We're Back!! Welcome to Season 2 of The Collective Podcast
Really difficult to listen to this Episode with Casey being so much louder than Ash, are you recording separate audio channels by any chance to avoid this in the future? Anyways, still great to see him on the show. Thanks
Can't believe a convo between these greats has 2k views for more than a year now. It ll stay in history
so this is the guy who made scavengers reign and also the same guy making common side effects 🤯🥶
I was a HUGE Hungry Beast fan, yeah it was patchy, but you could feel the passion.
Sopranos and Six Feet Under were on free to air TV back in the day, swearing and all. I remember Peter Krause saying F_cking C_unt on broadcast TV and thinking, yes, we've made it!
Brisbane had a pretty amazing music scene in the 90s, some of the biggest Aussie bands at the time were coming out of there.
Legend. Aussie farkin LEGEND mate!
nothing like Ash casually dropping a conversaion with Patrick Clair then driving into the sunset, kinda badass.
I met Patrick at his place of work in 2013 as an aspiring Motion graphics Artist. He was the bee's knees to me at that time. His feedback and advice to my work lit a fire in me to keep digging. Have so much respect for him. It has been a pleasure to watch his trajectory since then - a master at play. The next year I accidentally bumped into Ash's FITC Tokyo Bumper which made me emotional. IT was THAT good. Still is incredible to watch fullscreen. Ash was the biggest inspirations for years to come after that. It's a gift to watch 2 industry pillars who shaped my animation journey have a conversation after a decade of learning. Thank you and respect.
I'm glad Patrick brought up Duncan Elms here. It'd be awesome to get an episode with him on
100%!!
Keep em' coming
Looking forward to Part 2 plss...
Great conversation. Inspiring!
I love the section on expectation. I saw an interview with Alexandre D'Astier a little while back and when asked how having successful project and he replies 'Success has nothing to do with it, I am a maker, I make things. If people like it or not, it's up to them, I'll never stop making things'. And it changed my life and general view on art and creation and exploration. Excellent point of view.
A true treasure! Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into this. It’s inspiring to see such dedication. Patrick Clair’s work has always amazed me - it’s fantastic to hear him here, being so open about his journey
oh boyy
What a great conversation! Big fan of both!
This is gold!
Christmas came early this year! Thank you so much for doing these Ash!
Damn! MHC and more collective, we eating good! Thanks Ash
One of the best shows I've ever seen, live action or otherwise that's a given but this show is SPECIAL 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🤯🤯🤯🤯❤
Ash, for a guest recommendation, you should really interview Simon Holmedal!
Thank you for this
Why does the host never let the guest finish a sentence or even a thought...
49:00 I wasn't privileged to grow in a very loving family but I chose digital art as a career option which made me feel like it loves me so I did fine later in life
My friend is an artist, I put him on Reign, he told me, "Won't let me screenshot, but I don't think I can do this show. The animation is beyond lazy and low budget." ...I was taken aback. The Animation is breathtaking to me, (Looks like Miyazaki & Heavy Metal if you ask me, superb futuristic throwback.) But Different (brush) Strokes.
The Batman is literally my favorite film at the moment. For multiple reasons, and one of those reasons is the absolute beauty of the film. The use of all kinds of different colors and the way he would shoot in darkness, etc. I pray to any of the thousands of gods out there that Greig will shoot The Batman 2 which the script is finally finished and turned in now. But I know Dune 3 is shooting probably around the same time, so I REALLY hope that the timing is right that he's able to shoot it. The only other cinematographer that I would even be remotely on the level on Greig and would understand exactly what Matt is trying to accomplish is Lawrence Sher. He's also one of my favorite DP's in the business. His work on Joker and the upcoming sequel seems to be out of this world. I've seen Joker about 30 times, and the way he shot that film and his use of lighting is just incredible. But I would rather have Greig shoot the entire The Batman trilogy.
Then theres no need for masses. Why would they need workers then. Decrease population?
