing folks along with you!
The surrounding tobacco fields have more emeralds than that place nowadays...there are emerald pockets but you need big equipment and deep pockets.
Is there anywhere in Arkansas where you can dig for turquoise and with any luck?
I haven't heard of a good place that's available to the public. I've seen some people share photos on Facebook of finds that were not from this location, of course they wouldn't share that info.
But the public can’t dig there. What a shame.
I love crystal Vista. Just dint like the hike. As a smoker it takes me longer to get u p
It's a hike that keeps people from going back. Next time I just want to bring backpack with tools/water/food and empty bucket and only collect crystal points.
Can you tumble those ,,,what is the hardness?
I wouldn't think so, I'm not into polishing or tumbling (currently) but just assume you need a certain thickness of specimen to tumble.
This place is a tourist trap
Where is it at in Georgia bro I subscribed to you. Thanks.
Did you read the description? The location is given out to those who are approved to dig.
@@findingrocksdotcom6475 I joined do I wait until they except me To be able to dig ?
What is the location for this mine?
In Georgia
Did you read the description? It's a private mine you have to be approved to dig there and get its location.
Arkansas here 🙋🏻♀️ I live close to the beautiful White River.
Sifting is not a good way to find crystals. It’s best to just dig out the pile and hand sift through the loose dirt. The bigger ones will pop out. The tiny ones are a waste of time unless you are making jewelry. Never give up. A treasure is hiding in wait for you if you have patience to keep looking 👍
Great advice, Shawn! It's amazing I hadn't really figured that out yet.
Nothing wrong with sifting the soil, there's always someone that has to boss everyone around and tell them they are doing it wrong lmfao 😆. You find great stuff sifting, so sift away and ignore the so called know it all's... You do you, f the hater ...
That was a nice pocket and some awesome finds!
Wynne here!!
$50 to find a handful of pale amethyst fragments? 😮 You got ripped off _hard_ bro.
It's a new mine and the first rain happened the day before. You are right it wasn't $50 of amethyst that I found. I aim to find 3-4 times what I pay always. Every mine trip I've been on has been a gamble, most of them would count as an economic loss but a great adventure.
Wow, those are amazing
Was it worth the money ?
Always a good question. What are your thoughts after watching the video? I'm not an expert on value. The experience was worth it for me. I got to dig out of a nice little pocket for $100, and I don't know if there are any mines that have pocket digs for less than $300.
awesome finds
Great finds, Scott! Glad to see Chris on there, too! Bryan really does a great job in getting us all good deals to mine in areas we normally would not be allowed to. It's really great that he does that!
I'm happy every time. He admits sometimes 10% don't have good luck but most people do during the events he organizes. I really wanted to go yesterday, but I can wait until next time (hopefully there is a next event).
Thanks for the video! I’ll be coming down to Arkansas for the holidays and have some neat places of where to look around for stuff. The possible shark tooth… looks to be correct? I think if this was in North Central Arkansas, a species of shark that’s quite famous there. I hear the teeth are on the rarer side to find in the area though. As for my favorites of the video. I love those brachiopods. They looked huge compared to what I find locally
I rarely look for fossils, this area is a hotbed for those kind of marine fossils. Good luck on your trip!
@@findingrocksdotcom6475 thank you!
And will I no what it is? Uh No I Won't! 😂🤩🙃
Congratulations on your door prize
It's really an awesome Amethyst cluster, worth the trip by itself!
Love it! Gotta get you back down when the pockets are available!
Absolutely! I have been hoping on a trip around there in March. We'll see if I can wait that long.
Amazing!! What a blessing! The owner's are willing to share pockets with respectful Rock Hounds. God Bless them and you. Thank you for sharing this awesome video and place.
The tailings are absolutely beautiful. I would be thankful and appreciate digging in them tailings.
We’ve been in this general area for a couple of years now & unfortunately there is a lack of public space to dig
There needs to be more public mines around there.
