GD Ship Lashing
Добавлен 26 авг 2021
In 2005 we got "B" registered membership to ILWU, in 2010 becoming "A" registered members. We have been currently Lashing for a little over 13 years together. This channel is to try to help new people to the industry see examples of lashing on a ship. These videos are also video references for me on each ship.

I did not know it was your wife . That’s cool . Great videos
Stay safe out there Bro.
Thank you, I always try to be. You be safe as well.
Im from LA/LB we never drop or lash next to out partners. Safer to keep as far away from each other as posible . Just Incase a bar falls . I like the videos .
Right on, we are A-registered in Seattle. Yes, you are correct general s[ealing I like to keep my distance from other as well. That said my wife and I have been lashing together for 14 years now and we are a little jaded. If you ever travel to Seattle to work hit me up.
Why are you dropping so close to each other ? That’s how accidents happen .
We have lashed together for 14 years. I only drop close to people I trust.
Super new!!
How do you get the tippy tippy top containers?
Tip can are just secured by cones.
How to get this job. I have a experience
Each area can be different on how they hire. On the West coast USA locals have a lottery style drawing for new people. These lotteries vary on when they are held.
Wow, how many people does it take to lash and unlash a whole load?
It can vary. We have had as few as 2 and as many as 32 in our port.
@gdshiplashing8239 Wow, thank you for answering my question
All the hmm’s have them nuts. In England we call them d rings
All the hmm’s have them nuts. In England we call them d rings
Right on. Yea I haven't been on an HMM in a while now. Be safe.
Hey I know those 2! That’s the lashing power couple right there!
lol who is this? 😀 You must be in Seattle.
@@GamersGamut Right on brother. We'll see you in the hall.
Thank you for your videos
You're welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting.
What local ?
Teamwork, love to see it 👏🏾👍🏾
I'm enjoying the video Can you tell me what kind of gloves you are wearing?
I like to wear Cestus rigger gloves. The brand I’m wear is now provided my the employer. Before they provided us gloves I was buying my own rigging gloves which were made by Hexarmor. a.co/d/g8RnHLe
Those are brutal stackers for on the ship
That ship is very brutal.
Im lashing man in casablanca port
On a ship like that always hanging your 3 highs behind you ! Makes life hell of a lot easier!
I’m not sure what you mean by behind you. Generally speaking 3 high bars are not to difficult for me. Are you referring to people who are shorter and being able to reach? I can see how the would be much easier to do as you are saying then. Thanks for your feedback.
Which country
USA
Now Singapore working lashing man can working lashing men USA give me your contact number
I am 12 yes Expedia I want to work in USA
Now I work in Singapore port
@@karthikaru5949 well I’m not really sure the whole process of working in the US is. But as far as Longshore work on the west coast there is a lottery drawing ever once in a while, then a casual process.
I am new worker
right on
@@gdshiplashing8239 lashing work is very hard
At first, it gets easier with experience.
That's a horrible demonstration. The test is 13 minutes for 3 cycles. That was WAY too slow. At that pace, it would take 15+ minutes, and you would fail. And you were dropping the bars....
@@jam82599 I did it in under 13 min in 3 cycles the video is only 8min and 19 sec long. I also performed it at a moderate pace to show there is no need to run. But thanks for your input. This is just to allow people to have an understanding of what the test is about and not for me to show off. Yes it is a slower pace I personally didn’t break a sweat. What port are you from?
Send me your wtsup numbr plz
I'm not sure what you are asking for.
@@gdshiplashing8239 brother in which country do you working currently ?
Nice man. Looks like graft im right on the docks myself always wondered about lashing.
Thanks. I've been trying to put out videos to help new people in the industry, have some sort of an idea on how to lash.
💪
Thank you
use a fat rebar for breaking
The employer supplies the rebar we use. On drops that I know are harder breaks I break a crowbar which does the trick.
Am intrest of this job
Well it all depends on where you live on how they hire for this job.
Not really the best job in the world.
@@JoseGomez-lp2fi it’s a great job for me
@gdshiplashing8239 I thought so to in the beginning when I started but doing this for 27 years 17 of these years lashing until I became a foreman, it took a toll out of my body mostly my arms from lifting up the bars and my legs from climbing up all those catwalks.
@@JoseGomez-lp2fi Yea I get that. I started back 28 year ago. I've been lashing 14 years straight now. But for me I still like the job. I'm love the workout. I find it helpful to keep my weigh down and doing push ups and pull ups to help keep my shoulders strong. But yes it can be hard on the body. I
It helps to be tall with long arms! Us short guys are on our tippy toes and pushing up C bars with our finger tips lol! Good job on the videos G and D!
Yes it does help. I would like to see more videos being made by others in our industry. Variety would really help new people to the industry. Hit me up at the hall again if you want to start making your own videos. I can give you some tips on how I film.