Artists rooting for corporations because they don't have the power to protect themselves against AI companies. Also, AI devalues art, and having more and cheaper art won't benefit the artists.
This podcast is so inspiring. Beeple is so authentic and makes a dude want to go make some art!😁
Healthy self doubt, shows he's not a psychopath. Checked out Nick's work. Gorgeous stuff. I honestly don't care about the process, the end results speak for themselves. I know there's a lot of talk these days, with AI etc, on sharing the BTS to validate the art. I don't subscribe to that. The art is the art. If it needs to be justified or validated by extra media, or an verbose explanation of some esoteric technique or craft talk then it's not powerful enough. Nick's work is powerful enough in it's own right in my book. Great that he's sharing his process for those who are interested, but it's not necessary to validate the art. IMHO.
The more I hear, the more it sounds like the RUclips may be the legacy over the art. I'll check out the RUclips channel for sure.
Great interview gents. Re films vs Digital. A shit photographer with a film camera is always gonna suck next to a great photographer with a digital camera every time. And I see a LOT of shit, try hard, wannabee film photographers these days. A lot lot. Subjective I know, but also pretty dang true. So many try hard influencers who can't even frame decent shot, burning through film stock with reckless abandon. Practice your craft on a digital camera, even a phone before wasting money on film. Film won't make your art better, if you're shit, practice and get better on digital before you waste the film. Ash probably knows all this. I'm talking to the kids and try-hards chasing the dragon here. I'm lucky I was around at a time where we had full photography darkrooms in high-school. It's a lot of fun for sure, especially when you develop your own rolls and make your own prints with an enlarger, the chemical baths etc. Those chemicals smell so good! At least back then it was cheap. Now it's a bit of a luxury.
Wow ash aged quite a bit…. So sad to see everyone getting old
22:47 on that empathy filter you theorize, I think you hit it pretty well. Check out Nonviolent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg, he was a great teacher.
So funny that Ash’s French got so much better when taking to beeple hhhh😂 Great episode once again Ash! Two of my hero in Art and design!
Respectfully, the idea that a technology that can exclusively create the most derivative and impersonal content you can imagine has any chance of ending our era of derivative and impersonal slop because it allows the little guy to do it too instead of exclusively the big studios, is very naive. If anything, it is the culmination of everything you denounced about current day media, not any sort of answer to any of it.
54:38
01:14:00 Yep. Why the F do people feel they need to be the copyright police for big corporations? F the big companies. Steal steal steal.
The custom commercial thing Mike discusses around 45 mins is spot on. this is where entertainment in general is going to go. The AI will know us all down to the nth degree from our browsing history, purchase history and basically watching and listening to everything we've done us for 15+ years. It will generate media to keep us engaged, integrate brand advertising seamlessly into it to keep us buying buying buying. By that stage it'll be Universal Basic Income, or pits full of dead bodies for 75% of us. Sorry google, I know you're listening, it ain't gonna be you. You're way too far behind the leaders. It'll be whatever conglomerate ends up owning Netflix and Open AI. My money is on Mircrosoft and/or Nvidia. Maybe if Amazon and Google merge they could be in with a shot.
Great episode ! I recently watched a comedy show created using AI. It's a compelling creative use of it. They embrace the weirdness, all of it !!! AI or DIE : ruclips.net/video/_xb55MCiS1U/видео.html
1:17:05 Beeple explained it really well
1:33:16 100% happened to me too. 20+ years of none stop work, then f*cking tumble weeds blowing in the wind. Though i but that down more to an over inflated industry. I'm of the mind; adapt, go all in with AI. It's time to be excited, a few years ago we were thinking; what can we do for others (clients), now we should be thinking what can we do for ourselves given we now have the power of a production team at our fingertips. While my work has gone up in smoke, im now doing things with GPT that i could never imagine.
nice video.
Cannot think of anything more frightening than an AI lie detector haha. Have you seen the shit it makes up? And the confidence those MFs would have, "Ach-tctually my ear piece says you're wrong". Gosh they'd be insufferable.
