What's at the Bottom of Darrington?
www.patreon.com/voiceovertrails
Crosscut and hooktender are two of the short little trails at the bottom of North Mountain that everyone ignores because they're too busy riding the bigger, longer trails higher up.
Here's what they're missing.

Welcome back! So how would you compare this to, ya know, those certain unmentionable double black trails which we definitely wouldn't have the bad taste to name? Barring that, how about say, Predator or Double Black Double Down? Or an actual sanctioned trail expert trail in BC? Too bad to hear Skyline is so beatup.

    • @VoiceOverTrailReviews

I would say that it compares rather favorably to all of those other trails. It definitely didn't feel like it had as many mandatory features DBDD.

It was the orthopedist who called me 4 hours after the X-Ray (during band rehearsal) to tell me I had an aligned distal break on my collar bone to which I asked “Does that mean I shouldn’t be playing drums right now?”

I have bad memories of hiking that trail out of Cultus Creek campground up that hill. Sometime between the mid-80's and the late 90's, the trail that exists now was rerouted from the original path which-- I know this is hard to believe-- was even steeper.

Rode my Beta Evo300 trials motorcycle on this trail yesterday but went backwards from the OP's original route (up from the campground) and I can assure you the trail had gotten much worse in the last 3 years from the original video. It was not for the faint of heart when I rode up and across that large rock face the the OP had to portage his bike around. The root sections on this trail are the worse I have every encountered on a PNW trail and I don't believe I could have done it on one of my enduro motorcycles. I rode the same route 17 years ago and survived a brain tumor that I discovered later that same day so yesterday was my homecoming ride. If you are riding this loop on a bike my hat is off to you as there are much better places to beat the crap out of yourselves and your equipment here in the PNW.

Wenatchee has pretty nice (albeit not free) camping at Confluence State Park. Also at Squilchuck state park; up near Mission Ridge, mostly lame xc riding. One could boondock camp up variously classic hillbilly spots up around the saddle above #2 canyon riding area. Lots of other dirtbag camping and " off the grid" rides in the valley as well. Also, FWIW you could ride whatever around Wenatchee, go park your rig at your Confluence campsite and pedal maybe 1.5 miles into town on a flat bike path, get schnockered at a brewery and pedal back to camp.

Glad I spent 20 minutes watching this. Your commentary is honest and enjoyable to listen to. As someone who grew up somewhere else, I was very happy to discover how bikeable most of Chicagoland is. As someone else mentioned we have plenty of hilly singletrack outside the city. No mountains but enough to get your heart rate up. Chicago in the spring, summer and fall might be the best city of them all. Winter, oooof no... But if the singletrack is frozen solid, it's bearable.