I Think it's Kota Ship Because Always Kota Ship Have 3 High Lashing 😊
No it was not a Kota, it was a CMA
Are u lashing man or ship crew? I have one doubt, container ships, lashing and unlashing doing by the ship crew or shore crews?
We are ILWU union members, we are not crew. We get our jobs at our hall, and then work on whichever ship we are dispatched to.
For a 5'4 footer like me this is kinda hard. You need extra effort.
Buckles too?😆
Just leaving my two cents here, get a tennis ball for these turn buckles, lodge it inbetween the oval lock and the threaded pin, then you can spin it like a normal turnbuckle without holding the lockring.
right on that is a good idea. We also carry large paper clips to hold up the oval slider.
@@gdshiplashing8239 That's a nice one aswell, works on the other type of self locking turnbuckles, but in a quick situation you could always use a water bottle or something similar.
Nice! Have been considering checking back in on nights. I have been days for about 7 years but did 11 on nights before that.
Right on. We mostly work nights, it just harder video in the dark and show things. But generally speaking I prefer working at night.
High noise is there? Can we use ear muff? when duty time. I'm gp student, That's y I'm asking 😅
Yes, I've used ear muff style hearing protection before. I've used the kind which would attach to my hard hat. They do work good, but in warmer weather I get too hot. Generally speaking I prefer eye plugs.
What is a gp student?

Where are you from...
I work in the Port of Seattle in the United States.
Good job brother
Thanks you
I have been observing your craft for a long time and admire your strength
Hello colleagues from Seattle. I would be so happy if you would make more videos with the 4-5 high unlocking bars💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
I will try to work on that. It's going in to winter so recording in the dark is harder.
@@gdshiplashing8239 Have you ever used telescopic poles? And do you always work with the rods during the day or at night?
No we do not use telescopic poles. Yes we day and night using the same gear, we just wear headlamps at night.
finally got my first lash on Sunday. Work smarter not harder kept ringing in my head. 👍
Right on. Stay safe.
nice teamwork, do you always get the same partner.
Yes I am fortunate enough to work with my wife. We have been lashing together sense 2010.
@@gdshiplashing8239. Thats cool, UNID in Tacoma my crew is different every shift I get.
Right on. We are Seattle "A" Registered. We use to travel to Tacoma. @@jrreed6992
If it’s really bad, the next thing to do is use a one high lashing bar, the extra length and weight, use the leverage. Something else about the method you are using of striking the turn buckle, it works and it’s safer than cranking on it extra hard
Yep if I hard a recording of that I would have used that too. If it is too difficult most the time we can get it with one person striking it with a breaking bar while the other person using either a braking or lashing rod
Safety first
very true
Really ! He have a sweater around his neck? Hahaha!
She has another shirt she is carrying around her neck. We work where is gets cold in the winter. She is carrying it for when we stop working later.
What port are you from?
Is a lot of bending just to take out the pins each one of them. I rather just unlash them not tiring but each it’s own method how to unlash
I completely agree we each have our on methods. I started this channel just to show new people how to lash. My way isn't right for everyone but works for me. On this lash the buckles were binding and stiff so for time and ease on my arms and hands I was pulling the pins. I would really like to see more people making videos of how they unlash and lash ships, so newer people can see more methods. Thanks for your comments.
Useful video. Thks😃
I'm happy it helps.
What happens to the containers on top? Call insurance company , file an insurance claim for extensive water damage
If the containers are too high for us to unlock, then people unlock from aloft.
@@gdshiplashing8239 ok understood, but the lashing does not reach the top containers , is it not required ?
Not lashing is not required on the upper containers. The container are secured to one another using locking cones.
How are they going to reach the top containers ?
The crane will bring the stevedore on top of the container. Are you new to the industry or just curios about how it all works?
Really like the videos bro. Plan to start posting some lashing videos of my own. Love it!
Great video, been in my lashing gang for about 4 years now. Port of Virginia.
Right on. I look forward to seeing your videos
I’ve been lashing and unlashing ships like this for 10 years. Now, I’m terminal TRACTOR driver. Take care😂😂😂
I’ve been in the industry for 26+ years now. I’ve done equipment, but I love the physical aspect of lashing. 😂😂😂
@@gdshiplashing8239 …it’s hard work…for many times is necessary fighting : cold days, rainy days,
You don’t need a clip, just be the clip
Most the time I do just try to manage the turnbuckles with my hand. It seems like I use clips more on the lash backs.
Muy suave esa trinca acá en ecuador trincamos con cadenas y cablee
That is the real lashing. We lash break bulk that way. Luckly our containers are lashed with bars and buckles.
I had the drop on that ship last week of March here in port of Los Angeles
Right on. Yea that was a nice ship. Looks like it hit LA then come up to Seattle. We are from Local 19 Seattle.
@@gdshiplashing8239 had the drop on Cma Cgm Hermes today. Auto cones. Two tier knuckle lashing with over engineered pedestals