No doubt about that. I wish that Johnson creek farm would do a few more digs, our rock club is trying to talk them into it
Great video. When I was a younger, older man, I visited this place often. My entire backyard was landscaped with football sized specimens you showed. Not rutile , however. Fist sized, yes.
Sounds like you took part of the mountain with you over time. Sounds amazing!
That is crazy, that is the same spot I dig in oconee
I didn’t realize many other people knew about that place
@@diggingappalachia954 Dang I was hoping the place you visited was different (more places to go). I am surprised it hasn't been more exploited but hopefully it won't.
I’ve been there twice & there usually isn’t a whole lot of evidence of other people, you can tell people go there, I haven’t told anyone where it is though, I always worry if too many people go then it could end up posted, pretty neat that you ended up there
@@diggingappalachia954go ask the guy across the street to pay him to dig in his yard. He has big clusters
@@findingrocksdotcom6475How are you hoping it wont be exploited when youre telling people how to access it? No logic
thanks for the video im going in a week first time. Your video helps
That place is a big rip. There is nothing there. If you want to find good crystals go to Diamand Hill mine in SC .Also Ray mine in Burnsville is public.Aquamarine and tourmaline. If you want garnets go to Little Pine garnet mine.Crabtree mine emerald smokey quartz tourmaline, yellow beryl.Ray mine is free very steep mountainous tailings piles from the actual mine.
You got a lot of great pieces!! It's a really beautiful location, too. My kids and I had a BLAST out there digging as well. So glad you were able to go.
Yes I forgot we were the day after you were there. You all did so great, so many big points and clusters!
Good stuff...keep digging and each time you will read the terrain better...like a nice gem, it takes time
I have never really seen anything coming out of there, my next trip should be to Crabtree emerald mine, I just missed a field trip there but the heliodor & black tourmaline stuff is everywhere & there’s a better chance of finding emerald
I will have to give Crabtree a try next time.
Holy shit this is crazy that this is being recommended to me. A couple years back my rockhounding buddy was super hyped about going here, when he went he got crushed in cave-in while digging in one of those small veins people dug out. HIS BODY WAS NEVER RECOVERED R.I.P Timothy Yankovsky 1999-2019
Nice. Love this place. Never know what's gonna come out of the ground. I've found some of my BEST crystals here. Way better than ANY pay to dig mines.
I love the chances at finding blue phantoms. It's great that there is a free place. I need some more experience there though.
We're considering going next month. But this place is 6 acres. How do you know where's a good place to dig?
They are all tailing piles from what I understand, so the best people to know what hasn't been over-searched are the mine operators. Be sure to ask them when you pay about if there are fresh tailings to go through or if there is a better location. They had told me to dig 8 feet down. If you go there a few days in a row maybe you can ask if they can strip off some of the layers above.
I suspect most of these traveled from further north. You need to check out some creeks in Washington county Missouri!
Are they like the lace agates near Potosi?
Nice pieces!! I've never searched in the Crowley's Ridge area before...looks like it might be a fun trip!
If I can find 4 genuine fortified agates in an hour like in this video, then I am confident you would have a bucket full of them. lol It was my second time doing a quick stop there and although I don't tumble or polish rocks I am hooked on those agates!
There was a piece that looked like it had some slight purple in it. You had it touch the tip of your finger at 11:58, but you can see it a little more clearly when you are showing the pan (going back and forth a little) at 11:34-11:48. Looks like a fun, exploratory trip! With all of that quartz and mica laying around, I bet there is quite a bit of material not too far under those surfaces...they had to break off and come from somewhere.
I see the one you are talking about, it does have a faint purple color at least in the video. I'm not surprised if I missed something in the screen. I dug about a foot deep just a little away from the bridge. I don't feel comfortable digging too close to the bridge foundation or directly under the bridge. All those quartz rocks and mica around there is like a shiny treasure compared to the sandstone around home.
Sweet specimens
