I get a kick out of the old salts talking smack about the waves. I grew up on the west coast of Vancouver island and spent lots of time in the open North Pacific. I’ve also been on the Great Lakes. You may scoff at the height, but it’s the frequency of the waves that get you. No troughs to maneuver in. If one kicks your keel sideways, you don’t have time to recover. An outboard helps, but the boats you old salts sail , you would be concerned.

I’m far from a boating expert as I just bought my first boat(hunter27) on erie last year. I wanted to anchor out a lot(I did- 20 nights!) so I went overkill with a 33lb spade anchor and 100’ of 3/8” chain. I felt and was VERY secure at anchor, even in heavier weather(20kn). I found my boat had a very similar yawing effect where it swings at anchor. It gets annoying fast when you JUST want the boat pointing into the wind and waves. How hard can it be? The yawing happens when there is an imbalance between the boats center of momentum? And the wind. I spent a couple hours researching one evening and the yawing effect can be pretty dangerous. The small constant movements can cause liquefaction of the sand or clay the anchor is dug into causing it to suddenly slip and drag free. Totally understandable. I felt pretty confident with my oversized, great resetting anchor and 75lb of chain so not a massive worry but i’d rather the boat not yaw. I set up a bridle from port and starboard cleats to hook the chain and that helped a little. Next year I will be trying out a riding sail- a small tablecloth sized sail to help the boat point into the wind better. You may want to look into the yawing yourself. Like I said, i’m still learning.

I have a 42' Carver aft cabin out of South Haven MI and with the twin Cummins I can get 3.25 MPG at 8.5-9MPH so if not hurring it can be fairly efficient for a boat. ERnjoyed your series you picked a very cool route and as many have said more camera work will make it far more interesting for a wider audience.

It is a good boat. I think Ranger tugs can have some quality issues coming out of the factory, they seem to build them as fast as they can. the warranty department is good though and they didn't fight me on anything and my local dealer was able to help me on anything I couldn't fix myself. it took me about 2 years to work out all the bugs. the overall hull and Yamaha performed flawlessly though.

I should make a video at some point in the future going over everything lol. after 2 years I must have found all the weak links and things went smoothly. Looks like 2-4'. It's important to remember that 1 in 1000 waves will be 1.5 times the forecasted wave heights. In this case, 6'. The forecast only states a sample of the highest 1/3 of the waves.

As a sailor, I thought this would be interesting. Why are you not taking waves at a 45 degree angle? I realize it isn't direct, but by "tacking" you are working with wind and waves. 12 volt fans are normal. AC only works at the dock. Why do 60 miles alone?

Good to have a laminated coast guard placard (Notebook?). Squeaks? Cannot tolerate them. I once had a civilian Hummer H1 and the supposed invincibility of the de facto military vehicle was abysmal. Yes, I know it is not a boat. However, being hyper-analytical (?) I would have my son drive around and actively seek out bumps so the squeaks would be more prominent. I would be lying upside down in the back armed (eared) with a stethoscope. Yep, I found and remedied them. I am surprised at a fine boat of that stature would have all that obnoxious “noise.” Oh, once slipped off my boat while trying to grab a wall-secured rope. I fell in between the boat the wall and we were at the front (exit) to lake spot which is turbulent. My 2 passengers were essentially inept, like me falling in, so I was on my own. I was lucky to find a rope while submerged as the boat had moved against the wall. Somehow I was able to push the away enough to surface. Luckily as a wee lad I was a lifeguard. I was able to climb out with a shattered ego, various cuts and bruises and the loss of: my phone, one boat shoe, and a stupid looking captain’s hat (Skipper on Gilligan’s Island). Rest of night: a bit wet but uneventful. Passengers remained inept. Note: They had not noticed I had fallen off the boat.

I don’t care for waves between, say north of 2’ to even 3’ depending on the period….as you mentioned, it’s just not much fun. From time to time I think it is instructive to navigate the unpleasant water and can build some skill and tolerance. In our 170 Montauk, more than 3’ is just flat out disconcerting and we don’t do it. Yes, absolutely addicted to wind, wave and weather forecasts….

This brought back fond memories for me, I boated out of St. Joe and Saugatuck for 7 years in the late 70's and early 80's first in a 30' chriscraft and then in a 36' trojen. Seen many days of 5' - 6' footers and never minded it while out on the lake...BUT the scarry part was coming back into port!!! With the wind coming up from the south it didn't have far for the wind and waves to build BIG waves for you; its when it comes down from the NORTH 100 more miles that things get really hairy/scary!!! I wish your camera would have lasted and shown your entrance "DANCE" coming into the jettys' at the port. Now THAT would have been interesting to see. I then moved to Charleston, SC and bought a 45' Chris and NEVER was scared of wind or waves, they are longer on the ocean. Down there I had a NEW skill to learn and that was strong TIDES that this inland boater had never experienced before!!!!! We all learn. Good video, though.

When I was younger, we left Tobemorey and our destination was Sarnia. The forecast was for 2 to 3 foot waves. One hour into the trip we saw 3 to 5 foot waves. Approximately two hours into the trip, the NWS called for a gale warning. My father sought to find another destination and by the time we reached Kincardin, we saw 8 to 10 foot waves on Lake Huron. We were in a 35 foot Chris Craft and I have never been so scared like I was on that day. My father contacted the Coast Guard and they said to him that they wanted us to check in every 15 minutes and provide our position. In those days we used a loran. The bottom line is that great lakes are some of the most scariest conditions any power boater can experience. I apologize if I spelled these wrong but it has been over 40 years since that day.
